FYI, I just noticed that your mechanic only filled your brake fluid up to 3/10ths.

The antennae for the GPS and for Sirius satellite radio were installed on the front bumper, underneath the bumper cover.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm generally not a fan of aftermarket stereos in Porsches. They often look a bit out of place, or look cheesy. What I realized though, is that at nearly 10 years old, the C4S was badly out of date when it comes to electronic technology. This isn't a show car... it isn't a collector car... it's a daily driver. I decided to take the plunge and upgrade the electronics.
I had a Kenwood DNX-6960 head unit installed, and I upgraded the speakers and amp with products from Focal. I chose the Kenwood unit because it has Garmin navigation with real time traffic updates through NavTeq. It also offers bluetooth integration with my phone, iPod connectivity and Sirius satellite radio. It has voice dialing and phonebook control for the phone connection, but not for the control of the navigation system. I didn't opt for the back up camera - I don't really see the need for that. Kenwood's top of the line unit is the DNX-9960. I considered it, but I didn't like it because it has buttons instead of a **** for volume control, and it has a motorized face - which I don't like.
I found an excellent installer in the Denver area who specializes in high-end cars. They strive to make the installation look like a factory system as best they can. I'm pleased with the outcome. The antennae for the GPS and for Sirius satellite radio were installed on the front bumper, underneath the bumper cover. They are totally concealed. The new amp was installed in the frunk where the CD changer was. The Bose sub-woofers were removed, and the new unit put into the factory location. New OEM carpeting was used in the back after the new sub went in. The new sub is a single 10", as opposed to the two 6" units in the Bose box. The microphone for the telephone was installed in the factory location.
One of my favorite parts is the custom iPod/iPhone dock that was built for this installation. You'll see the slot for it in the dash, under the head unit. I took one photo of it with the iPod in, and one with the iPod out. The iPhone locks into the slot, almost totally flush with the dash. It connects the iPhone to the head unit. The lined it with felt, so it won't scratch the phone. It's spring loaded, so it pops out when you push it.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the sound, the electronics and the installation. The C4S feels like a new car again!
Unfortunately, it wasn't cheap. The head unit that I chose can be purchased on
www.crutchfield.com
for $799.99. Speakers and amps are available in a HUGE range of prices - it all depends on what you're looking for. The installation labor was about $600 in my case, but I believe it was well worth it.
I've heard of it being done - I think that the head unit and amps need to be replaced, but the Bose system can stay in place. I'm not entirely sure about that, but I think it's right.
My car is a 2002, so I didn't have the MOST system to worry about. Even so, I decided to replace the Bose speakers. I figured that if I'm going to to an upgrade, I might as well do it right.
I'm just cheap. I like the system just fine except the damn CD changer doesn't want to work right and the in-dash CD won't eject properly. It's not like I ever take the nav CD out but it still bothers the crap out of me. I would also love ipod hookup but it's all so dang expensive. I gotta save money for all the tires I burn up autocrossing!
If you are replacing the headunit in MOST system, the amp and headunit need to be replaced. That's the fiber connection. After the amp, it's standard. I just replaced mine as well - both headunit and amp. The Bose speakers, though not audiophile quality, actually put out decent sound once you upgrade the other components.
I actually wasn't all that unhappy with the sound quality of the OEM Bose system. I just wanted better iPod connectivity, I really wanted a bluetooth phone connection and now that we live in the mountains, Sirius is a "must have" feature. The new system does sound significantly better than the OEM system, but there's so much noise in a 911 that you can't enjoy it the way you can in a quiet car. It was really the combination of features that did it for me.
Thanks Fergus. They fabricated the surround, as well as the boxes for all the speakers and the mount for the amp. They recovered the luggage area inside the frunk as well.
Very cool install!...The iphone dock is exactly what ive beem looking for...i suppose they fabricated the iphone dock as well? Is it charging in the dock?
Yes, the iPod dock was custom fabricated. It connects the iPod to the head unit and charges it as well. This particular head unit duplicates the iPod controls on the screen, so there's no need to use the iPod itself to control music or phone.
I've failed to find a complete set of reference material for those of us troubleshooting 996 radios, or just looking to upgrade selected parts of the stereo setup.
Anyone recall a previous post that fits the bill or of a site with a reasonable overview?
My car's previous owner installed a nice Alpine head unit when the OEM unit died. The hacks that installed it didn't do a good job and (or for additional reasons) the sound is about the worst thing I've ever heard.
I don't know anything about this MOST system you all speak of. How do I know if that's what I have? I still have the original amp, but the harness from the head unit was hacked off and the speakers wired directly (and incorrectly as both rear speakers are on the same channel somehow).
Thanks for any insight.
Nice setup Dennis.
2003 and up are the fiber optic "MOST" Systems.
Stinks that they hacked up your car, I installed a double din Pioneer nav unit in my 02 without cutting a single factory wire.
Dennis,
I'm curious as to how the signal quality is on your sirius radio with the antenna under the front bumper cover. I've got an alpine unit in my car and am in the process of adding the sirius radio module and love the idea of having the antenna hidden away. Right now I'm going to try it under the black plastic cover next to the windshield wipers because I'm too laze to undo the bumper cover.
Dennis, very nice install! I love the iphone dock. I will go a similar route when I decide to give up the PCM1.
FYI, I just noticed that your mechanic only filled your brake fluid up to 3/10ths. I usually like to go with 10/10ths! LOL
Dennis- really handsome job on the Kenwood installation! I live in Austin, and with any luck, I will close on a 2002 Carrera 4 Cab in the next few weeks. It is currently in Berkeley CA, and I will have it transported back to Austin.
It currently has the double DIN original Nav / CD / radio combo that is not working, so I am looking to do the same treatment to this car that you had done in 2007- I found your pictures and description on a Google search!
I like the Kenwood look, and the fact that you have AM / FM / Nav / Bluetooth / Sirius baked in is attractive. How has your experience been with the Kenwood, and would you suggest another head unit?
I have read that you need to replace the amp at the same time you replace the head unit. Any input on that?
Any tips on:
* Should I make it part of the deal and get the seller to do it at a place called Hi Tech Audio in El Cerrito. Not sure I am comfortable with this, but i could make it part of the deal. Trade-off, I suppose.
* Do you have any suggested shops here in Austin that I might approach for this work?
Thanks a million for your input. I printed out and used your history and 2002 features write-ups on my trip to California, so I looked MUCH smarter than I am...
That's a very clean install, and the ipod dock is clever. I've considered an upgrade in my 2000 C2, but don't want to lose the trip computer functionality of my PCM1. If it dies I'll definitely go the same route that you did.
I'm not sure about the trip computer function. My mileage calculation that is displayed in the instrument cluster still works.
I wouldn't make a stereo upgrade part of a new purchase. I'd rather purchase the car first and then work on the stereo separately. This allows you to take some time and get things exactly the way you want them to be.
I've been very happy with the Kenwood unit. There's a newer model available now. The things that I like about the Kenwood unit that I chose are as follows:
- Volume **** instead of buttons
- Processor speed when switching between functions
- Good navigation with traffic updating (Kenwood uses Garmin) and speed limit display
- Ability to match interior lighting
- Sound quality
If you are replacing the stereo on a 2003+ car then you've got to deal with the MOST fiber optic ring. This is used to connect the amps and the CD changer and isn't compatible with aftermarket systems. There is a MOST HUR adapter for some cars - not sure about the 996. On pre-2003 cars, I believe you can utilize existing amps. Your ability to place speakers also depends on whether your car has Bose or not.
I think that the speakers are the weakest link in the system in terms of sound quality.
Your best bet is to replace it all, but that's not a cheap option.
My car has the factory PCM1 navigation system. All of the trip computer functionality is in the PCM1, and not displayed on the cluster. I don't even have the 4th stalk, it's all done in the PCM menus.
It sounds like you'd lose that functionality. Many head units have some trip computer functions, but I'm not sure if they would have exactly what you need. It's worth comparing different systems. The Kenwood unit can provide basic trip and mileage functionality, estimates on economy utilizing gps, and a few more things. You can enter your fuel prices and it will calculate "eco routes" for you as well as monitor your fuel usage.
Exact same radio here, bought for the same reason; wanted a **** as well as touch screen. Also, installed a new amp although I hid the old school ipod within the consol. Like u, i agree this is a bit of a loud car so perfect tunes really aren't possible, but this unit is close. My one complaint is my microphone sux. Have gone thru all the variables in the system and no one can understand me. I'm waiting to upgrade it along with an under the bumper radar/laser & backup camera, all at the same time. U have any audible issues with your mike?
The installer that I used for that installation is no longer in business, unfortunately.
My recommendation is to use the following installer:

They do great work also and pay great attention to detail. They installed the Mobridge M2 Pro in my 997 TT.
Does the radio still operate like the factory whereas when you turn the key off it keeps playing and when you remove the key it plays until you open the door?
Excellent job Dennis. Did the same thing this week. Installed the 7 inch Pioneer AVH-
4100NeX with Apple Play, an amp, XM, and related cables and mod kit to relocate the Ac controls. Has a touch screen and has awesome graphics. Parts came to 1150.00, 280.00 for install here in Marietta at Sound Sensations. Still have to replace all speakers and am doing comparisons for now. In the meantime, I can enjoy the sound and features.
