I just bought a Boxster (2011) that had 90% of what I was looking for. One of the items that I was wondering if I could swap out is the HVAC controls.
I have the one with fan and temperature control
I would like to upgrade it to the one with selectable temperature
I was looking at
Porsche OEM Parts - Genuine Factory Parts Accessories - Wholesale
and found one listed as
DASH CONTROL UNIT Boxster; Auto Control; w/Seat Heater; w/Ventilated Seats
Does anyone know if I can put out the existing unit and push in the upgraded one?
Basically, is wiring harness and the sensors the same for both units, and the intelligence for the 'auto control' (selecting 72F) built into the module that I am changing, or is there more to it, such as programing, and the addition of temperature sensors? (I know the seat venting will not work as I assume the seats do not all ship with fans).
Thank you in advance.
Dropped by the Tyson Corner (VA) Porsche dealer's part department, and they claim it can not be done
I am not confident with the answer because it was not "you can not because ....." just no.
I will keep looking.
Did you search here? Seems like this question comes-up about once/year. And I think (not sure) that someone bought one off ebay and got it to work. Or that could just be the booze....
I did a few searches using different terms and find the issue with paint coming off of the controls but nothing on switching them.
I found a shop guide that seems to indicate that the plugs at the back are the same on both units. The issue as I see it is the temperature probe in the unit, or is it elsewhere, and if elsewhere, is it installed by default.
Try "climate". I took a quick look and saw lots of "No Way"'s
Thank you for the tip to change the search
"
According to the Porsche Service Information book (PNA 981 BOX 13), there is a significant difference in the behind-the-dash hardware when dual zone
climate
control is installed."
this might be just dual as
"
If you check the Porsche Service Information book (oops, there, I did it again), you'll find that there's no clutch on the 981 AC compressor -- so there's really no "cycling." The compressor uses a variable-pitch swash plate to adjust its output, but the compressor shaft is always turning when the engine is running -- whether the AC is on or not. Variable AC loads are addressed by changing the angle of the swash plate."
and
"......
He said that they may have a solution that they want to try out; it consists of adding a sensor and reprogramming the system to implement single-zone ACC. Apparently, it could be done on the 987."
Then the final nail in the coffin -

"
Well, the dealer ordered the automatic unit for me and they installed it and tried to get it to work for about 2 hours. 3 hardware codes came up that they couldn't resolve. After a phonecall to Porsche (why they didn't do this first?),
they determined that it cannot be done without changing the wiring harness and other parts of the
climate
control system. "
so that is that.
I tried on my 987CS & it could not be done.
