Suggestion

Reason being that on my Cayman R I didn't have it and when its raining its a complete pain (modern day problem I know) to keep wiping the screen or adjusting from on to off all the time with different intensities of rain fall.

Problem is most people would have spec'd the PCM for more or less the same reasons so we all get trapped in this way of thinking.

I'm going over my spec again and have made some changes, included the leather interior with alcantara, ditched the alcantara sun visors and light design package, the only thing I'm umming and arring over is the DAB radio; to make way for the ore expensive interior I could do with ditching this, what are your views on this as an option is it a must have or can I ditch it?

Porsche Communication Management (PCM) including navigation module with universal audio interface Sound Package Plus Mobile phone preparation Digital radio? Spec is a very personal thing, so what anybody else thinks isn't really going to help you and you will no doubt get 101 different answers. My personal thoughts on your spec are that its very nice but I would ditch sport-chrono as it adds nothing - its just a very expensive clock. I also havn't spec'd the Dual Air Con as I just don't see the point in the UK and even the argument for climate over std a/c adds no weight with me as Ive never had a problem without it in the past. DAB again offers nothing to me, but I never listen to the radio - always choose my own music from a mem stick. Then again I've gone for a quite few more nice to carbon/leather trim bits that most people will feel are a complete waste of money too - so there you have it, I've proven my own point. Oh here's one that's a bit of a no-brainer though - add in the "online services" as its now a no cost option!

POST 3Original post

For a start, I didn't even realise that DAB wasn't included with the PCM pack; quite crazy just how much it costs to have sat nav and DAB in a Porsche when it is generally included in any other car. Add both and you are talking the best part of £3k. Question whether this is good value for money? Interior leather with silver is a good choice imo for the blue car, but I'd ditch Chrono, it hasn't the same appeal as it once did and is an expensive option just for a nice looking clock! Personally would go back wheels with the blue paint, but personal preference. Everything else is similar to mine, also opted for two-zone climate just for the sake of not having to adjust it all the time. My build is presently £73.5k but I'm still considering removing a few options because they just aren't worth it, even if they are more desirable for the next fella!

POST 4Original post

personally i think you've got it right on the nail. Of all the new cars I've got one of the things i love most is the DAB radio , the reception and just being able to leave on one station as you travel far and wide. Personally id leave this alone!

POST 5Original post

Internally, I would bin the sport chrono, as not much use bin DAB as I've never needed before def keep two zone a/c as can set temperature would do something to avoid having aluminium trim, as the brushed trim on doors and dash does not match the polished trim on the vents. I went carbon to doors and dash and leather to centre console Do the above, and will be identical to mine in the cabin, and think is a great place to sit and drive

POST 6Original post

OP, your spec is quite similar to mine. I don't have the Sport Chrono for the reasons others have said, but I do have the 2 zone and the DAB. I'd do the same again.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all, Wow it does seem the the sports Chrono is an option not being ticked by many! I initially left it out but the dealer made a big point of telling me not to as its desired on any GT car even though as you say it's an expensive clock! He said it would hurt the cars price if I chose to sell it in the future, I also do like the look of the clock! Debated the carbon interior but it's a rather pricey and I've got to draw the line somewhere otherwise PCCB's and yellow stitching would be next and closely followed by a divorce.....

That was my thought also, it's one one the best things in my daily driver! But that came free of charge.... It does feel a bit excessive to pay 3k for satnav and a radio when in most other cars it's free but hey hoy we are where we are and I'm just grateful to have a build slot!

I don't think Chrono on a GT4 is on many enthusiasts' checklists once they realise that it doesn't actually change the car's dynamic behaviour in any way. I agree, though, that the extra displays available in the right hand dial screen in Chrono-equipped GT4s would be nice to have. But I'm not paying £1000-ish for them, as I suspect they're mostly there for willy-waving purposes and you'd stop looking at them after a while. If you're really keen on track telemetry analysis and can attend trackdays where it's possible to use the lap trigger beacon thingy without getting sent home, then fair enough. But that won't be high on many people's priorities I suspect.

Chrono - doesn't do anything performance wise on the GT4 . It's not like the R where it at least sharpened the throttle response Exhaust - isn't an option on the GT4 like it was on the R Nav - Personnally don't think it's important on a GT / R cars . Sold all my clubsport non Nav GT3's for good money and both my manual / bucket R,s didn't have Nav and sold straight away . But I know people have strong opinions both ways on this , I'm just speaking from my experience on my 5 GT / R,s over the last 4 years Seats - Agree I'd say the basic leather / alcantara will be an essential option on GT4 going forward . Transforms the interior for comparatively little cash . Lack of Mobile phone prep although not a deal breaker would also put me off . But as said earlier it's all just opinion......

POST 17Original post

Depends how long you are going to keep it? I think in 5 years + it may not be possible to receive analogue signals, so to compete with dab cars when you come to sell it you would have to retrofit a dab radio. But then again it's 3k and you have a gt4 - if it wasn't for needing 4 seats and the only way I could get into one was with no options, I would happily take no options. Sorry I have not helped your decision.

POST 18Original post

I would also think about seat heating if available with full buckets, floor mats and passenger footwell storage net.

However mines going to be a jack of all trades for me as I don't have the luxury of keeping it for a track only toy and at least staying cool in the summer and listening to some music was a necessity for me. I hope you do go for that spec though as it will be the hardest of hardcore GT4's.

Ok, I have finalised my spec with the OPC, its touch and go whether they can get it approved for me though as my build is in Feb! Surely basic floor mats are included free of charge??????

POST 25Original post

Yup, "810 - Floor Mats" are a std part of the UK spec and don't have to be ordered seperatly. You can optionally upgrade them at build to "CFX - Personalised floor mats with leather edging" for £215.

I always preferred the look of no CDR/PCM because it inevitably gets dated. In fact, it's the only thing that looks dated in a 996/997.

Unless your order is getting the new Carplay Satnav I would not bother, the CDR+/DAB/SPP pack is much better value (Assuming it exists as an option on the GT4). I'm no sure how bad it would be for residuals, anyone buying a new car in 2015/2016 who tries the PCM currently in the Cayman after seeing other modern sat navs will tell you it is poor. Sport Chrono is a personal thing although I subscribe to the "Expensive Dash Wart" view. Edited by Krobar on Wednesday 30th December 18:09

PCM may have value to some now - dependant upon how you've specified your car. However, if you've specified it with the idea that it'll make selling easier "years down the line" then the reverse may well be true. Technology (when it's old technology), dates a car. Mine is a CS car, to be used on sunny weekends and the odd track day. It'll never be a daily driver and I definitely don't want PCM. My use is probably common. If on the very odd occasion I require nav then I'll use my phone or Garmin.

However the reason I kept it in is down to if I need to sell the car earlier than I had planned and I'm concours of non PCM vehicles hanging around. The Boxster Spyder at Romans is a car in point! It's a great car and nicely spec'd the owner didn't go PCM but obviously had to sell earlier than they wanted but it's not moving and Romans are lowering the price weekly (I haven't checked recently if it's now sold)! So although if I was 100% sure I would be keeping the GT4 for the next 4/5 years plus I wouldn't have spec'd it but currently my situation means I may have to release the money in the GT4 earlier than that (worst case scenario)! And the PCM just means it's not going to slow that process up or artificially de-value the resale price if I have to! Problem is most people would have spec'd the PCM for more or less the same reasons so we all get trapped in this way of thinking. I wish I could have been braver but I couldn't take the risk!

Good spec and almost exactly the same as mine but without club sport. You could argue that you should go the whole hog and add it? Ads a little more occasion and purpose to the car plus resale? Just a thought?

I did think about it but mine's a weekend car and will rarely see a race track, mainly north Wales and Scotland as well as the Cotswold country lanes where I live! I also plan to take it into Europe and felt I needed the extra space behind the seats for bags etc when on longer trips and thought the CS would rob that from me! If I was buying for a track tool I would have binned off PCM and all niceties such as DAB, dual climate and spec'd it with PCCB and CS probably come out similar price but would have been focused for the cars predicted use! If money wasn't a consideration I would have added PCCB and contrast stitching as they look superb, I get brake envy any time a car is posted on here with them but I had to draw the line somewhere! Maybe Tom would sell me his brakes from the one that's just had a wee accident?

I actually quite like the PCM3 - have it in the Cayenne (Daily Drive) and use it regularly. However, because the GT4 isn't my DD I will hardly use it (if at all), but I bought it as more of an 'insurance' for resale. I know that in the short-term (5yrs) I will recoup more than the cost of PCM.

I'm originally from Snowdonia so know the north wales roads very well. I too plan on going to Europe. Would be good to get a few owners together at some point.

A couple of points for those yet to lock spec. The 'manuel' aircon is fine. Whilst not used in sub zero temps (yet) it is very efficient in this damp and rainy weather and keeps all windows clear merely on the lowest setting. For those toying with speccing pccb, unless you are a ceramic die hard and or have a fetish for yellow I would suggest they are wasted on this car....the standard GT3 steels are fantastic furthermore they produce far less brake dust than the heavier GT3 for those concerned about darkening wheels. A final point is that the Dunlops so far feel as good as the Michelins and are arguably superior in the wet.

Porsche need to update this configurator, its a bit bloody useless at giving an idea of interior options colours and materials. On Ian's code above it won't show the carbon interior option which when paying £1000 surely is useful to see what your car will look like without resorting to searching google images.

The standard AC in my 981 Cayman S annoys me every single time I get in it over the winter. When I specced it I didn't realise not ticking dual zone climate would give me no climate control at all. I turn the temp to max as soon as I get in it on a cold morning then as the engine warms up I have to manually turn the temp back down. It's not the end of the World but it is annoying.

If you are considering keeping for a while I would really look at ditching the PCM.... I know we (I) have been through this for ages but the more I think about it the more I think you don't need it and the CDR plus comes with the DAB radio inclusive! The only time it seems to be an issue is if you want/need to sell it quite quickly!

PCM, not a fan of it myself, but always think what car worth £70k doesn't have it. However, having realised the other day that DAB isn't included for that price, it becomes a £3k option versus CDR+ at £1k. £2k saved for a few less potential buyers. I'll decide at the time.

I'm going for this option. Reason being that on my Cayman R I didn't have it and when its raining its a complete pain (modern day problem I know) to keep wiping the screen or adjusting from on to off all the time with different intensities of rain fall. I'm not speccing this option for the auto mirror, more for the auto wipers. I have them on my Cayenne and when raining its nice to concentrate on driving and not on how much you can see through the windscreen. To me it really does make a big difference.
