Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. It did happen just after I filled my car up from getting quite low, so I thought one possibility may have been that the engine had sucked some crap up from the bottom of the fuel tank.

yep, i've had this one in the past, thought the engine had self destructed when it first happened but nothing for quite a while now, not since I changed plugs last year certainly so whether that sorted it i can't say.

I checked things out as best I could but couldn't see a problem, so I started it up again and it hasn't happened since.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

firstly, hello to alll as i am anew member to this site. i have owned my 996 carrera 4 for a year with no faults at all but over the last couple of weeks i have a problem starting it after i have driven it on the motorway or driving it (a little) hard. the first time it happened it sounded like a complete bag of nails and kept cutting out and thought i had done major damadge, but it came to life once i kept my foot on the accelerator, gave it a couple of blips then drove fine all the way home.
since then its only done it a couple of times and always runs fine but if anybody knows what could be causing this i would be greatful
thanks
michael
I can't help, but mine also did this to me. Again it was after a spirited run, during whichI had to make two stops. Trying to start after each stop had the car really coughing. I checked things out as best I could but couldn't see a problem, so I started it up again and it hasn't happened since.

hi
i have had the same problem too. second start can be really sluggish but never got to the bottom of it!! not necessarily after a spirited drive with me - i can just pop to out for petrol and it does it or it can be after a long blast too??? would be great if someone could shed some light on this!
whenever i take it to Northway (highly recommended) for servicing i mention it but they find nothing wrong and it doesn't happen with them.
from posting about this before a starter issue has been suggested and also battery problems :?:
i try and avoid stopping and starting where possible now - not ideal!!
Not sure whether my 'problem' is the same but; let's say I start the car, go to move off and it stalls (which doesn't happen often!). When I go to immediately re-start the car the engine almost seems to fire too soon and there's a slight sound of lots of metallic objects falling down the stairs which then immediately disappears.
I've always just thought that it must be some type of carberation effect that the unburned petrol is having on the cylinders...?
Is this the same?
I seem to have had this (hot starting) problem occasionally with every Porsche I've owned, 944, 964, 993, 996 (GT3). Whatever it is, the car has always started, even if reluctant at first, but can then be fine for weeks/months.
I think it might be a case of 'they all do that sir'
Would be intrigued to find out a true cause.
Haven't had any odd metallic noises or 'coughing' though, I can see why that might be worrying...

thanks guys for all your responses, so i guess i will just leave it be. though i am passing by porsche centre hatfield in the next couple of days so if i hear of a fix then i will keep you posted.
right,,, now for the really difficult question...how do i get a pic up of my car when my profile shows up...feeling a little jealous of you guys with your nice profile pics!
would love to show off my mint 996 c 4 with aerokit!
looking forward to the update - I have the same issues as adrian, fine when cold but a sort of clangy start from hot. Always been like that and recently had a full service!
Just to be clear, guys; I'm not sure that I have the same problem as the OP but I get this 'effect' if the car stalls and I then
immediately
restart it again - say, 1 or 2 seconds later.
I have a slight incline at the end of my drive which I can normally reverse up without any throttle at all unless I hit it slightly off-time with fallings revs which then might get it to stall.
I then immediately restart the engine which sometimes gives me this sort of 'rattled' effect from the engine - as though the firing order of the cylinders is out of kilter, or something. The rattling disappears as soon as she fires. If I wait for half a minute or so to restart it doesn't happen. I only usually do have to restart quickly as the front end of the car is still hanging out over the road.
Adrian.
hot starting solution
hi guys, :salut:
I have just had my 996 in for this issue. The information written on my invoice states; Cure poor warm starting emmission vent solenoid fail causing a rich mixture when warm. Since this problem was fixed it has not re-occured. Hope this helps. :bye:
interesting!!
do you have the price for the parts by any chance?
this has been bugging me on my 2000 C4 for over 2 years!!
i'll definitely mention it on the next service at Northway....
:thumb:
thanks for the info there 911 pimp. will get mine diagnosed this week and see if i have the same problem. i just get used to starting it up with my foot on the accelerator when its warm but because i have the loudest sports exhaust known to mankind, anyone who is whithin 20 feet of my car either jumps with fright or thinks im a flash git blipping the throttle for a bit of attention!
