I recently installed a Avic F900BT in my car (and really like it). It allows you to get down to the CE kernel/OS if you have the appropriate boot files on the face-mounted SD flash drive slot.
I had this idea - and was wondering if anybody knows much about it and/or has seen it (yes I did some searching on google and avic411).
I was thinking of creating a CE application (or using an existing one) that could read OBDII port information and collect statistics about the vehicle day-to-day. Storing that information either back onto the SD or usb drives (it has both).
Or better yet, wonder if the article talking about the porsche carputer could use the avic for it's input/outputs w/ the touchscreen (really part I would wonder about is touchscreen/etc since the video signal shouldn't be a problem w/ the rca connections.
(stole the idea from the "Porscheputer" article/etc and though why not use th CE windows that is running on the AVIC for the display/etc.)

Crazy idea? What are peoples thoughts?
Thanks
Ben
Hve you looked at the iphone app Rev Lite..Uses OBD Reader with Wi-Fi to read information and show information you are looking for. Now sure how good it really is...
no I haven't, but will look into that as an option.
Is the thought that the F900BT (with it's iphone integration) could run the iPhone apps - which than could monitor the car's stats.
I don't have a iPhone, but assume it would work w/ a iPod touch (which I could buy)
Thanks,
Ben
I wrote a simple java app to pull OBD2 stats a while back. I didn't do much with it, but its all pretty simple. If you can interface with a serial port or bluetooth over the serial port you will be set. You can send simple serial commands to get most of the detail that you might want. I'm not a m$/ce person, but I think it would be cool to do. It would be even more interesting if you can in integrate/log the data against GPS (Assuming that AVIC has one)
Yeah, that's what I'm starting to think that I'll need to do - all the carputer software seems to be for base OS systems and XP embedded.
Thanks for the info - any good sites on the protocol to interact w/ the ODB systems?
thanks,
Ben
I use the obd2 reader from
ElmScan 5 - Scan Tools - ScanTool.net
. It provides an elm327 which has pretty open specifications to use. All of the commands are readily available to to control it. That company sells a bluetooth and usb version, but only the serial one existed when I bought it.
I can share some of the pdfs that I gathered to build what I did, but it is really as simple as sending a hex command and reading in a loop.
