Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked for pictures on Suncoast and some of the other parts sites but the ones I found were all different.
Leading evidence: 'Check pictures' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check here' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

looking at 2001 carrera on line and seller thinks but not sure if it is an awd.
is there a way to tell by the vin or any other way without looking at the car in person.
Badges and fenders and differentials and paperwork can be fake. The only real way to tell is to give a lot of power exiting a fast corner in a poor grip situation, and see how well she pulls
If the current owner doesn't know if his/her car is a c4 or c2 I wouldn't even consider buying from that person. Shows how much he/she cared for the car. That said if you can get the vin and call your local dealer they will tell you
Ask for a pic of the front underside of the car. If you see a differential with axles to the tires, it is awd.
If you want to know if it was originally this way, get a Certificate Of Authenticity (COA) from Porsche and they will confirm exactly what car should be related to the VIN.
Odds are NOBODY will convert to a awd version from a 2wd.
that person may have had the car regularly and perfectly serviced the car at the dealer, drove gently and spent a lot of time living life away from cars.
judge the car on its merits without prejudices against the owner.
+ a lot

yeah.... sorry to be a jerk, but this is a a stupid question. i could understand if you didn't have a computer (or a phone) but this is NOT a question you should be asking if you are about to spend (at least) 20 grand. if you have a problem with my comment...... go to hell. yeah i just said that. ban me.
Doesn't the 13th digit of the VIN describe the body/drivetrain type? Check here:

edit: maybe not. Here's an image of a C4 (AWD) front trunk:
The RWD C2 front trunk looks like this:
Well that's first......a "user" with 9 posts tells me to Fvck off? What are you 12? And no its not a dumb question. You don't know who the OP is. He is asking a legit question. Keep up the smart *** comments and you will be the one who gets the boot.
If you're asking because you want an AWD Porsche then you should look to the later 997 models. The 996 does not have a truly functional AWD system in comparison.
Not in my C4S. It just says Carrera.
As suggested, without getting underneath the car, the easiest way to tell is to pop the hood to look at the frunk. The pictures already posted are very helpful.

Get the car in the air and look for the cardan shaft from the tranny to the front diff, look then for the diff, and from each side of the diff an axle to the front hub/wheel.
I believe that RWD models have a compact spare tire in the frunk. AWD models have a collapsible spare tire with a compressor underneath the floor in the frunk.

I have no disrespect against anyone period..... unless they start stepping on my toes. You don't have to be a gear head or a car junkie to not know what you're driving. You can tell a lot about the car by meeting the owner and vice versa. Just my opinion.....
I'm sure there was an option to upgrade the standard sills. My sills are metal and the word Carrera almost looks brushed within it. They look OE but maybe they were aftermarket or optional?
Is this what yours look like?
I tried to find a picture of what mine look like but came up empty. I checked for pictures on Suncoast and some of the other parts sites but the ones I found were all different. I'll try to take a picture later.

+1 on open trunk and look. Dead give away. Look underneath to make sure drivetrain is still intact. and,,,A C4S will have the sill that says Carrera 4S unless they were changed. C4 will say Carrera 4.
Sneaky P, dont waste your brain cells trying to make sense of those posts. I doubt hes even real, much less a Porsche owner.
You just couldnt leave us C4S owners out of this and then you deliver a low blow to us?
(just kidding)
