Hi everyone I have a 2008
Cayman
2.7 987 and I love it , I resently put a pair of rear winter tyres on 265/40 18 and on the way home
After about 2 miles the abs and traction light can on.
I have a fault code 4222 current wheel speed monitoring , I have just change the battery as the voltage was down to 11.8 v
But the lights still come . All wheel sensor are working checked them on the road with my scanner.
Any ideas would be great many thanks dan
The wheel sensors are not what failed. Since you did check them on the road and they were all reporting in - it's a different problem:
Did you just put winter tyres on the rear wheels? Front wheels are still summer tires? That also might be a cause if the rotational speed is different enough between the front and rear tires the ABS/Traction will not be a happy camper. The answer then is to put on front snows. That will also work much better in snow than a mixed setup where you have plenty of power but might loose steering traction at any moment.
Hi thanks for your reply, yes only winters on the rear , the rear wheels are a few km out if you compare them to the fronts when driving should all 4 wheels be the same ?
You need to install winter tires on all four wheels. Not just to solve the problem you're having but because summer tires are unsafe in cold temperatures. Typically temperatures below 40-45 degrees F make summer tire compounds dangerous. They get very hard, lose traction, and could very well end up damaged and unusable. All 4 tires should also be from the same manufacture and have the same tread pattern.
Not all identical - but they should all be sized to the allowable sizes
Porsche
has on a label on the drivers side door-jam, and in your owners manual. Your summer tires are undoubtedly 35 series. You've replaced one axles tires with 40 series tires. This won't work.
A stated you must stay within the factory front/rear tire diameter ratio range or what you are describing can happen. Porsche tire diameters are staggered with the rear typically being about an inch wider overall diameter vs the front. Going too far outside of this bias will trick the car into thinking the tires are slipping or spinning because the system is seeing different rolling speeds now from what its expects to see, and this can cause the traction control to randomly kick in or throw faults.
Abs and traction light fault fixed , the system didn't like only having winter tyres on the rear , fitted matching front winters and problem fixed .
Glad to hear it. I rather thought that was the problem.
