Somebody who knows these things better than I may dissagree with me but theres a slight hint of OPC fishing for a repair rather before its necessary perhaps?

its got a slight and I mean slight leak, no drips, just the slightest of slight , in Porsches words "very slight residue" they have been doing this for the past 20k miles, it had a clutch change 15k ago, wondered if that had anything to do with it ?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

How easy is it, or is it possible to change the differtial oil seal on a 996 ? its got a slight and I mean slight leak, no drips, just the slightest of slight , in Porsches words "very slight residue" they have been doing this for the past 20k miles, it had a clutch change 15k ago, wondered if that had anything to do with it ? theres no oil showing on the underneath of the car, never any marks anywhere I park, also I never have to top up the oil, but without sounding a complete numpty is the diff oil seperate to the engine oil ? Now im not about to suffer full on blown PP :eh!: but... is it something I should look at ? only way I noticed it was reading the breakdown in the service history.. thanks

POST 2Original post

If there are no drips, nothing under the car, no marks where you park and no loss of lubricant . and the OPC say there is only a very slight residue then I would suggest there is no problem at all. Somebody who knows these things better than I may dissagree with me but theres a slight hint of OPC fishing for a repair rather before its necessary perhaps?

POST 3Original post

I agree with mathamb. If there is no evidence of drips, and it has been like that for many thousands of miles, it isn't worth worrying about. That said, it isn't an expensive job. If it is a rear drive output shaft, the book time is one hour, and if it is the front seal for the cardan shaft output then it is 1.5 hours. All 3 can be accessed with the transmission installed. The seals are about £15, plus about £1 for the snap ring.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats good to hear, is it something youd ever consider doing yourself, or is it simply not worth the hassle with it being a 1 - 1.5 hr job ? leave it to a good indi....

POST 5Original post

It is so much easier to do on a 2-post lift. It would take at least twice as long without. If it was mine I would just wait until something else needs doing, or at the next service. But then I'm a fusspot, and I wouldn't blame you if you just left it.
