The kit was installed for about 2 minutes before I figured out that it was for a 99-2001, not a 2002.

I was mistaken, there is no oem short shifter.I spoke to the dealer and they installed a B&M short shifter on the TT I saw on Sat.

I have the B&M shifter installed now and I like it, very tight.

I'm going to test drive it some more before the console goes back on and I might drive by the dealer to have them check my cable lengh adjustment first.

There's other ones like techart/ruf that is installed on the tranny which is less invasive then the B&M which you have to work inside the cabin and remove the center console and all but costs more.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The factory short throw shifter on an '01 TT I tried yesterday seemed like a big improvement over the stock one in my 02 C4S. Has anyone had experience replacing the stock shifter with either a factory or replacement (B+M or other) shifter? Seems like a simple way to improve the shifting process because it's more positive and quicker.
This topic is well covered.

Thanks for the help. In the future I'll search the posts first. The B&M seems like the best choice. My only question is how much an oem short shifter costs with installation and if it is better/different from the B&M. Also, the larger shift **** that I saw on the TT, which was aluminum and leather with the P-crest is a better piece than the stock one on my 02 C4S.

Did someone tell you of an OEM short shifter? To my knowledge, none is available but you may be experiencing some differences between different 996 models.
The B&M is a very popular short shift mod which I had done and it's great-short and precise(stock ones the throw is too long and I misshifted alot). There's other ones like techart/ruf that is installed on the tranny which is less invasive then the B&M which you have to work inside the cabin and remove the center console and all but costs more. In terms of shifter ***** you can order via dealer or Porsche parts distributor thru the techquipment catalog which I ordered the carbon fiber shifter with aluminum boot.
I just checked the B&M web site. The short shifters they have listed are for 996's up to 2000. Reading the previous posts, I agree that B&M seems to be the way to go. Anybody have experience with 2001-2002 MY's, paricularly the C4S?
You might want to check the TechArt short shift kit which is properly engineered and does not require any shaft modifications. This item is well engineered and does not make the shifter mor notchy or hard to operate. There is a post about this item here:
<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000240&p=" target="_blank">TechArt short shift kit</a>
BTW, TechArt is also a Rennlist sponsor.
I installed the B&M on MY2001 c2. It was definately a shorter throw... However, increased effort and notchiness made me take it out and try the EVOMS kit.
The EVOMS shift kit doesn't feel much shorter than stock. However, when adjusting the shifter placement, in reference to the console, it moves the stick over to the passenger side. When trying to adjust the stick back towards the center of the console... the heim joint at the end of the stick hits the black shifter assembly uprights (plastic).
I called EVOMS about it and they said... They have had that happen on a few cars. He went further to say, if it bothered me that much; try and shave the inside black plastic upright that it is hitting (with dremel).
So, I will be removing this one soon as well. I have heard talk on this board on the RUF and Tech Art units. Anybody have experience with the RUF short shifter???

According to B&M the short shifter works on the C4 and all 996's, at least through 2001. I'm stalled on my install, because the shifter **** does not a visable set screw as descibed. I requested help on other rennlist short shift post and if I do not get a response tonight the car goes back together without the upgrade.

I'm going to test drive it some more before the console goes back on and I might drive by the dealer to have them check my cable lengh adjustment first. Not a bad installation, B&M could have given a little more detail on removing the shift **** (pull hard), a little more on removing the cable clips and a lesson on cable lenght adjustment. They do not talk about the allen bolt and the tightning nut that tightens the play at the bushings(they will get a call on Monday). Also it is a little scarry on cutting the old bushings to get the old shifter lever out. Once you cut the bushing clips you will spend $135.00 to go back to the OEM setup, since Porsche does not sell the bushing clips seperate.
I would say that the install was a success.

I was mistaken, there is no oem short shifter.I spoke to the dealer and they installed a B&M short shifter on the TT I saw on Sat. That confirms my decision to go with the B&M.
If you decide to remove the B&M shifter; Get the Needle bearing bushings from EVOMS for the same price (instead of ordering the factory plastic pieces, IMHO). I actually used those bushings with my B&M kit; That was before I took it out.
Good Luck

$300 for the kit. 1/2 price.
