Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys
had some bad luck today, driving down the A3 a lorry chucked up a small stone which has cracked my windscreen, i now have a 4 inch crack from the top edge of the screen above the centre light console which is slowly (100miles later) creeping down.
anybody know the cost to replace the screen glass and who to best use in London?
also about a week ago the brake pad warning light came on, i have done about 200 miles since and i seem to have about 4-5mm of friction pad left on the front pads
how long have i got with normal driving before metal touches metal?
and i think the discs might need changing at the same time, is it worth paying for porsche original discs or do most of you go the pattern part route?
looks like its going to be an expensive month!
thanks in advance for the replys
Tim
Most fully comp
insurance
will cover a new screen for an excess of £80 approx, I know mine did from privilege. Get your discs from design911, about the best price if you do their disc and pad package, and don't pay Porsche prices when oem discs will do the same job. Front discs are L/R sided so if you do it yourself, make sure u get the right disc on the correct side! Easy diy.
Mine was £50 from my
insurance
(I think all have windscreen cover) It was done via the insurance company next day by Autowindsreens (the insurance cos supplier) who did a first rate job at my house. No leaks sqeeks, wind noise or groans,
I just bought the OE front & rear disc/ pad set from Design911, it includes everything you need. A pretty reasonable £452 all in with the 5% discount for 911uk
widscreen cover
hi guys
thanks for the heads up on the windscreen hand not thought to check my
insurance
i am covered and have a £60 excess so thats a real bonus
have never made a claim in 20 years and never read the small print so didnt think to look
but it seems to be a separate policy added into the main car insurance so i am assuming it doesnt affect me no claims bonus
cheers
tim
No, claiming for a windscreen should not affect your insurance policy / premium at all (i.e. you won't lose no-claims bonuses or have your premium hiked at your next renewal. Well, not any more than normal!!).
I have claimed for many windscreens over the years, with a variety of different insurance companies, and it has never affected my no-claims allowance...
+1 to windscreen cover (and the no effect on NCD).
All fully comp policies have it and some third party by option.
Don't forget you get free chip repair as well.
ALL glass is covered (ie all windows and often sunroof, if glass).
Unfortunately someone broke into my daily driver, but the side glass was covered by the windscreen policy. Which was good as only the dealer could supply at the time (new model and factory privacy tint). And was rather expensive.
I think the insurance co's prefer to keep that one quiet for obvious reasons.
Essential for the 924/944/968 owner I would have thought, where the rear screen is nearly £4000 now. In a lot of cases it may write the car off. I wonder if the NCB would be affected then?
A word of warning on screens - Autoglass (and all the other chains I suspect) will want to fit a pattern screen. My advice is to insist on a genuine Porsche screen ordered on the VIN from an OPC. They
can
do this but won't unless asked to. Sometimes they need authorisation from the ins co. but I've had 3 screens from different insurers over the years & have never been refused a genuine screen. The pattern screen is of inferior quality & often doesn't quite fit properly, leading to bodges to ensure it doesn't make a noise or leak.
Oh, it's also a useful way of getting a top-tint if you want one but don't currently have one 8)
hi nx120
thanks for that will give my insurance a call tommorow and when i speak to thier supplier i wil do as you say and insist on a genuine screen
already have top tint so would want like for like anyway
cheers
+1 for using OEM discs, I just had the set of 4 put on mine, with pads and handbrake shoes parts were £550 ex VAT, ex fitting, from my indie. And he (not unreasonably) put a modest margin on those compared to the kit price from design911.
thanks for all the advice guys
car now booked in for oem front pads and discs if needed at JAZ in wembley
and auto glass fit the screen next week
they tell me the screens all made by pilkington and pattern is just without label saying porsche part no.
to be honest the current screen i believe is a replacement anyway as had to replace and refit the seals early on in my ownership due to wind noise
so i am not too bothered for £60 excess that the screen is a pattern part and is guaranteed to be leakproof
knowing my luck i will pick up another stone chip quite soon anyway
driving in london seems to be moe intense on a car than the surrey/sussex roads where i used to live
cheers
