I thought at first it was the fan in the dash but now i'm not so sure it is getting louder an I wander if its comming from the engine bay.

Suggestion
Start the car and listen for the whine - shut off the aircon with the fan running (the button with the snowflake on the bottom left) this takes out the clutch between the engine and aircon compressor adn stops the compressor irrespective of the temperature setting.
Leading evidence: 'fan in the dash' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fan in the dash' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run (the button' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Unless you turn off the snowflake (a/c) it will still run, dehumidifying the air, even when the heater is on.

Suggestion
That would be of a high pitched hum/whine if the compressor's running dry.

Mine did this when I first bought it, then went as I put more miles on the car (mines an every day use 996 C2).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Fella's, Just got my first 996 C4. 2001 with 39,000 miles.
The problem I have is if I put the fan on for the Aircon or Heat there is a whining/skwarking sound. If I turn it off completely the sound goes. I thought at first it was the fan in the dash but now i'm not so sure it is getting louder an I wander if its comming from the engine bay. It almost sounds like a power steering pump giving up. I thought it maybe the aircon pump but it does it if you change to heat. The car has not been used often as you can see from the mileage so do we think lack of use?
Any help before I head off to the dealer......and get my leg lifted!
Thank you
Mine did this when I first bought it, then went as I put more miles on the car (mines an every day use 996 C2).
It would squeal when I first started the car, but go if I turned the fan right up in manual mode.
Could try WD40 in the fan spindle bearing, but wouldn't know how to get at it, sorry.
EDITTED TO ADD: THESE IMAGES ARE LHD EXAMPLES. RHD IS MIRROR IMAGE.
Could be a leaf etc stuck in the input air vent.
Do you know if the pollen filter is still in place?
Go in the front boot and check, while your in there try and poke the end of a vacuum cleaner pipe down the neck. You could also reach down and spray some WD-40 onto the fan spindle as suggested.
Or, if you are feeling more adventurous (or the debris is stuck in the middle of the "squirrel cage" fan, you will have to access it underneath.
Here is an exploded view (you can see the opening where the pollen filter fits at the very top of the ventilation system)
Here is the entire assembly out of the car:
Pull out the underdash foam cladding (it is held in place by a couple of plastic screws):
Remove the airduct besides the fan (top of this picture with the "accordian" ripple tube). It just pulls off/out of the airways. The lower part in the photo is the lower fan shield:
Reach up and pull off the power plug for the fan:
Now remove the lower fan shield (it is held on by two bolts). Support the weight as the fan assembly sits on this shield.:
Gently lower down and you have the fan assembly. Remove any debris by hand or brush etc. You can spray the bearings if you wish with WD-40.
Fan assembly removed:
Yes, they are all LHD.
Sorry, should have stated on the outset.
The system is mirrored for RHD (I guess I could have flipped them in PShop etc).
I think the give-aways are the wipers (not that anyone was looking there!) or the lack of steering column/pedals in the RH footwell.
Try this for me - only take a second.
Start the car and listen for the whine - shut off the aircon with the fan running (the button with the snowflake on the bottom left) this takes out the clutch between the engine and aircon compressor adn stops the compressor irrespective of the temperature setting. If the whine stops then its your aircon compressor being overworked.
If the whine persists ignore my ramblings and start to rip the front end apart a la the previous posts.
The overworked compressor is probably caused by a leaking aircon condensor (911 consumable) dropping the pressure in your system - ultimately the noise will stop as the compressor will trip out at about 40psi as your leak develops.
The way ahead if this is the case is either keep the aircon turned off or get new aircon condensors (about 400 quid at an indie).
Hope its a leaf and not a 400 quid pair of condensors.
That would be of a high pitched hum/whine if the compressor's running dry.
As you say, hopefully it is not that.
Hey people, you know you can always record the noise and upload a sound file, so we can all diagnose the problem better!
Just re-read your first post, you say it does it on heat therefore it can't be the a/c.
Unless you turn off the snowflake (a/c) it will still run, dehumidifying the air, even when the heater is on.
Is it definitely off or is the a/c still on?
Is the noise definitely coming from the dash/front of car?
PS - the engine's at the back.
Fella's
Thanks everso much for the response, it's nice to know that there are such knowlegable people on this forum willing to help.
I will start to work through all your info at the weekend.
I have to say I thought at first it maybe a dry spindle on the fan but somehow it sounds more like a pump under strain. I have receipt from Porsche Cardiff to say the Aircon was re-gassed a year or so ago and it does blow very chilly. I have not pushed the snowflake button so take on board what you say about the Aircon still been worked. Thanks again everyone. I will keep you posted.
