Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have a 2006 Cayman S with 28,000 miles and time for the annual servicing. Got mixed messages from various local dealers and service providers about need to change the plugs at only 28K miles/5 years versus 60K/4 years as recommended in the manual. Decided that the possible issue of threads getting frozen trumped any value in delaying further. So I had them changed; the mechanic described the old ones as in pretty good shape. However, the big news for me was the difference in performance when I got behind the wheel. My car responded like the one I took for a test drive at the dealer in 2006. Super peppy! It is so much more responsive at all rev ranges, but especially noticeable for me at the lower rpm range since I do a good deal of city driving. I can't see myself waiting four years to change them again; that responsiveness is too much fun to give up. A very nice bonus on top of good preventive maintenance. FWIW.

POST 2Original post

Well, the spark plugs *should* be fine after only 28k miles. That was the only thing they touched?

POST 3Original post

I replaced the spark plugs in my Cayman after 4 years/50K miles, and didn't notice any significant change in engine performance or efficiency afterwards. Perhaps some latent problem on your car was coincidentally "corrected" (e.g. poor ignition coil connection, etc.) in the process of replacing the spark plugs. In any case, the old plugs should have tell-tale markings that would indicate anything out-of the-ordinary. Unless, as previously suggested, something else was serviced at the same time (e.g. dirty MAF sensor cleaned, clogged engine air filter replaced, etc.) that could cumulatively account for the improvement you've described. In any case: Happy motoring!

POST 4Original post

What kind of plugs did they put in? I wonder if they used a hotter or colder plug, or platinum, or four electrodes, or something different than factory. Might be worth looking at the part numbers on the receipt.
