Yep not as sporty and you can feel a bit disconnected when the TC is not locked up but towing is NOT sporty and likely never will be.

You will not regret adding the AS, I use the variable ride height to tweak the ramp approach angle when loading the trailer...

tow bar, I use the wife's X5 30d to tow and it's awesome, not self levelling though.

As far as freeway driving, as you come up to a car it will appear in the dash and you change lanes before you get close enough for your car to start slowing.

You set the cruise & your on the freeway when you come up behind another car of course you slow down, by the time you notice the slowdown youve lost momentum & then have to sped up again to go around the car in front.

The current one is probably the last of the real cars with hydraulic PS and none of that annoying start/stop and similar crap just to save 0.01L/100Km.

I'll see how I go but I'm considering selling the 993S, especially if I went the GTS, as I suspect the Medium Mac will do everything the 993 does for me, and a lot better to boot (except the style).

Anyone done it / doing it? All good? I note they have a 2,400 kg braked capacity and I'd be towing up to 2,300 kg, but mostly around the 2,000 kg mark.
Many thanks.
If you go with the Macan drive it first. I guess as you're considering towing you would be after the diesel. I had one (diesel Macan S) for the day last week when my car was in for a service. At first I really liked it but then I noticed that it has a strange delay from stop to go when at the lights after the engine restarts when you take your foot off the brake. You hit the gas, the car starts and then there is a delay before it goes. Initial reaction is more throttle and then one second later the car suddenly decides oh the engine has started again and wham you are off. It's all very subtle but you do feel that you are still at the lights when others have already left.
At the end of the day I hated it and when I explained to the my guy at Porsche what had happened he said yes common feedback and he had noticed it too when he drove one. I would go the petrol I think as it must be a diesel thing. Would drive me nuts if it was my daily, otherwise really liked the Macan (just not the diesel).
^ good feedback. Can you disable the auto stop / start? Also is this annoying habit particular to the diesels? I'm test driving on Saturday so I'll ask the sales guy and see for myself. I too had a loaner this week but in my case it was a VW Polo and the stop start thing annoyed the crap out of me. Never had that on a car I've owned.
Yep all new cars have stop start now (european cars always) and yes can be disabled. Happens automatically when you hit the sport button or it can be just turned off by hitting the A button (usually on the centre console). The default setting though is always on so you need to start the car and disable every time you enter the vehicle and start it up. Cannot be permanently disabled. You do get used to it though. In my Mercedes it seems odd when the car does not turn off at the lights now but in the Merc (petrol) the stop start function is seamless. My Porsche is the same but I do tend to drive it in Sport mode so the stop start is always off, unless I am in traffic then I leave stop start on (again as it is petrol the stop start is seamless). The Macan diesel however that was a different story altogether. I left it in stop start mode for the day as I was in traffic a lot but that delay was so so annoying.
Bottom line when you first get a car with stop start it seems so odd. After 3 years with cars with the function it now seems odd when I drive my wife's Mazda 2 and it does not shut down at the lights. You get used to it, just like heads up display and auto cruise control all seem normal to me now and all seems odd in the Mazda which does not have these functions.
Last hire car I had was a Toyota Hybrid with stop / start. Took me 5 minutes to work out how everything worked and what the various things on the dashboard meant
Last few hire cars I had while looking at 996s had stop start, all were petrol, but in some the lag was worse that others. I think I'd put up with the lag for the overall superior drivability of a diesel (in my opinion at least, as someone who has had diesels in both SUV and sedans for the past 15 - 20 or so years
Make stop-start fun, try to blip the throttle in anticipation of the lights changing to have the engine running, to go on green! Or are you texting?
We had a diesel F11 (5 touring) and the stop-start in that was faster than the current C63s we have...go figure...
I just bought the petrol Macan and had tow bar fitted as well. I will be towing my 22 foot this weekend with it for the first time it will be all of 2.4t I would say.
i will keep you posted how it does. I also have a Jayco van I will be towing over Christmas with the Macan.
I have a Macan (3.6TT Petrol) - tow with it regularly. Drives really well but uses juice when towing.
The stop/start thing annoyed me at first and I always disabled it when I first got in the car. But now I don't bother. You quickly learn a slight lift off the brake pedal (so the car still doesn't move) effectively restarts the car, and you soon begin to just do that whenever you need to in advance.
You cheeky man! Red or blue. Absolutely no white, black ,grey or silver and I'm farked if I'm paying for PTS. Quite like the black and tan interior to go with the blue and I'd go with the smallest wheels largest tyre sidewall so it doesn't ride like a biarch (assuming an S, not a GTS). Even the Carmine Red is a total rip, so blue would be my preference as it's a standard metallic colour. Could be second hand though so might depend on what's around.
I'll see how I go but I'm considering selling the 993S, especially if I went the GTS, as I suspect the Medium Mac will do everything the 993 does for me, and a lot better to boot (except the style). Then I can concentrate on my performance jalopies. I'll float an EOI out there if it comes to it, so this is a pre-EOI, EOI.
You've changed man.............it used to be all about the colour threads. I do appreciate use of the term "jalopies" though as it is just not used often enough, especially when it comes to Porsches.
A sign of you becoming a farmer I guess, Macan will do well on plough.
Pretty much nails it. I will be the last person to buy a car with stop start and if I do reluctantly find myself with one I will build an electronic button pusher to ensure it is always off. Stupid manufactures of course their stupid system can be defeated.
Looks like the Porsche GT cars at least for now are not goining down this stupid BS path of usless trinkets like start stop, regenerative braking using standard alternator and battery, coasting, virtual gearbox etc.
But back on topic. Besides F trucks and similar the Cayenne S Diesel 4.2 V8 and its cousins the VW TDI V8 Touareg and Q7 are at the top of the tow tree with 3500 Kg and 800+ Nm. Towing 3500 with a dual cab usually means that you can only have two people and a tank of fuel before you exceed their pitiful GCM
if you plan on doing a bit of towing a Diesel is a must as it takes more power to tow and Diesels have lots of that at low rpm so do it much more effortlessly.
My wife's Audi has the stop/start fitted. You can turn it off once you start the car by simply pressing a button or leave it in dynamic mode. It is not an issue for me unless you want to pull out on someone fast.
My only concern would be to future wear down the track with it starting so often. Won't be my problem though as i only keep the wife's cars for 2 years as i don't want to hear the whinging if it breaks down
Via the SMH website (

)..... I suggest you ditch the Porsche car and get one of the 3 fastest cars for sale in Australia...
The Grand Cherokee Trackhawk will become the third most-powerful vehicle to be sold in Australia, with its 6.2-litre supercharged Hemi V8 producing 522kW and 868Nm of torque – only bettered by the Ferrari 812 Superfast and Lamborghini Aventador S.
It packs enough punch to launch the monstrous SUV from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 289km/h.
Hell, that's quite a car, a
lthough I expect that it wouldn't be this quick when towing 2 tonne. With a resounding 'f ck you' to the fuel misers of the world at 16.8l/100km, the towing range would be measured in 'gallons per mile' and not the more typical 'miles per gallon'.
It’s locked in Eddie. Except now my wife is saying I should consider something bigger so a Cayenne will also be perused. Can’t see it happening myself, but an open and fair process must be seen to be done.
Controversial question but, has sir considered other brands of SUV?
I only say this because there are some half decent deals about at the moment on the Land Rover range, my V8 Sport’s up to 240k and still happily tows 2-3 tonne car trailers. I’d also have a look at the VW Toerag, work colleagues report good things about them for the money and spec levels.
Sir has, but the reality is most of the time it won't be towing and nothing beats the Macan for driver involvement and fun so I'll stay in the fold on that basis.

Porsche towing ...hmm not long distance.. thats what a Landrover Disco or Rangie Vogue is for towed about 150- 180,000 kms + with mine .. cars , cars+ harleys , enclosed trailers etc etc
13l/100 Worst at sub 120kmh speeds with 6M enclosed trailer 15l . pushing on tin the night at 120-140kms
11l/100 general with P car on the Tilta
I like the idea of a very solid block of metal in front of the trailer , isnt a macan a little small and scary in the wind ?
I agree with Symsy. By the time you've loaded all your kit into the towing car and the trailer, you're not only long but heavy. Maybe not technically over weight but the 'tail can wag the dog' in quite simple circumstances so I reckon most would suggest that you get a better tow vehicle. You want to arrive with only a little stress and fatigue from the long drive and not wound up ready to smack your head against a wall
If you want a daily driver as well as a tow vehicle then consider getting 2 to suit the purpose (but having another vehicle creates other headaches, yet another thing to maintain and store while not in use) by getting an older and cheaper tow vehicle for the occasional duty.... And perhaps hire a couple of different ones and use them to tow before buying.
Big diesels are great for towing, and despite the known issues with recent and late model LR Discovery, there's nothing they can't do if you throw enough good money at repairs (symsy being English is a little one sided in his view of them.... I like the D3 in 4x4 kit but I don't have enough money to own and maintain one, think of them being like a classic car! ) The big brand Jap diesels are also good.
Been towing with a defender for 4 yrs - just did a drive shaft, first repair/problem so the whole LR reliability thing (in my experience) is a little overblown. Generally trailer @1800kg + Porsche & then kit in the back of the LR. While that's probably 3 - 500kgs heavier at the back end than your setup I wouldn't want much lighter at the front towing end. There's nothing worse than feeling like you're being pushed around by the load.
Defender and Discovery are quite different animals Gavin. There's probably good reliability behind both and perhaps the Disco driver is more of a 'car driver' and expects it to always go, whereas a Defender driver is more 'adventurer' and understands that stuff happens. Dunno. All I know is that 4 people I know have had issues with the Disco and despite these, they continue to love the brand so they pour money in to their cars that are not all that old. I owned a diesel Jackaroo for 8 years and 225k kms and it was a tail of woe and reflects most ownership of that model (and Isuzu themselves agree) but the petrol equivalent is a great vehicle and I've since put on maybe 400k kms or so in 10 years with 2 of them.
It sounds like both you and Symsy have had a great run with yours and they are a well known and much trusted vehicle around the world.
As I said previously, I'd love to own one. I also appreciate that most cars will fail over time regardless of brand and maintenance schedule so I'm not expecting the impossible. I drive a lot of kms each year in a multitude of vehicles and I know that I need to be able always rely on the car getting me and /or my family to the shops/work/friends and back which is always no less than a 25+ km each way journey with dodgy phone signal.
But getting back to Master Chop's issue.....buy a bigger tow car than the Macan, mate.
Pork chops.... I have a bright blue Macan S with the Petrol motor riding on 21’ wheels. It’s comfy and doesn’t feel harsh at all so don’t be worried about large wheels.
i just towed my 22’” foot boat this morning and it did it with ease. Off course not as easy as my diesel twin turbo discovery but never the less it was fine doing.
Go the blue and go big wheels
Good to hear you have both Pcar and LR and can give us some comparison..
Again without pull the thread sideways .. Is interesting you say the Landy pulls with more ease yet the Macan should have better output figures yes?
PS To any Landy owners out there , buy your self the Ford Brake light switch sensor , keep it in your glovebox , you will be amazed how many of the gremlins go away
When the $40 part applied and what a worn or dodgy one will do to send rogue codes to the fault bus... IGNORE THOSE IDIOT LIGHTS.. especially english ones , I should know Im a Pomme
Would love to hear from an Range Sport Diesel V8 drivers saw one at auction for 80k the other day , makes for a grunty tow truck
Sorry Chops... you really need another Porsche - Not!!!
I think it’s clear a larger more powerful car is better for towing. For me no matter how much I tow it will be the minority of the time, so getting a massive lugger with not much else going for it seems illogical and I’m not up for a 2 car strategy as I’ve got way too many cars as it stands. So it just needs to tow 2T reasonably well.
I drove a petrol Macan S, a Macan Turbo and a diesel Cayenne. All are competent and luxurious and well built and nice but they left me cold as far as a driving experience is concerned. The turbo was lacklustre compared to my expectations. My slightly modified 335i is a sledgehammer compared to the turbo. So I’ve slightly reset my expectations around it. I still think the Macan is the best option for me and I’ll go back and drive the Macan S diesel and a Macan GTS next week and see where that leads me to. I actually thought the diesel Cayenne had the best performance feel as you actually feel the turbo coming on where as the others are so linear and boring.
Blue looks good and I really like Carmine Red too. White is acceptable, but that is all. I think 21s are a good size.
Thanks for the feedback all.
Chops you have to try the Cayenne V8 Diesel S it will reset what you expect from a Diesel. Especially if you like slaying hot hatches. They also sound like a V8 and not a sewing machine.
I have the Tourareg V8 TDI Rline as a daily. It handles and rides way better than you would expect, gets 7.2L100 on the highway and a bit over 10 around town and I flog it pretty hard. Parking is not to bad with 360deg cameras with lots of sensors. And most of all no matter what safety rating a cars has BIGGER is BETTER.
Chops I forgot to add for towing you need self leveling air suspension it makes a world of differance.
Those Volksies are a $100k car every day of the week. Macan money but a 3.5T towing capacity. Trade off time. I think the Turbo Macan has air suspension but not sure if self levelling. Best thing about the Turbo was the ride.
My experience was very similar, I was all set to buy a Macan GTS so I drove S petrol, diesel and Turbo (no GTS out at that stage). Performance from petrol cars was somehow bland and the engine didn't feel special. Turbo didn't feel that quick strangely. I actually felt the diesel was the better drive, torque is great for towing too. offensive options and prices drove me to buy a Q7. Hasn't got a. tow bar, I use the wife's X5 30d to tow and it's awesome, not self levelling though. The SQ7 looks the goods but $50k more for the V8 is a bit rich. Touareg is getting a bit long in the tooth but same V8 for $100k could be a good buy.

@Redracn
‘s advice I’ve found this. Essentially an SUV version of my SC! I’m excited about it. Right amount of klms for a second hand car and love the killer colour combo. And it’s in Vic. It’s not the Macan and misses PDK but I’ll drive one of these next week and see if it lights my fire. I can be spending over $100k on a car and not be excited about it.
^ as if
I’d be terrified of the depreciation on a $150k Audi. I know all of these options are going to have a lot of depreciation, but I think an expensive Audi is the worst option. Second hand Porsche is probably the best.
New Touareg is due soon (and Cayenne too) and that will probably mean the introduction of start stop and electric power steer to the Diesel V8 and probably coasting etc. The current one is probably the last of the real cars with hydraulic PS and none of that annoying start/stop and similar crap just to save 0.01L/100Km.
The newer Audi 4.0V8 with the electric turbo assist looks interesting. Should be real strong off the line which is hard to imanging as the Audi 4.2V8 (Current Cayenne and Touareg) will chirp all 4wheels if you stomp on the throttle.
Yep not good and I would not remove it but most if not all Dual Cabs do not have a DPF so WTF are the regulators thinking. T
hey are a comercial vehicle and exempt so are free to spew a lot more rubbish into the air.
It already has 850Nm isn't that enough ? 1000 is just being greedy.?. I have had no issues with the DPF and it is not noticable except for the very odd occasion when I pull into the garage and you can smell the heat when it regenerates. It works well with no smoke at all even at full power. The exhaust smells more like a well tuned LPG car and not like a diesel at all. But I have to say there is nothing like the smell of a large diesel engine starting in the morning just a shame it is not good for you.
Between Saturday and today I've driven the Macan S Petrol, Diesel, Turbo and GTS. I've also driven the 6cl and 8cl diesel Cayennes.
Let's start with the Cayennes. Overall they're noticeably dated compared to the Macan and therefore are off the list. The only thing they have on their side is bulk. Funnily enough I found the 4.2l TT V8 to be very laggy and have shithouse throttle response. Ruined the drive for me. Sound and shove were cool but IMHO not a nice thing on balance.
Macans. Drove them all and deemed them to be fairly average from a dynamics perspective. That was until I drove a Merc GLC43. What a piece of junk that is. Yuk yuk yuk. So back to the now, much better Macan range. They're all good and on second drive, perhaps with me being more used to the car, I really liked them. Diesel has real punch but a bit laggy low down. Start stop thing didn't annoy me. S lacks the diesel mid range thump. GTS, as you'd imagine, is a nice jigger. The louder zorst makes the engine feel much more alive and I really like the suspension in that car. Always feels right and very compliant and comfortable at the same time. Love to feel that set up with air suspension.
In the end the heart wants the GTS, and there are not many around so new purchase seems logical. There are heaps of Ss around and they'd make fine second hand purchases. But only the GTS could delight me when the moment was right, which is something I fear the others may lack. Either way I'm winning.
As usual, pay to play.
What about the Kia Sorento?????????, .................................you know that's where your heart is.
With the Carnival, the Stinger ( you have on order but sheepishly deny!) and the Sorento, you would have what the Koreans say as Jjang-ee-ya !
Do what I did....buy a low km Q7! Mine had 5000km on the clock, MY17 Q7 with towbar optioned, new was near $120k, paid low $80s, depreciation taken care of ;-)
Heart vs logic is a difficult fight.
Heart says buy the Macan, its a Porsche, and you love Porsches.
Logic says get a vehicle that will do the towing easily and safely. From what you've described and others have fed back to you, the Macan isn't the obvious choice. The Cayenne is not your cup of tea either so another brand is the proper option.
I bought a demo Q7 18 months ago. Not quite as cheap as yours and I'd take a bath if I sold it now with 60k kms. Great drivetrain and interior but I'd define it as a bit of a bland bus, nowhere near as fun or sporty feeling as a Macan. but it did force me to drive slower which was part of the grand plan. And 7 seats for the kids birthday parties once a year. I doubt it fits Nicks brief.
While the Q7 has done everything well, I prefer the drive of my wife's 2.5 year old X5 30d. I've also found myself quietly looking on line at Macan, GLC (not now after Nicks comments) and others. Mmmmmm Macan GTS......just needs a V8 in place of that crappy V6.
I'm not sure I agree with you. I'm not loyal to Porsche for any other reason that they make the best cars - feel free to disagree but that's how I see it. Logic says you buy a car that suits all your needs best and towing is but one of them. As I said before it won't be the last word in towing, but I'm sure it will be fine (as stated above by others), and it will do a shite load of other things I value. I've driven the Merc and it's pants, and i'm not getting a BMW, Audi, VW or Landrover for a multitude of reasons. Too many to list, too little time.
I agree Chops that Porsche make the best cars but I would qualify that by saying Sports Cars only. My now moved on Cayenne GTS went back 8 times for warranty work. Except for the sound from the Petrol V8 the RLine Touareg is a better car in every way. If you have a close look you will find that quite a number of parts in the sports cars and the vast majority in the SUV have VW and/or Audi or Audi Symbol on them. The SUV have a different skin and interiour but underneath all that they are Audi/VW. Since Porsche dropped the V8 Petrol they are even more identical.
Seems the heart has won and towing got shuffled a long way down the list. I am a huge fan of the PDK and I have only towed light loads with one but I would never recommend one for towing heavy loads. The torque converter rules as it lives up to its name and amplifies the torque. Try slow backing 2.7T up an uphill narrow driveway with a PDK or manual. Yep not as sporty and you can feel a bit disconnected when the TC is not locked up but towing is NOT sporty and likely never will be.
Now for the options list on the GTS ?
The Q7 (which incidentally has won some vehicle of the year award this year) is serving our family well as my daily drive but i get what you're saying about the less-than-exciting drive experience. Perhaps the SQ7 is more suited for that purpose but I'll stick to my GT3 to quench that thirst ;-)
Macan GTS or......Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV, 375kW, 0-100 in 3.9, faster than your GT3! Will be 160k+ and mid 2018 but you wanted sporty.......!
Thanks to best-in-class power-to-weight ratios and perfect 50/50 weight distribution, Alfa Romeo claims its newest model ''is the lightest, most dynamic
mid-size SUV
in the segment.''
I totally hear you. If it weren't for the lousy Audi and VW underpinnings, the Porsche Cayenne would be a great car
. Yes, with platform and model sharing it's confusing even within a brand to know if your car of choice is really what it says on the packet. But the final product must stand up on it's own and the badge owner has to take that responsibility and identical is overdoing it I think.
My heart is making a strong case for it's self but my brain is still in charge, and yes I'm terrified of the options list! What could be more rational than buying something that suits ALL your needs the best, and with the pursuit of having ones cake and eating it? The Macan MUST tow, but it does not have to be the best at it at the expense of all or some other important things, not least of all stupid stuff like is it nice, is it fun, does my wife like it, does it make me happy. As stated before I'm buggered if I'm parting with north of $100k for anything that does not make me excited. Yes a V8 Landcruiser will objectively tow the best but I'd rather hang.
JCG1 towed his 2.4T rig behind his Macan and said it did it with ease. Somewhere recently
@edgy
said he tows his GT3 behind a Macan and no issues. So who else has towed successfully with a Macan to about the 2.1T mark? That's all it comes down to gents, as the argument that 'something else' would be 'better' for towing is irrelevant unless you're playing top trumps. Unless someone can say from first hand experience that the Macan is dangerous or really not suited to towing a 2.1T load on a professionally made trailer with electric brakes and an EBC.
So lets get back to the core question. Occassionally, say 2 - 4 times a month at most, I will be towing a load of up to 2.1T for 1.5 hours on a hwy. At either end of my journey (including all the Victorian race tracks and workshops my cars will go to) there is good access and plenty of flat ground (no narrow, steep drives that must be accessed in reverse). Unless I bin it at the track the trailered cars will be able to move under their own power.
Will the Macan be suitable for this?
Give me another decade of consistent positive reviews on Aflas and I might start trusting them again (with my depreciation).
Anticipating there being no further disquiet on the towing front
let's move forward to options on a GTS. Did I say that out aloud? Chime in with views on the following:
Air suspension and PASM - mentioned a couple of times here that self leveling suspension is a good thing for towing. It says the rear can be lowered down to load height, there are 3 ride height settings, you get PASM (a Porsche orgasm?) with 3 manual damper settings, an extra 10mm of lowering, and an
even sportier
PASM setting! $2,990. Worth it?
Comfort lighting - classy touch or expensive wank at $720?
Seat ventilation - blows hot and cold air on your ass. $1,990 on top of $990 for heat front seats (depressingly, a resale must - wankers, it's Australia FFS not northern Europe) plus you've got to have the more expensive seat option $790. Big $$. So is air on your ass the next level of bliss or an expensive tug, or both?
Lol, well the deal is done. Jan build and March delivery. So they say. I swapped out air sus for sport chrono, and went for the other 2, and that’s not all
. My favourite emoji by far.
Unlike the full back catalogue of amazing 911 colours, there are only 2 to choose from that are any good on the Macan. Both I liked. One my wife liked better. ✅. Done.
No Air Suspension? You will suffer. Ass down nose up when towing. Reduced ability to adapt the ride quality on less than perfect roads. No ability be cruisy on long trips. Air suspension is a perfect match for the multiple roles of an SUV. You may even need to adjust your seat angle to be comfortable wen towing.? Lucky for the rest of us the headlights will at least adjust to the new unnatural pitch. There are a lot of benifits to the multi cavity air suspension and for the price I consider it a no brainer.? but that is just my 1 cents worth.
I see load leveling hitches in your future. Cheaper but a lot more hassle. As nothing says novice more than a car with its but draging on the ground. Or it may just have worms but either way not good.
Just messing with you Chops but hey why not?? after all you are getting a new GTS which is always the sweat spot.
^ ‘sweet spot’. Yeah I swapped out not looking like a noob when towing for launch control. Thing rides like a limo in soft mode and on my lil 20s so I’m not going to lose sleep over that.
Limo! Now thats the problem. Ever wondered why a Leaf sprung Landcruiser makes such a good tow vehicle? Limo or remotly close unloaded means marsh-mellow when loaded which is not good for overall stability. I often have the shocks in sport when towing despite the reduced ride quality as comfort is just dangerious and normal only acceptable on smooth tarmac but it is still no match for my GU Patrol with ARB suspension which doesn't even notice the 2.7 T trailer (except for brakes and acceleration). Ride quality of The GU is certainly not limo more bone shaking but still better than a Landcruiser. SUV are naturally soft in the rear so you end up not having enough weight on the tow ball for acceptable stability or the allowable max towball weight is not enough for good stability.
I know I know just the occasional easy trip.?
I agree never buy any non GT Porsche without Sport Chrono otherwise you only get half a Porsche for 99% of the price.
Do tell. Red I reckon. That was my GTS preference. It also yells GTS because it's unique to that model. Saw a grey GTS the other day, if you can't discern the GTS badge then is it really a GTS?
Thanks Tips. Hope I do. Just drove my outgoing BMW 335i (modified) to work and it's an astonishingly fast car so the Macan has a lot to live up to. This is my Macan. For some reason it doesn't show the roof rails which I think are a visual must, but they're included. It's not your typical blacked out sporty spec in terms of how it looks but I really like it and it reflects the fact my wife will be driving this one too.
My wife didn't mention divorce when I suggested a Macan but she did mention it if it was going to be grey...
I'm having a phone hook up with a supporter of AS a little later on. I'll make my final decision after that. Anyone care to comment on adaptive cruise? Funnily enough it's the same cost as the AS so it seems like a good candidate for a swap rather than adding more cost if I want it.
Yes, my wife has adaptive cruise on her 2016 MB, not sure if the Porsche version is the same but it’s a right royal pain. You set the cruise & your on the freeway when you come up behind another car of course you slow down, by the time you notice the slowdown youve lost momentum & then have to sped up again to go around the car in front. My wife hates it so much she doesn’t use cruise anymore & I refuse to drive the POS. You cant turn the addaptive bit off & if you can I haven’t found it yet.
As Greg says. Only nasty words can desribe it. Makes overtaking a real pain. As well as the slow down and loss of momentum if you want to be a bit closer to the car in front to over take (country road driving) than the minimum distance the cruise is happy with and you need to backoff to wait for a gap it will apply the brakes to get is minimum distance back. And in the city the minimum distance is so long that everybody thinks you are inviting them to take the gap. Fortunately in every car I have had with it you can turn the adaptive bit off.
Only positive is for the sheepal that just want to follow the car in front at a more than safe distance.i
Thanks towing guys! I've amended the order and swapped out the evil adaptive cruise for the amazing and compulsory air suspension. When I placed the order the guy says 'that's a great options list'. When I change my mind he says 'I think that's the right choice'. Seems a day makes all the difference
.
Final options list is
Air sus, sports chrono, keyless entry, 360 camera, sunroof, towbar, roof rails, sideblades red, aluminium ext package, power steer plus, comfort lighting, the 14 way comfort seats in place of the sport ones, seat heating and ventilation (front only), floor mats! and black brushed aluminium interior package. Phew. Don't add the $$ up as it's embarrassing.
My wife’s car has the ADC on it and I can say it has its good points and bad points. Thing is the bad ones are really bad.
The radar has a tendency to pick up car in turn lanes to the left or right of you and jam on the brakes. Right pain in the posterior.
It is great on country roads where the speed limit is constantly changing, that is if they car in front does the correct speeds.
As far as freeway driving, as you come up to a car it will appear in the dash and you change lanes before you get close enough for your car to start slowing.
Would I have it on a car, NO, I think the adaptive part of the cruise control is us, looking for ways get it to work how we want it to.
I know you have your answer but..........farken adaptive cruise. I HATE it. Just give me normal bloody cruise. It's ok on the slowing down bit but when the car in front pulls away, it is soooooo slooooow to pick up speed so you constantly fiddle with it. And every time you turn it on its maximum range which feels like it slows you down 1km behind the car in front. More fiddling to reduce the range effect. Then if you approach a car in the lane to your right that's traveling slightly slower, it slows you down, won't allow "undertaking".
ive also had a few times where turning through a median strip and I pick a gap in the traffic and pin the throttle and the bloody radar bullshit jams on the brakes, bells and rings going nuts, flashing red triangle on the dash. You sit there thinking WTF just happened and then realise the radar thinks it saved you from certain death of driving across in front of a car approaching from 500m away. Bloody scary and dangerous.
I couldn't be more clear, it's bloody rubbish. Autonomous driving, yeah right, if adaptive cruise is any indication, spare me
rant over. Good choice, no adaptive cruise ?
Sounds like I dodged a bullet. I prefer to tailgate (and flash lights) until people clear the right lane so it was never going to suit me, but my wife is happy to go with the flow so she liked the sound of it. But it’s dead and buried now. Just have to tell her I ditched it for a chassis improvement. She’ll love that...
Big fan of adaptive cruise here.............fantastic. I also don't find start/stop an issue - maybe I'm just odd or maybe Mazda is one of the few that has it right.
I should clarify. I like the
concept
of adaptive cruise, fantastic idea do it should be great. But Audis execution (I assume Porsche use the same tech under the VW umbrella) is terrible. Sounds like Mazda got it right.
stop start annoys me too, again Audi calibration is shit, it shuts off before you've come to a full stop and the diesel can be a bit hesitant when it fires back up. But put the auto in sport as I do every drive and it overrides (as does dash button) so it's really a non issue.
I'm with you Hugh, deployed without laziness it's amazing. Simply use the brake pedal to disengage it appropriately, stay 'involved' and it adds another dimension. It's not set and forget. If you really want fully auto cruise control QF offer it.
Shit! Maybe the bullet was a good thing
.
I must admit I used it once on a Benz C63 the dealer was silly enough to loan me over the weekend (they do good burnouts
) and thought it was good. I was on the south eastern coming into town after work and it was medium flowing traffic with nowhere to go as all lanes were occupied as far as you could see. But, I’d imagine country driving with less trafficked roads some of the annoyances mentioned above may come into play. I’ll never know as the deed is done. If you ever meet my wife, remember not only is ACC annoying, poorly conceived and executed but also dangerous! Additionally AS is a crucial for safety and comfort and let’s not forget resale...
If that’s your car , you are going to regret ordering a left hand drive.should have got the right hand drive model. Makes it so much easier day to day .
I've got mine down in Victoria at the moment and have had a blast up some of the mountains down here. It's a fantastic bit of kit, I'm thinking I'll probably take it on the Targa Tour next year to see how it goes in all honesty.
I got this today. I suspect it too might meet my towing needs
.
Toe in at the rear for stability. Not joking, it’s got a stability management program as they’re near impossible to keep straight.
Boys vs beast
Wheelie bar. You can pop the front up at almost any speed on any terrain.
@Skidmarks
at 1/8 scale this is some serious rubber.
You will not regret adding the AS, I use the variable ride height to tweak the ramp approach angle when loading the trailer... putting the cars suspension in “off-road mode” raises the car significantly and eases up the trailer ramp approach angle quite a lot.
Aside from that, it rides well when loaded and self levels as you’re now well aware...
Good option list, sport chrono is the only one that I personally wouldn’t bother with... I have it in a GT3 and don’t use it, so cannot for the life of me see why I’d have it in the family bus.
Do you have a Porsche code?
yes the $$$ ads up, I was stressed out until I to delivery... now I don’t think about it! it’s everything we could ever want.
Just thought I'd put some notes in here for the punters and my recent experience, I just got my new Nevco trailer last week, when hooking the new trailer up, my lights were not working. We initially thought this was that the car wasn't compatible for the LED lights on the trailer (I'd only towed trailers with incandescent before) they suggested I may need a resistor block to make it work.
Long story short, the next day I called my contact in service and he got me in that day, it turns out the module was faulty, these cars are fine to go both ways (unlike some) they replaced it same day and got me back on the road for my weekend road trip to Melbourne, so kudos to PCSS for the prompt fix.
I went mad the night before googling it, it was an issue on earlier 92a Cayennes but not for us, if you have this issue, this is what you need to look at first! I have the factory fitted bar (fitted from 2016+) for what its worth.
Oh and the new trailer gets me between 16.5 - 17.0 L per 100km, the old ones I used to rent were getting me about 20L / 100km. Can't recommend the guys at Nevco enough if you're in the market for a trailer.
