I do get bored quite quickly but I just chop and change my daily cars when that happens, as 911 searches are usually long and labourious tasks.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I guess this question is inspired by a few recent threads about folks buying their cars.
Often, these posts are by first time buyers of the marque, which is great.
So, I just wondered, how long do people hang on to their purchases and which variant gets kept for the longest?
I'm on my second Porsche, which I have owned for 7 years and its a 996 Turbo.
Interested to hear your experiencess.
I am dreadful at keeping cars. Keep changing them. I bought my first Porsche in 1993 (944 Turbo) and just bought my tenth two weeks ago (early 911) but none of them lasted more than 18 months!
I'm into my 5th year of 996 Turbo ownership.
I had a bit of a wobble a few months back, looked at chopping it in for a C63, something that could replce my C-Class and the Turbo. I was after the best of both worlds. But then had the Turbo serviced and fell in love all over again.
Started out with a Boxster S, had that 18 month. Then a Carrera, had that 4 years. Now the Turbo.

997 turbo baby 11 months!!!! Going in for warranty renewal in a few weeks!!!!
Have owned 911s for 10 years or so.
1st - A horrible bitsa (in hindsight) was owned for 2 years.
2nd - 964 C2 (lovely) owned for a year or so.
3rd - 964 Turbo (I loved this car and shouldn't have sold it) 5+ years.
4th - Mk1 996 GT3 CS. Almost 2 years. Love it!
I do get bored quite quickly but I just chop and change my daily cars when that happens, as 911 searches are usually long and labourious tasks. By using the 911 for summer weekends etc, it keeps it feeling special.
There's always something else I'd like to try but there comes a point where you think "I can't get anything anymore special than what I have for the same price and I don't want anymore cash tied up in something that spends a lot of its time sitting in the garage." That's where I'm at now, so the GT3 is a keeper.
6 Porsches
3.2 Carrera - 2.5 yrs
993 - 3 yrs
944S2 - owned for 6 mths whilst I still had 993
3.2 Carrera - again - 2 yrs
928 S4 - 5 mths
996 C2 - current and owned for 1 yr
interestingly, I made money on all but one of the above come resale - and that was before the explosion of air cooled values. So, can't grumble.
5 days! Just got a 996TT having been trying to decide on which Porsche for a few months now. It's my second having had a 964 turbo bodied cabriolet for a couple of years, been without Porsche for a few years and decided it was time to come back!
On my 2nd Porsche.
First - 996 Carrera 2 from June 2006 to January 2011
Second - 996 Turbo from January 2011 to date
Both aweseome cars and no plans to sell current one!

Had my 996 C4S for coming on 7 years- agree with IKnowJoseph- not worth selling for a long time to come
I have kept mine for 3 years before changing. 3 years is just up on the 911 and I've got the itch for a change. However my daughter loves it and wants me to keep it.
So keep it I shall - and so likely to be a long term keeper now. Manipulated by a 2 year old!
Can't grumble, it's a really nice family car for days out. Lovely.
Will save for another car to add to the collection in a couple of years instead.
First 996T owned for 10 months.
Can't see me getting rid anytime seeing as i've spent a fair bit getting it how i want. With 700hp I can't see me wanting to go faster and it does it so well.
next step is a GT2 kit but that will have to wait while i fix up the westy!
1991 - 3.3 964 Turbo - Owned for about 18 months was daily driver - sold to Crimpalength
1994 - 3.6 964 Turbo 1 of 42 RHD - Midnight Blue - Kept for pretty much exactly 1 year - always regretted selling it
2008 - 997 GT2 - 1 of around 60 in UK, kept it for 18 Months so far, what can you say, keeping this one learned my lesson last time, it might be worth something in the future too? who knows but love driving it!

996 C4S daily drive for 18 months in 2009 or so, 993 daily drive for approaching that duration right now.
I always keep half an eye out for GT2s and 3s for the weekend car, but truth be told they're not pretty enough for me for the money when you can pick up ferraris/lambos with all the performance you need for similar cash, so for the moment my weekend car is staying Italian. The only Porsche I *really really* desire is a 964RS, but unless my mate (he's had it since the mid 90s) bequeaths his to me then has tragic accident (not in the car
), it's not gonna happen!

A rather nice resumé you have there! So how many cars do you have at any one time??
Pork wise;
996 c4s - 4 years(miss the noise and interior but became dated IMO)
997 c4s - 6 months (non emotive experience)
Cayenne S - 1 year(most reliable)
Lost loads on all not sure what next pork will be, still unsure on the direction the marque is taking but do miss the meets etc..

3.2 Guards Red Targa for 3 years. Loved it.
Black Boxster S for 2 years. Really liked it.
Midnight Blue 993 C2. 2 years in and still very much in love. No plans to sell anytime soon.

996 C4S for 9 years...after all the brilliant trackday/euro trip memories it's given me, I could never sell!
My first 996 bought from Strasse I had for 2 years and did 80,000 miles in it -great car - until it was written off :-(
80,000 miles over 2 years only thing that needed fixing was the air con.
3.2 manual (g50) 3 years x 31k
996 3.4 ( manual) 10 years x 63k
997 3.6 gen 2 ( manual) 1 years x 10k
Driven well over 100k in 911's during the last 15 years and loved it. My firsts thoughts are they are still very much a drivers car ...but who knows ...anyone who can afford it these days can drive one of these cars . Drive one all year round ( I.e. Scottish winters) and see how the throttle peddle effects the cars attitude . Driving in a straight line in snow with + or -15 degrees of lock dependant on throttle position is educational ( but can ? be fun ) to say the least. No doubt newer cars are losing driver appeal , faster for sure , but not so sure if as involving. I suspect my present car may be my newest ever Porsche I've owned and future purchases may be older models. This may just be an age thing and who knows my next " take it for the day and enjoy it " offer from my local Edinburgh OPC offer will be very ,very difficult to resist!!!!!!!!!!!!
My one and only Porsche, 2002 996C4S, 18 months and counting. This will be buried with me.I don't like turbo engines, the GT3 doesn't press my buttons and I cannot afford the air cooled RS stuff and the newer cars aren't analogue enough. Interesting that the 996C4S owners keep them for a long time, I can understand why.

It's funny because I sold my Maser 4200 and bought a C4S back in 2008 or so because I wanted something a bit more sporty rather than GT. I then sold the 6C4S after a year because it was too good a GT/all rounder! it just wasn't exciting enough. Fast forward a few years and I find my current 993 does an admirable job of sports car and every day car without being too good at the latter such that it becomes dull.
The 6C4S as a proposition for a useable performance car of around £20k is fantastic and looks the dogs danglies in my opinion. My only "complaints" are that it could stand to lose a bit of weight and/or gain 10-15% more useable power. A C4S with a 3.9 conversion from autofarm would be quite special I imagine.
A 3.9 conversion, that sounds interesting. When it blows up, I'll have a look at that. I feel it has enough power and I'm happy with the weight, it was a GT car I was after. It covers all bases for me. I don't need more sporty, I have bikes for that sort of thing, I cannot think of any other car that'd do what my 4S does for me.
Callughan said:
Why so many 64S?
The Cabs were both new and the OPC damaged my first one and tried to get away without telling me. I found out and they had to replace it.
997 C2 had it for 4 years , sold it three weeks ago and currently going through sellers remorse.
Might replace it with a 991S , haven't made my mind up yet.
I've had my 993 over 5 years now. The longest i've kept any car by a long long way. At the mo I am doing a round of upgrades that will cost more that what she originally cost me back in 2009. And then there's all the money i've spent upgrading her already. Till death do us part etc..
The GT3 I have had just 16 months but clocked up 10,000 miles in that time. It will be following the same path as the 93.

Just finished a very rewarding 8 year, 43000 mile relationship with a Cayman S, which I owned from new.
Aside from tyres and brakes all I had to replace was a Lambda sensor, a coolant sensor and a pair of lower control arms.
Four Porsches
986 Boxster 2.5 (2 years)
987 Boxster 3.2 (2 years)
997 Carrera S cab (11 months)
997 Turbo (15 months so far) well never sell! possibly last Porsche unless I buy aBoxster for my daily!
+3 for Classic Line and I've used plenty of insurance companies over the years.
Best part for me is for £20 charge I have the car insured at a no quibble guaranteed value should the worst happen.
Owned my 987.2 Spyder since new making it the longest I've owned a Porsche in 28 years of owning various model.
Registered on the 16/04/2010, I doubt I will ever sell and even the wife says it is here to stay. Love it for its uniqueness and rarity, it makes every drive special and a pleasure. It's a garage queen coming out on dry days, but this only makes me appreciate it more. Of all the cars I've owned including a few Caterhams, it's the one that draws the most attention from people who are car fans or not.
My daily driver a 997.2 C2 owned for 15 months, lives outside and is used in all weathers. Does the job well that I ask of it, but feels so much detached to the Spyder in that one feels a proper sports car and the other a GT. If I can justify the cost in changing and the forthcoming GT4 is as special as it is rumoured to be and not just a free for all parts bin special, then the 997 will be moved on.

Wobbling too!
2003 996 Turbo manual in Lapis blue with full PSH that I've had 4 wonderful years with but will let it go for the right price in order to scratch the Italian itch. Will put up for sale in the next few weeks...
Owned my RS60 Spyder for over 5 years and 57k miles. In this time I have had no issues whatsoever. Not one
Because I have severe OCD the car has full Paintshield and is kept in as new condition with parts swapped out for new ones regularly. So it looks like a concours car, but gets driven and enjoyed properly
Every drive is as great as the first one, and as Clarkson said in his review "It feels Italian".
This is a very special car and the best thing I have ever bought.
Just over 3 years with my 2002 996 Targa...weekend car only but enjoy every opportunity I get to drive it. Will get another 911, probably 997 at some point as I have the 911 fever..
Owned my Boxster 987 nearly 2 years. In that time amongst other trips I've taken it to the Le Mans classic. Have loved every moment of owning it. Currently it is tucked away safely in the garage!
3 years to change for me, except my current 997. Had 3.5 years and it's future is hanging in the balance between immediate sale or keep it for life. Can't decide, been dithering for 6 months...
987 Boxter S (new) 2 years
997.1 Carrera S Coupe 2 years
997.1 Carrera 4 S Coupe 18 month
997.1 Turbo Coupe 18 months
997.1 Turbo Cab 1 Year
997.2 GTS 3 months (current)
All cars were manuals
All cars have been great and reliable but always searching for the keeper. If I have the GTS in 2 years time, it could be the one
Currently Porscheless, but have had most models over the years.
Best was my first (aren't they always) - a G50 3.2 sports coupe back in the eighties. I recently bought another and it only lasted a few months as it didn't rekindle the feelings I thought it would.
Most expensive was my 996 GT3 (I tracked it so spent a lot on upgrades), closely followed by my 1970 2.2s (but it's costly keeping an old car perfect).
Best to live with - my wife's 997 C4s (which she still has).
Over two years for the 996T. It's absolutely killing me because due to various life changes i've had it sat in a carcoon for almost 12 months. Once i've bought my new place and settled in i'll be getting her back on the road...cannot wait
My first Porsche was a 986 Boxster S which I had for just under 3 years before swapping it for a 996 C4S which I've now had for 4 years. Then 3 months ago I bought a 997.1 Turbo which I intend to keep indefinitely.
The C4S is probably going up for sale shortly though, as multiple Porsche ownership is not high on my wife's list of priorities and I'm not sure she's likely to forget that I've still got it...
Made me count back but I've had my 930 for 22 years now, almost family heirloom territory!
My 993, I've had for 18 years, since new in fact.
Need to get one of these new fangled water cooled ones again at some point
I'll have had my 987.2 CS for 4 months in a week or so, and I can't believe how much I've fell in love with it.
I struggle to put into words the enjoyment this car gives me, its intoxicating.
Gelling with a car is something I struggle with and I have a habit of selling cars within weeks of buying them, but I can already say for a fact that I will be very very sad when the day finally comes and it leaves me.
In the mean time I continue to buzz with excitement with all the happy memories that it'll continue to bring.
Met a bloke in a fuel station back in the summer in a 3.2 Coupe, I got talking to him & he said he'd owned it since new & still loved it and never let anybody else drive it, not even his wife! Claimed he wasn't aware of their current values, I did say it was probably worth almost what he paid for it back in the late 80's.
Sounds like my kind of bloke
Had my 996 GT3 a year this week,
Previously 996 Carrera C2 owned for 6 months, 944 owned for 1 year, 3.2 Carrera sport owned for 3 years.
