Does this sound like water pump failure, and if so, is this easily changed by a DIY'er (not a stranger to spanners etc)?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, Just came back home and noticed a rattling noise coming from the rear for the past mile or so. Parked it up and white smoke coming out of the 'boot' lid, and water leaking from water pump area. Does this sound like water pump failure, and if so, is this easily changed by a DIY'er (not a stranger to spanners etc)? Does anyone have the procedure to change the water pump? Thanks

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just opened up the header tank to check the level, and another big gush came out from underneath....

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your help Richard - very much appreciated. I take it the tensioner pulley is the one slap bang in the middle of them all? :worship:

POST 5Original post

The pulley moves easily enough to get the belt off. Before diving in let it dry off, add some water when cold and check that it's not a split hose or clip that has let go as sometimes water will splash over the engine pulleys/alternator and cause squealing.....suggesting the pump has gone......when it has not! Chances are it is though but spend 10 mins confirming before picking up the spanners.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the checks wizard - unfortunately, it was the water pump :x Just removed it using the attached link, which showed a step-by-step guide to replacing the water pump: http://p-car.com/996/diy/waterpump/ The only possible addition I could make to the link would be that you have to remove one of the smaller pulleys above the water pump to allow it to be lifted up and out. Took me about 2 hours to get it off - new one coming on Friday, so I'll post how that goes... Other than that, this is a TOP link, and could do with being posted in FAQ / workshop procedure section if any op's pick this up.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

here's what was left of my water pump impeller... Looks a bit poorly eh...
