Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When you look in from the rear of the car there is an oil leak from the left hand side. It is dripping down from the front cover and seems to be auto trans fluid or power steering fluid. It is about 15 inches in from the back of the wheel. Any ideas. I did not get a chance to take the cover down yet

POST 2Original post

could you take a photo to illustrate the site of the leak as it could be a number of things there.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I took the cover down the other night and although there was oil on the cover i could not see a leak from the gearbox. There is a small plastic union on the left hand side of the gearbox that was resting on the cover and the oil seem to be around that. I took the car for a good spin with the cover off and there was no sign of a leak. So i am wondering was the joint slightly leaking. Do you know the joint i am talking about? The pipe seems to go to the front of the car, is it for a cooler? It is on a hard plastic very narrow pipe and there is two small grey inserts on the side of the union.

POST 4Original post

It might be one of the pipes or unions, or possibly the ATF cooler. That's what I thought it was on mine, but it turned out to be the gasket between the bell housing and the main gearbox casing. Had to have the box taken out and stripped down to replace the gasket. Hopefully it will be a simpler fix on yours.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That seal i think was done about a year and a half ago just before i got the car so hopefully it is not it. The oil just seemed to be around the union on the small plastic pipe that is going in the direction of the front of the car, i should have taken a picture of it. It only happened after a very long journey and the joint was rubbing on the cover, although after taking it out the other night there is no leak now. Touch wood

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How do you check the oil level in the tip box?

POST 7Original post

On a facelift 996 with the Mercedes box: The transmission must not be in the reduced driving program. The ATF temperature must be between 30 °C and 40 °C. An ATF inspection at an insufficient ATF temperature causes over-filling and an inspection at an excessive ATF temperature causes insufficient filling. Start the engine and, with the brake pedal depressed, engage each of the selector lever positions (P, R, N and D) three times in sequence for 3 seconds each time. Selector lever in position "P" and engine idling. The air-conditioning system and the heater must be switched off. The vehicle must stand horizontally. 1. Place oil collection pan under the transmission. 2. Connect the Porsche System Tester 2 and call up the ATF temperature. Note The ATF temperature must not be higher than 40 °C at the start of the test. 3. Move selector lever to position "P" and allow engine to idle. WARNING Danger of injury from emerging ATF fluid! ATF fluid can cause burns and chemical burns to the eyes! Wear protective goggles 4. Unscrew control screw -B- . If ATF escapes from the control bore and if the ATF temperature is 30 °C to 40 °C, the ATF level is Ok. If there is enough ATF fluid in the transmission, then continue with step 10. Note The control screw must be closed no later than when an ATF temperature of 45 °C is reached. 5. If no ATF escapes from the control bore even though approx. 40 °C has been reached, the ATF must be topped up. Note To undo and tighten the cap nut for the charging valve, counter with an open-ended wrench. 6. Screw off cap nut for the filling valve. 7. Screw special tool 9507/1 onto the filling valve and top up ATF via the filling valve until excess ATF emerges at the control bore. 8. Replace sealing ring for cap nut. 9. Screw on cap nut for filling valve. Tightening torque: 40 Nm (30 ftlb.) 10. Screw in ATF control screw with a new sealing ring. Tightening torque: 22 Nm (16 ftlb.) (Control Screw 'B' is the level plug at the top of the sloping surface of the gearbox sump pan).
