Just read an article on the skyline gtr which they changed the gear ratio for quicker acceleration but at expense of top end speed.

When I get there this Friday I have to talk to other one's involved with the gear ratio change(Mark/Kenneth) so I'll update as well on that and whether it's worth to do it.
Leading evidence: 'Replace gear ratio' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (mark/kenneth) so i'll update as well' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I talked with Tony of TRG(Sear's Point) and from what he has said that it is posssible to change the gear ratios on the 996 and he remarked TRG has done a few before.
I my case, I did nothing spectacular, just changed the gear ratios from the higher Swiss/US to the Rest of the World ratios, which was how Ferdinand Porsche intended them to be (higher ratios were introduced in the Swiss/US markets to meet "noise" regulations and "fuel consumption".

Gear ratios are changed whenever a racing team competes on a particular circuit...

Well anyway I plan to go there this Friday to have a toggle switch installed on my Unichip to change between 91 or 100 octane.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.
Replace (mark/kenneth) so i'll update as well

If all you can reach on the longest straight is 150 with OE gearing, then you don't need (can't reach) publicised top speed anyway, and might as well change gearing to get to the top speed you can reach sooner.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone done this and what companies are offering this if any? Just read an article on the skyline gtr which they changed the gear ratio for quicker acceleration but at expense of top end speed. I doubt if I'll ever go 150+ on a track so any info would be appreciated. Regards. Mike
Mike,
Sounds more practical then messing with the engine. Kinda like the M3 racing car. They dont have much top end since not too many tracks require 150+.
Good luck and try to get the times after you finish the project.
It sounds like what they might have done on the Skyline is change only the pinion gear. That would be cheaper and easier than replacing the whole gear set. It would lower all the gear ratios somewhat and reduce top speed. If all you can reach on the longest straight is 150 with OE gearing, then you don't need (can't reach) publicised top speed anyway, and might as well change gearing to get to the top speed you can reach sooner. But think about this a minute. If you can reach only 150 on the longest straight you drive, you really don't want the gear change to restrict you to 150. You'll reach that speed quicker, but what do you do for the rest of the way to the first corner, just hold that speed? I think one might want to change to a pinion that would give about a 155 or 160 top speed. There's probably some formula by which to compute this, but I don't know where.

Bureaucrats strike again... <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> )
The result of the change was subjectively like an increase in 10-15% more hp in respect to acceleration...
Guys,
Just changing the ring and pinion won't solve the main problem with these cars (996 and 993). The gaps between the gears will stay the same even if you lower your final drive ratio. You will end up with a first gear that is almost useless.
A better way is to set up a gear set that gives you close ratios so the rpms don't drop as much and still have a taller 6th gear for cruising, if you still are worried about that.

Thanks for all and future responses. I talked with Tony of TRG(Sear's Point) and from what he has said that it is posssible to change the gear ratios on the 996 and he remarked TRG has done a few before. Well anyway I plan to go there this Friday to have a toggle switch installed on my Unichip to change between 91 or 100 octane. The reason for it is I plan to track the car and Tony claims you may add 8-14 hp more but will see anyway. I'm also will have it dyno'd for hp/trq so I'll post updates on that. When I get there this Friday I have to talk to other one's involved with the gear ratio change(Mark/Kenneth) so I'll update as well on that and whether it's worth to do it. Regards. Mike
Mike,
TRG doesn't do their own gearboxes. They send them to one of two guys. Their race boxes go to my mechanic and he does some of their street boxes also. The other guy they sent a 996 TT box to made several mistakes and my mechanic had to help him over the phone to correct the problem. If you do have TRG do the box make sure they send it to BMC&G. If you want the number of my mechanic just email me off list.
