Suggestion
DAB (AVH3600DAB I think) which I could have used to replace the CDR30 but I was advised by a fitter that this was problematic because the cdr30 "is optical" and would therefore need a conversion kit to allow use of the other (non optical I guess) unit.

Dear Chaps (and chapesses! ) I took delivery of my 2010 2.9 Boxster last week and I'm loving it. One tiny fly in the ointment is the installed CDR30 (with Bluetooth). The sound quality of the unit is awesome (compared to the unit I had in the Lotus Elise I used to drive), but I'm having to plug in my phone via aux cable to get sound from the phone through the head unit. This is problematical when I need to change tracks etc because it's all done from the phone. My son had a pioneer DAB (AVH3600DAB I think) which I could have used to replace the CDR30 but I was advised by a fitter that this was problematic because the cdr30 "is optical" and would therefore need a conversion kit to allow use of the other (non optical I guess) unit. I can fit a basic car stereo, headunit, wiring harness jobs a goodun but these guys want £450 to do the optical conversion + £150 to fit the unit I already own oh and + £45 for a cover to make it look all porschey... so £600 to fit a £300 head unit. Can anyone tell me a better way? Is there a different optical head unit I can use / have fitted? Paul.

I'm not an expert but I though the real difference was analog vs. digital and it was only the Bose option (which I have) that made a head unit swap impractical because of its digital signal. You can do it but it requires running all new wiring which get expensive. I think there are other threads here that have done a simple head unit swap of CDR

I have no desire for NAV, Bluetooth, HD radio, touchscreen, etc. The functionality of the CDR-30 is perfect with mp3 cd's, I just want it to accept a USB or SD card. Bottom line: for USB conectivity on CDR-30 , you need to replace CDR-30 ? I assume there isn't another optical head unit available.
