Handy for posing at low speed, but not much use (comared to the fuse box button) otherwise.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, Just a small observation that seems to confuse me. On the facelift cars, the rear spoiler button is in the footwell, was wondering why it would be placed their??? Been pondering it on drives for a while, seems a strange place for it. Any ideas?? Vinny

POST 2Original post

Probably as it isn't meant to be driver deployed. By that I mean, Porsche has determined the speed at which the vehicle's need for extra down force exceeds the drag caused by it. At high speed it deploys to keep you on the road (and direct more air into the engine). In fact to force a retraction at speed will make the vehicle unstable and trigger a warning. At low speed it retracts to minimise the drag and hence enhance fuel economy. The manual ovreride is meant purely for maintenance and washing purposes (both at standstill).

POST 3Original post

...and to stop the filth knowing you're doing more than 75??

POST 4Original post

Well there is that "use" (although not formally acknowledged by Porsche). However, if you do a forced deploy (prior to software deploy at 120 kph / 75 mph), the unit will stay in manual mode and won't retract below 60 kph / 37 mph. You will have to manually retract too. The system will reset (to auto monitoring) on turning on and off ignition.

POST 5Original post

Thanks again GT4 ...... It's not natural that one person knows so much....? :floor:

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, I guess it makes sense in a strange kind of way. It is in a out of the way place for a reason i guess. It's the kid in me wanting to push buttons i think.... Vinny

POST 7Original post

I wonder why they put the spoiler button on the dash on the Turbo? Handy for posing at low speed, but not much use (comared to the fuse box button) otherwise.

POST 8Original post

Don't tell anyone, but the Turbo doesn't actually need to deploy the spoiler at speed. Even without deployment it is a mini-"ducktail" and provides enough "safety" downforce. So, as if you didn't already know, the Turbo is a poseurs car.

POST 9Original post

Damn - I've been rumbled. I had better not pass comment about the ground effect, although I do like the phrase "beautifully sculpted wake" - but that's the poser in me again.

POST 10Original post

I hate to break the spell of the marketeer's wand, but all 996 have polypropylene underbody panels, except under the engine area, which ironically the 993 had. Probably why none of them leak (on the floor). They just drive round with a small pond of oil swishing around in the under pan, strapped below the engine.

POST 11Original post

The not inconsiderable retracted Turbo spoiler:

POST 13Original post

And then of course they put the switch back on the dash of the 997.....Didn't they do this with the 993 and 964 also? ~ Maxie

POST 14Original post

It is still only intended to be manually adjusted at standstill. Anything else goes against Porsche's ethos of function over form.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, Glad it wasn't just me that found this a little strange. Richard H.. Where did you get the stereo surround from, haven't sen them for a while, and would prefer that one to the plain ones. Thanks Vinny
