Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

It would be my opinion (and I could be completely wrong and totally off base...adequate disclaimer?) that the problem is not hardware but the software provider, Navtech, or more specifically the data that Navtech uses (or doesn't use)....They supply the discs for the system on my E55 Command Syst as well.....I have a shelf full of CDs (as they are, of course, not compatable).

In the meantime, it's my advice to any Porsche buyer who intends to use the system outside of the largest cities not to spend their money on this system.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently got my tt with nav system. I'm surprised to find how little info it contains outside of the largest metropolitan areas. I live in Indiana, about 50 miles from downtown Chicago in an area which is definitely not country and find large seas of green on the maps with no street markings whatsoever. Friends with similar systems in a Lexus and Lincoln have far superior utility. Am I the only dissapointed customer? I love the car, just can't understand selling such an undeveloped accessory. AS

POST 2Original post

I've had the same experience. There is not even a CD for Canada yet. I wrote NavTech, the company who makes the CDs for the nav system, about this. This is thier response: "We are continuously expanding and updating our coverage areas, but this is a manual and time consuming process. Please keep in mind that we are not only using existing maps and digitizing them but we are manually driving these streets and recording up to 150 different kinds of attributes that can be found at the street level. We are in the midst of an aggressive campaign to have full coverage around the 3rd quarter of 2002."

POST 3Original post

Yes,I can't find my street that has been around for 40 plus years. Berkley '00 Millennium C4

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I called Navtec as well. They say they are now buying additional data to expand their data base, as opposed to doing all their own over-the -road verification (how nuts was that?) I spoke to a supervisor in customer service (Peggy) who added a troubling bit of news. She said that even after they expand their data base, there is no assurance Porsche will buy it for its customers. She said they also supply Lexus, but the Lexus disc won't run in a Porsche. But, I think that they don't supply Lexus since I sampled a 2000 Nav system in an LX 470 that was far superior to my 2002 Porsche... unless Porsche didn't buy their available data base. I find this situation annoying. The Porsche system costs as much or more than other systems, it's just inferior. AS

POST 5Original post

Well I don't have the Porsche one but I do have the Lincoln one in our Navigator and it is missing LOTS of streets and actually has a few highways near my house wrong! I find myself driving in large blank areas frequently!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Drannon, I also checked out the Lincoln system. It's still superior since it contains data on streets not diagrammed and can lead you to the address. The Lincoln does have my home town, while Porsche doesn't. The Porsche won't find a street not pictured, so the green areas are a true blank. The Lincoln does have some info about those areas. Aren't these failures worthy of formal complaint. The cheapest Delorme disc for you home computer costs less tha $30 and has nearly everything, with far fewer errors. AS

POST 7Original post

It would be my opinion (and I could be completely wrong and totally off base...adequate disclaimer?) that the problem is not hardware but the software provider, Navtech, or more specifically the data that Navtech uses (or doesn't use)....They supply the discs for the system on my E55 Command Syst as well.....I have a shelf full of CDs (as they are, of course, not compatable). Very poor coverage on both. So, are they actually tyhe "leader" in this market?? Wouldn't ya think the boys at Rand McNally would have found this to be somthing they could take a crack at? GreggT

POST 8Original post

I have the nav in an 01 RX300 and I find it to be so unreliable it is basically useless. Mostly firmware problems. I would not advise anyone to buy a Nav that is a part of any car.

POST 9Original post

FWIW, nav system in 01 E430 Benz is pretty good once you figure out controls. Wife uses it all the time. Very detailed for Cape Cod/Boston area

POST 10Original post

I had one in my C4 cab. Every time I needed it ithe navsys could not find the street. Mainly because the streets here in Fl are numbers and the addresses are names or it could not find the address at all. I finally ended up sitting in front of the computer and got the infos from street atlas. Now in my TT there is no NavSys. And I am glad, saves me some weight. cu styx

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I received a letter from a customer service person at Porsche North America in response to my letter to the president. I'm informed that he's looking into the situation with Navtec and will get back to me with more information. In the meantime, it's my advice to any Porsche buyer who intends to use the system outside of the largest cities not to spend their money on this system. I also feel that Porsche owes current owners a significant and immediate free upgrade. Other car companies have the ability, why not Porsche? AS
