I am planing my 50k maintenance this fall and would like preventive maintenance suggestions for a "perfect" running BS. Aside from normal oil/filters, air filters, inspections, I am thinking about following:
- AOS replacement
- I think there are also a couple of hoses that are suggested here as originals harden and split?
- OEM water pump and belt
- If pump changed, good idea to replace all coolant also (50k but 11 years old)
- Possibly new battery (current Interstate is 6 years old and symptom free)
- Other??
In general, everything is up to date now: plugs, brake fluid, drive belt at 28k (2016). Trans/diff fluids at 28k also
Thanks
belt would be suggested , the others - Id leave be unless you are seeing or hearing symptoms of demise - just my 2cents
If you do change the water pump change 100% of the coolant too, the battery is on OT for sure.
Mine is a 2008
987.1
but having just turned 100K kms I preemptively did the AOS, water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt and coolant. As for the battery, it gets preemptively replaced every 6 years. Brake fluid every 2 years.
The AOS hoses were not brittle and so they didn't get replaced.
Next
year at 120K km will be the second change of spark plugs and the second change of transmission fluid.
The AOS on the
987.2
(2009 up) is apparently not as prone to failure as the earlier one, and it's much easier to change (it basically plugs into the block) - that said - I did mine at 60,000 miles since the past-owner had bought a new one from
Porsche
and gave it to me with the car.
Ditto on the water pump. Not a huge issue on the .2 car engines. I did replace mine with aftermarket (Glebe IIRC), but the one that came off looked perfect. I did both idlers and the belt. And coolant (get a vacuum lift to refill it) and all the filters (cabin, engine air, oil filter). No hoses were replaced - they all looked perfect, but there are a few of the quick disconnect hoses that have to be disconnected to replace the water pump. On these hoses I'd suggest replacing the O-ring that seals the hose to the fitting on the engine. It's a few $$ from
Porsche
, and can very easily be replaced while it's disassembled. Use some silicone grease on it when reinstalling it.
Dunno what the change interval is on the manual transmission fluid - but it's not an expensive job to replace it (I believe it's just
GL5
oil) and the same oil lubricates the differential so it will make you feel better if you replace it.
You might also consider R&R of the front bumper to clean out the debris clogging the HVAC condenser and the cooling system radiator. No matter how well you do it with the bumper on (and a long crevis-tool on the shop-vac), actually pulling the AC condenser forward will reveal LOTS of crud stuck between the condenser and radiator. Might be a good time to consider adding mesh to the inside of the grille openings to prevent the worst of this stuff from plugging it up in the future and protecting the condenser against a stone puncture (more common than you might think.)
That should do you for 50,000 miles - although the way Germans schedule services - this is actually the 60,000 mile service.
