Hi, I just bought my Cayman S (2007) and badly need bluetooth (and iPod) connectivity as I am in California. I've searched the archives, and was wondering if anyone has a solution that uses the stock microphones I see on my steering column. 50/50 chance I will go the Dension route but that seems to require an extra microphone.
Thanks in advance.
So wait, *because you are in California* you need bluetooth and ipod connectivity?
People in other US states (and countries internationally) just *want* bluetooth or ipod connectivity, but wow, I never knew it was so different in California.
I assume there is some kind of law in California requiring it? Or do people's jobs in California just depend heavily on bluetooth, far more so than everywhere else?
Very curious to find out, please let me know.
There's a law against using a hand-held cell phone handset while driving.

Exactly, we have a law that requires hands free. I can't hear people talk to well with my bluetooth headset in the CS, and spend 2.5 hours a day commuting, so I NEED something that works, and that I don't have to worry about charging. I've never been a fan of wired headsets so those are out.
As for the iPod, studying for the July CA Bar and have the Bar/Bri iPod lectures. So, I need something ASAP that can play the lectures when I'm not on a call. Tried a FM modulator from Target, missed like every 200th word. Hence why I need that also.
Wow, I read my post and I sound like an a-hole
Anyway I did not know they had laws like that, so drive safe! I would say avoid calls while driving altogether.
Kor,
Have you been to Montreal lately?
A lot of areas are going that way. If you see the antics on the roads around here I can't but think that it's nothing but a good thing. The ones that hold the handset with one hand and talk with the other are real classics. Guess they steer with their knees.
Only thing I haven't understood is the studies that claim hands free is no better when driving than the handset.
I've also wondered if anyone uses the stock mikes. One would like to think Porsche chose a good location. Is this not true or is it just that hard to connect in?
I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the Dension unit soon. I did see the Mic lines on the PCM 2.1 pin-out so it may be an option to try tapping them. I just haven't seen a guide here or on google with someone doing that.
Don't have anything to add regarding an handsfree--just wanted to wish you goo dluck on the bar exam. 10 years and my dad's still surprised I can pass a bar (that's just one of many lawyer jokes!). By the way, that CA law doesn't seem to be enforced much--tons of people were driving while yapping on the phone last week in Santa Monica.
Just as an update on this, I've been working tons so I had the GW 500 and BTA 1500 installed by a local shop that the dealership thought highly of. I asked if the stock microphones could be used, the answer I got is that they could, but the sound quality is "terrible" and it costs more to tap them. I ended up going the ugly external microphone route.
