As a competitor, if your car isn’t competitive enough once BoP is applied across the field, you need to change your own formula and now maybe they think that the flexibility of lightness isn’t working out and it’s better to have more outright performance from the get-go and take the weight penalty ballast or air intake restrictions per event like the other competitors do.

I registered an interest a while back. The OPC sales guy called to see if I was still keen and to strike up a conversation about a month ago. Looks like they are definitely coming…
As far as I'm aware, it's coming later this year but final allocation numbers have yet to be confirmed to Dealer Principals. Expectations are that there won't be many, so if you're not top of your dealer's list you ain't getting one.
That's the gist of what I'm hearing anyway!
Yea likewise, sounds like there won’t be many. Last chat with OPC was that GT4/Spyder are now “N/A” on their systems - despite quite a few deposits being held. Wonder if “Junior GT” production is instead getting flipped over to GT4 RS only, or is that not how it works?
That's how it's worked for 911 GT3s up to now I think. Regular GT3 first, then into the GT3 RS with either a slight overlap or none at all.
The Rennlist rumours are that the spec is awesome, but until it's fully revealed who knows? The GT4 Clubsport race car is getting an upgrade for the 2022 season which usually begins at Daytona in January, and it will be closely linked to the GT4RS. Therefore it's likely to come out in the next six months or so, and quite likely this year.
As for numbers to be produced, people are expecting it to be low volume but how low is low? 1-2 cars per OPC seems to be the best guess at the moment which would be what, 2000 cars worldwide?
Spec starter for 10/debate:
Centrelocks, PDK, cage, buckets, carbon bonnet, plexiglass, a few trick bits n bobs, ceramics as an option….?
Price, £105K basic plus options/ceramics etc?

I think similarly to you plus 450bhp-ish, PDK only, vented bonnet and front wings, trick rear quarter engine cooling/air intake system.

Spoke with OPC last week. Confirmed I'm on but they have had no updates to timing or if they are even getting any !!! Fills me with confidence ..... Haha

No deposit asked for as nothing showing on their system yet to put it against. After what I spent last year with them I'm glad !!!!!

I heard the outer Hebrides OPC was taking deposits!
I was in Porsche Edinburgh last night and asked the sales team what they knew about it and how many they expected to see. They said they expect to only get 1. Such a shame if that is going to be the case.
Could have been their way of saying I have zero chance.
They also said 718's and Carrera model production to be stopped during 2022.

1-2 cars per OPC seems to be the word on the street, and yes that would be a big shame.
By 718s and Carreras, do you mean the Base models of each but S/GTS/T etc will remain?
Yeah I didn't ask for clarification but I took it as all 718 models and 992 Carrera models (base, S, 4S). But higher sec 992 will still be being built in 2022.
Not sure if to allow for other models to be built instead.

718 Spyder and GT4 are already “NA” on the OPC systems, despite obviously still being on the configurator!

They all but ended Carrera/S production for about a year of production on 991.2. Only cars coming through to OPC’s were Carrera T’s and lots of GTS’s. Be a while before production returns to normal so makes sense to make higher spec cars with those rare micro chips.

Mid-November announcement is pretty much nailed on.
Thats the date that had been provisionally given, however very unlikey to be revealed until next year now!
Certainly the rumblings are getting stronger…
Something is coming soon…
Race teams in the US have already had a briefing on the new race car with the updated engine that will be homologated in the ‘road’ RS.

I hope you like paying overs if you're not a VIP client at your OPC!
I have a email confirmed pre-order for a GT4RS, the Netherlands.
My OPC said there will be plenty 992 GT3 cars coming for 2022, but the GT4RS will be very rare indeed.
What I did learn from Rennlist; ETA LA Motorshow November 9th or some what around that date
Some "insiders" keep claiming the car wil have 500HP and can do 9K RPM
Well, we`ll find out soon :-)

Looks like the engine might be technically capable… but homologated back down to a lower level for the street car.
Race car will be a bit of a change from the original
Clubsport concept that had a ‘zero’ life/mileage interval drivetrain(to keep running costs lower than cup car) and looks like it is moving much more in the cup car direction with service/rebuild intervals being required.
I wander what exactly Porsche are going to create here with the GT4 RS? If it’s going to be super rare, maybe only 1 per dealer, what’s that 40-50 cars in the UK? Maybe a 500hp, NA engine that runs to 9K, CR box, 992 GT3 front end?? And dare I say it could it, will it, eat a GT3 for breakfast?? Perhaps it all heads towards a genuinely unique combination that will elevate it towards 3RS 4.0 levels of desirability? Or a parts bin special?

Total unknown…. It’s the question I’ve been asking since day 1 also.
What is known is that there is a new race car coming and they’ll need to homologate parts for that… and so the RS is the way to do that.
The current 718 CS gets spanked in multi-make series, including the likes of:
Merc AMG GT
Macca 570 GT4
Audi R8 GT4
These cars are much more powerful, but heavier, and although BoP is used to bring them make in line with the Cayman which is less powerful but lighter, the deficit is often too big on the larger circuits. So Porsche need more power in this category.
So I think we see a dual launch of the new CS and the RS or the launches will be in close proximity to one another, and it points to the RS being a very limited swan song…. but although it will share the parts with the CS I think it will be knocked back a bit for the street.
I can’t see them putting a 500hp 718 RS on the road, from the factory. Would be happy to be wrong though.

In my opinion, while the engineers might want to take the RS to 500BHP. There’s no a snowballs chance the marketing guys will let it trash the flagship GT3. So be amazed if it exceeds 450BHP

Really? the cayman gt4 has nearly a 100kg advantage in weight if not more over major competitors these days. Power wise the other gt4 are limited down to 420-450hp typically so they are not exactly overwhelmingly more powerful than the 425PS or whatever the 718 CS MR now produces.
Lack of performance is less an issue of 'power' particularly given the weight advantage but more that Porsche are not playing BoP politics as well as the others by chucking money at SRO and the other series holders.

That is all totally logical if the GT4 RS come in significant numbers. However if it’s a very limited edition I think they could get away with it.

As you know, Porsche came at this new GT4 class with a ground up approach, hoping to change the game ref costs…. The others didn’t have the same vision or spirit and came at it, top down… ‘dumbing down’ a bigger model.
It seems like Porsche have had enough of standing by being good boys, whilst the others walk away with all the silverware… and they can sell from road cars off the back of it too.
Edited by TDT on Sunday 5th September 08:42
I think this aligns with what I’m saying…..
Updated aero, same McPherson Strut suspension
It will have 500ps max output which they can knock back with air intake restrictor plates once BoP is applied.
Brings it in line with the wider operating range of the other cars in the category.
Still don’t believe that it will have 500ps for the road though. Would be happy to be wrong.

If your car isn't competitive you agree to pay more for sponsorship and promoting said series to get better BoP adjustments. Porsche know how the game is played in GTE and GT3 and have done so themselves quite effectively after all.....
Now I don't fundamentally disagree that a car with more outright performance is one with potentially more flexibility to tweak adjustments but fundamentally the gt4 race car lacks grip both aero and mechanical compared to major competitors and it also has a less technically capable suspension setup with struts vs double wishbone. The new car doesn't seem to obviously address that (unsure re aero obviously) and while an increase of engine power to 500PS in a NA car that will now be limited down will help by having more power available a little earlier, if the corresponding relative weight gain per BoP negates that then you are back to square 1.
It's a political game for BoP rather than necessarily a technical capability one......
Interesting stuff T, where did you get that info?
The bore and stroke of both the GT4 and GT3 are the same so if the race car is getting circa 500bhp then I'm assuming Porsche can just port over the "good stuff" from the GT3 engine to increase revs and gain more power in the GT4.
What are the homologation rules do you know? The base GT4 is clearly enough to homoligate the car but with the current Clubsport having a non-production 3.8 litre engine there must be some leeway on what can be used.
From Rennlist. It ties in with the November launch date mentioned previously and also something no-one here on PH has discussed yet - the upcoming Spyder RS
Interesting to see it says no Cayman models except for the GT4RS, at least that's how I read it. So there will be no more Caymans after this year and the GT4RS run out special?
Any info on that T?
I’m not sure to be honest but I read that as they will only be doing cayman variant of the RS at the time of launch, and then may do a Spyder RS later. I’m guessing SoS is Send off Special?
But as you are intimating, it could be that they switch all other cayman variant production capacity to the RS - Depends on if it’s a limited numbered car or, just production capacity limited for the model year.
Reading it again, and looking at the other rows, I think you're right in that the Cayman variant is first followed by the Spyder at a later date. For the other items, I think it's:
CW = Calendar Week
SoS = Start of Shipments
I'm guessing the first column is launch/configurator go-live which is mid-November, bang on what we're expecting.
The second column I'm assuming is when the first builds or deliveries will start, which is mid-Feb. That would tie in with a November launch.
TDT said:
Haha, makes more sense… I think I’m over thinking things now!
I really enjoy all this cloak and dagger stuff in the lead up to a new release, it's good fun! As a huge fan of the Cayman platform it'll be a real shame if the GT4RS is a very limited edition, I really hope they make as many as they can so mere mortals can spec one up from new but I seriously doubt they will
It is really good to read the latest rumours. Hopefully the GT4RS will be given every opportunity to be the send off special that many had hoped for - no longer handcuffed to fit into the corporate hierarchy.
If the performance is close to a previous generation GT3 then I see no reason why this should not be reflected in the price. It will probably cost a lot more than a GT4 but a proper GT engine, lightweight materials and rarity will not come cheaply imho.
The Spyder RS will surely be rarer than rocking horse s
t if its '23 car? Can't imagine Porsche making many if that is as rumoured the last year of 982 production. Any word on the number of Spyders likely worldwide? Super limited run next xmas for spring deliveries that makes GT4RS's look positively common?
I don’t think we can predict numbers… some have said 1000 worldwide, some have said 1000 for the US only.
That said… Boxster 25 (which is an exclusive cosmetics optioned GTS) is 1250 units only… Globally.
I think Porsche will take pleasure in obfuscating production numbers and feeding the frenzy.
