My car had a broken PCM1 which, fortunately, was refurbed (via Bath and Poland) for £300 and a duff Sat Nav which, given the price of a replacement, I replaced with a CD storage unit.

Suggestion

I don't know what parts you've already got in your car but if you want to change it using Porsche parts I'd brace yourself for every component being separate with varying degrees of availability (waiting time) and an unbelievable cost - ie £5k+ .

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi all, just got a '04 996 c4s, and i have a question :?: I'm use to having sat nav and a phone connection i.e. Bluetooth through the stereo system, I'm told that i can upgrade the units for this?... Can anyone help me with part numbers? I'm unsure if i need a PCM1 or 2 unit, do these come as standard with the phone kit bit or do i need an additional item(s) for this? is this a sim placement job or something else? sorry for the stupid question... i did try to search for an answer but couldn't find one... thanks in advance Martin (wkd1)

POST 2Original post

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum  On a 2004 MY 996, you'll need the PCM 2.0 unit - this was an option from the 2003 MY onwards. This unit comes with a phone module built in - there is a SIM tray for the card which slots into the centre console. The unit can also be specified with the phone handset too if you want to make calls and speak privately in the presence of other passengers. On the PCM units there is no bluetooth connectivity unfortunately; for this you'll have to look at aftermarket units such as Parrot (not advisable if you have an official Porsche warranty). ~ Maxie

I'm sure that GT4 will be able to answer your question in detail but whilst you're waiting for him I can tell you a bit based upon my experiences earlier this year. I've got an exploded diagram showing a number of component parts. 1 = aerial base 2 = aerial 3 = some sort of bracket 4 = a connection lead 5 = not shown (?) 6 = A PCM1 (exchange price £1487 inc vat so assume c£2k outright purchase). 7 = A PCM1 mounting bracket. 8 = Sat Nav Reader Unit (part no 96 642 122 12) Outright purchase price £1940 inc VAT or £1480 exchange. 9 = A mounting bracket for the sat nav reader unit. 10= some sort of dial/switch 11 = a telephone handset My car had a broken PCM1 which, fortunately, was refurbed (via Bath and Poland) for £300 and a duff Sat Nav which, given the price of a replacement, I replaced with a CD storage unit. I don't know what parts you've already got in your car but if you want to change it using Porsche parts I'd brace yourself for every component being separate with varying degrees of availability (waiting time) and an unbelievable cost - ie £5k+ .

POST 4Original post

There's an aftermarket MoBridge unit with Bluetooth being sold on here... Don't ask any questions though - you'll get a sarcastic dismissive response. :wack:

POST 5Original post

:floor: Good of you to point the OP in that diretion Spectraluk....that sarcasm wasn't directed at you by any chance was it? ~ Maxie

POST 6Original post

lol!! I only asked why it was for sale!! - think he's just mad at the world..!

POST 7Original post

Maxie is right, no 996 PCM model allows Bluetooth connectivity. 997 units do, but are not retrofittable. You will need a third-party solution, as suggested. I have no knowledge on these, sorry.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the answers guys... i have no problems having to put a sim in a slot, i have a spare linked to my number so it can stay in the car, i will look around for a PCM2 unit then, i have seen some on evilbay.... i working overseas at the moment but the car will be waiting for me when i return, hopefully some nice weather will remain for me to drive it lol.... thanks again Martin

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

does anyone have the part numbers for the PCM2 unit i will need? Martin

POST 10Original post

One of the MOD team will probably come to your rescue on that one, they are usually quite resourceful on stuff like that which is a great help to us all!! :worship:

POST 11Original post

I can recommend getting rid of the PCM and installing a double DIN Pioneer AVIC touchscreen system. As well as looking reasonably OE you get touch screen everything including nav, contacts, iPhone charge and control, SDRAM storage, video, speed cameras on the mapping... Oh and it offers full Bluetooth handsfree voice. Do a search for AVIC - Richard H, myself and a few others have them installed. http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=53660&start=50

thanks... i suspect that i will go this route... Martin
