Managed to flush out all the plastic shards and crap using a hose pushed inside the header tank, then inside the inlets, outlets and hoses where the water pump mounts.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In the middle of replacing my water pump, the impeller of which has completely disintegrated, and I'm worried about floating bits of plastic blocking up the cooling system. Is there a procedure for flushing it out? Cheers

POST 2Original post

Not too sure about getting the water out, but make sure you replace the coolant with Porsche coolant. The Porsche coolant is good for the engine. (I was told by PARR)

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far as I can make out, Porsche coolant is just OAT coolant, or Organic Acid Technology (silicate free), and Halfords does OAT coolant too. OPC price for coolant is about £8 + VAT per litre, and the coolant capacity in a 996 is about 20 litres +/- a litre or two = £160 + VAT. Halfords do an OAT silicate free concentrate coolant at £22 for 5 litres (makes 10 litres when mixed 50:50), so would be £44 to top up my beetle. Can't stand paying over the odds when I don't have to!!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked up 10 litres of OAT coolant for £31 from my local motor factors - Porsche approved too Managed to flush out all the plastic shards and crap using a hose pushed inside the header tank, then inside the inlets, outlets and hoses where the water pump mounts. Seemed to wash out enough to make up the missing parts of my old pump! Fitted new pump tonight - took about 3 hours to remove, and same again to put back together, and saved myself about £260 - enjoyed it too! :mechanic:
