Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

NOW Hayward & Scott said they use a 1" pipe to do the mod on the 3.4 AND the 3.6, upon reading up on this i thought that the 3.6 used a 2" to 2.1/4" pipe.
Leading evidence: 'Use 2"' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run on shell v-power' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Strictly speaking, the corner nipple mod (to clone PSE2 used on 996.2 onwards) requires a 2.25" pipe.

Oettle, H&S et al use a 1" bridge bypass (to clone the PSE1 design used on the 996.1).

Suggestion
One thing that I would swear also makes it sound better is running on Shell V-power.

Suggestion
Although the 996.1 and 996.2 mufflers are externally identical, the 996.1 internals will not respond to a PSE2 bypass, so perhaps only using the PSE1 mod also avoids making that mistake.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
My car is a 2002, get this... It had PSE fitted, but the previous owner had it removed when he had the cup exhaust amd manifolds fitted. He didn't like the sound, he loved power but not that noise...
Me, i like noise. NOW Hayward & Scott said they use a 1" pipe to do the mod on the 3.4 AND the 3.6, upon reading up on this i thought that the 3.6 used a 2" to 2.1/4" pipe.
I know the size will affect the noise, but it is something i have to get right. Don't want it tinny, nor do i want it abnomally loud, but it has to sound like a real sports car. Any advise or comments etc welcome.
Want to do this on wednesday, my indie can do the mod but has never done one before, what do you guys think? H&S do this all day long.
So
1. What size pipe should be used on the 3.6
2. Should i get my great indie to do it, although he has never done it before? Only difference is he is 5 mins away as opposed to 1hr, i don't mind driving t 1hr.
Thanks
Vinny
Strictly speaking, the corner nipple mod (to clone PSE2 used on 996.2 onwards) requires a 2.25" pipe.
This is rarely done (it is a pain and costs more in time and materials).
Oettle, H&S et al use a 1" bridge bypass (to clone the PSE1 design used on the 996.1).
Although the 996.1 and 996.2 mufflers are externally identical, the 996.1 internals will not respond to a PSE2 bypass, so perhaps only using the PSE1 mod also avoids making that mistake.
On a 996.2 muffler, using a PSE1 or PSE2 mod will produce almost identical overall sound level (loudness) and this is why it is used to mod all 996 and 997 mufflers.
It is true a full 2.25" corner nipple mod will possibly offer lower overtones (due to larger diameter), but the sound level is almost identical due to the 1" bridge bypass being full stage (1 to 3) and the 2.25" corner nipple being only a stage 3 bypass.

Do a search for "Oettle" or "Haywood and Scott"
Your indie *should* be able to do it, show them the above pic.
They just need two 1" holes in entry/exit pipes and TIG weld 10cm-ish of T304 straight stainless steel 1" pipe.
Hi,
GT4, that is so informative, thankyou for taking the time to reply with the pictures. I think i will just go to H&S, they have done it over and over and also i can listen to taht sound on the way back.
Appreciated.
Vinny
Hi,
Went to H&S today and had the Oettle mod done. Not bad, fairly happy, just as quiet below 3000rpm and comes alive under load, only problem is, and this sounds silly, but by the time i am over 3000rpm, i am looking at getting points on my licence.
The boys were nice, seemed a little down, but guess they do this day in and day out, they said they had another 996 to do on saturday. They also said that my one sounded different. Again GT4, thanks for your input.
Overall though, happy.
Vinny
H&S did mine earlier in the year and similarly on small throttle openings it isn't hugely different, but does come alive going up the revs.
I think often the problem is that you never actually hear it from behind, I got someone else to drive mine while i followed and when they mashed the throttle it sounded like a racing car
One thing that I would swear also makes it sound better is running on Shell V-power. Even my wife thinks running on the stuff makes mine and her Cayenne Turbo sound slightly throatier. Maybe this is our imagination but I am sticking to the expensive juice.
+1
You need:
The windows down
The sunroof open
The cab roof down
A tunnel
Or get someone to drive past you. I stood awestruck as the OPC techie drove my car from the car park round to the service bays the first time I dropped it off for service after my H&S mod.
Personally, I like the sub 3k rpm/partial throttle quietness. More of an event when you go from stealth mode to full on battle-cry at 3k+ rpm and WOT.
Plus it is handy for sneaking home late.
Hi guys,
You are all correct there. Getting home late is a hobby of mine and my previous 911 sounded like Lucifer himself had come home and was in a bad mood!! This way is stealth, quite good actually.
So my friend called me this morning and he was driving part od the way home then branched off, as we branched off, i decided to take off past him, and he called to say "What the xxxx? Very nice!" So i guess it does sound good.
Console and seat backs to be painted next...
Regards
Vinny
