Hi all,
Long time viewer, first time poster. I have two questions about oil leaks and seals on
987.2
cars.
I recently received a PPI on a potential purchase of a
987.2
CS with 70k-ish miles. The car is in great cosmetic condition and drives well, plus it received an overall approval from the specialist doing the inspection. He did note, "front of the engine has a small oil leak, appears to be coming from the front crankshaft seal area. if leak worsens, front crankshaft seal will likely need to be replace." He said he was 75% sure the leak is coming from the seal. Oil has yet to leak onto the floor and the car doesn't have trouble keeping its oil level. Perhaps not relevant, but there is also some cracking on the front engine mount and the shifter cables have been replaced at 56k. Lastly, the engine data shows 121 ignitions for range 1 and nothing else beyond that.
Typically, I don't think I should be too worried about this given it's the only issue on the car in otherwise great condition. However, upon looking over the service reports in the Carfax, I noticed two other mentions of the front crankshaft seal. First, at 48k "Front crankshaft oil seal replaced, Crankshaft oil seal(s) replaced" and
then again at 61k
, "Front crankshaft oil seal replaced."
Two questions for you knowledgable folks:
1. What would be the reason for two front crankshaft seal replacements in the span of 15k miles and then, potentially, another front crankshaft seal issue at 10k miles later?
2. Are leaks / issues such as this expected on a car in otherwise good condition? The specialist didn't seem concerned.
I'd like to buy the car, but I'm having trouble assessing the severity of the issue.
Thank you for the help!
Two possible things I can think of:
Something else is leaking, the previous guy thought it was the crank seal too, and he had the seal replaced but that wasn't actually the problem
Sometimes the seal will wear a groove in the place where it rides on the crank (or there's a nick or scratch or something) in which case a new seal won't fix the problem. This is usually easily fixable using a thin shim called a speedi-sleeve. Mileage seems kind of low for that to happen, but who knows?
A 987.2 is getting on ten years old, old cars will leak a little oil. Generally if it's just seeping out and not pooling on the ground I don't worry about it too much (and if it's an Alfa I don't worry if it's pooling on the ground, either.) I would talk with the specialist about it, tell him what you found in the service reports, and see what he thinks: I'm sure he's more of an expert on this engine than I am.
Front engine mount starting to go is pretty typical on these cars and is not too bad to replace. The stock shifter cables typically fail at 40-60K so this one was right on schedule.
Thank you for the information! I feel like the second explanation makes sense given there are no other related problems in the past 20k or so miles (at least not any that were reported by the owners).
I did talk with the specialist, mentioned the service reports, and he didn't have an explanation. He thought it was a bit weird and perhaps the result of a bad seal replacement.
Before I commit to the car, would it make sense to have some type of engine inspection completed beyond the typical PPI -- like a leak-down or compression test?
