Suspected cause
Since it was an older model, I don't think it was a factory paint job, probably a wrap.
Leading evidence: 'wrap' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'wrap' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean their car more often' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I can never stress it enough to customers that they should actually clean their car more often with a wrap than they did without the wrap.

Suggestion
Also consider how they handle aftercare as no matter what wrap is applied or by who sometimes there can be peeling usually within the first few weeks so you need someone who understands this and will happily replace anything that does happen.

and have been loving every bit of it since I got it last week.Although Im very happy with it, I have to admit Im not crazy about the Artic Silver exterior so Im contemplating doing a full wrap using a color that would make it pop and make a good contrast with the tan interior.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As some of you may know I recently got my first
Porsche
, an
06 Cayman S
and have been loving every bit of it since I got it last week.Although Im very happy with it, I have to admit Im not crazy about the Artic Silver exterior so Im contemplating doing a full wrap using a color that would make it pop and make a good contrast with the tan interior. So far Im leaning towards the Sapphire Blue that looks amazing on the
981
's, specially with black accents like side mirrors, vents and rims. The wrap should also protect the original paint, so thats an added bonus.
So, has anyone here done it to their 987?Would be nice to know how it turned out.
Lots of times!

Like anything, it probably depends a great deal on the ability of the person doing the work.
There was a
Cayman
that showed up to a local DE that was wrapped in Gulf livery. It was a 10 footer - looked good from a distance but up close not so much. Lots of seams and rough edges. If I was going to pay that kind of money for the process, I would be disappointed with that result.
Might want to look over the results of your wrapper and gauge his / her ability. Porsches have LOTS of contours and can't be easy to wrap.
That looks great Kyle.If I do decide to go this route Ill have to find a person as skilled/qualified as you.It would be a shame to spend a few grand on a wrap for it to look sub-par.
Is the black line around the
headlights
part of the wrap? It looks so much better in black.
Thanks! You are right. Anyone can buy vinyl, so you need to do your research on local companies before deciding on one. There is usually a reason some are cheap and some are expensive.
Yes the black headlight rings are part of the wrap, and are available as a DIY kit on
San Diego Car Wraps - Porsche Stripes - Lamborghini Stripes - Ferrari Stripes - KI Studios
for 65 bucks.

For a color change (no design or printing) About $500 worth of vinyl material, and about 40 hours worth of skilled labor.
Labor rates will vary depending on experience.

Have you thought about dipping your car? Cost will be a fraction of a wrap and with more color choices. Here's a place in PR.
Plasti Dip - Caguas - EuroCustomsPR
Dip goes on quick, but isn't smooth and doesn't last. It is also a real pain to take off. Often times you need chemicals and scrubbing, and are still left with overspray in all the cracks. Count on a full paint correction after removing a dip.
I own a wrap business so I'm biased, but I wouldn't plasti dip more than little pieces like mirrors or side vents.

Having done both a full wrap and a full dip I would never ever consider a dip again. Especially for something like a
porsche
. Maybe a honda. The overall finish looks terrible in my opinion. It looks like somebody stuck playdough all over the car.

Yes no issues what so ever. The black parts on the
Cayman
in my signature are all wrap and here is a link when I wrapped it grey/black:

Matte / satin finish are definitely higher maintenance. You might not notice the dirt as much on a matte finish but it sure collects more. If you want to shed dirt from sticking to it, you could do a Ceramic Pro, or other similar coating, on top of the wrap or paint job. I can never stress it enough to customers that they should actually clean their car more often with a wrap than they did without the wrap. - If they want it to last.

Visiting this post again as I'm about to wrap my
cayman
. Kyle you mentioned
ceramic coating
the matte? Although in leaning towards brushed this is something I had never thought of. Wonder how long this improve longevity. I got about 2 years from my last wrap before it started fading and I was happy with that. It was a 3m wrap but after looking at reviews it seems there are some good competitors now.

Textured wraps are a pain to keep clean, and don't last long. If it's a temporary thing, just go for the look you want. If you plan on keeping the wrap for a long time, pick a gloss color. You can coat it, seal it, wax it, what ever your method is...
Avery Dennison makes a spray sealant for wraps. I used that on my car wrap it was wrapped satin. It works, makes it nice and slick but needs to be reapplied often.

I saw an
Audi
sedan a few days ago that was a matte black. It looked AMAZING! Since it was an older model, I don't think it was a factory paint job, probably a wrap. So I was all excited to begin my research into getting my 07 gloss black
Cayman
wrapped. My first internet research stop is, of course, P9. But now I'm bummed out to read a matte wrap only lasts a YEAR ( I store my car over winter, so I might get two years.) Given this is an expensive procedure, I'm wondering if it's worth it. Or, since this is an older thread, are there newer, better, longer-lasting matte wraps on the market now?
Assuming a person uses a reputable installer and a quality wrap, what is the price range for getting a
Cayman
wrapped (matte black over a gloss black)?
Also, are there places that will paint (permanent, not dipping) the car a matte finish? Any idea what that would cost?
Toyed with the idea of wrapping my white
981
. One thot was the black film that reflects gold in
headlights
, and the other was having the
Porsche
crest printed and wrapped over the whole car. Ended up just doing the classic rocker panel stripe.

Had mine wrapped Metallic Purple from a base gloss black earlier in the year. Has been by far my favourite modification to the car and well worth the money.
As previously mentioned however don't just go for the cheapest company. Wrapping is an art form and to get the best finish you need someone who really knows what they are doing and has a high attention to detail! Also consider how they handle aftercare as no matter what wrap is applied or by who sometimes there can be peeling usually within the first few weeks so you need someone who understands this and will happily replace anything that does happen.
I had a few small corners on mine where this happened and because I had looked into the company and been to see the guy a few times as soon as he heard from me, It was booked in and sorted within a week. Not had an issue since.
Since this thread has been revitalized I figured I'd post some pictures of the evolution of my 987. It's a black car, I had it wrapped with 3m 1080 Sunflower gloss. Wheels and calipers painted. Mirrors, side vents, spoiler, and '
porsche
' stripe done in 3m carbon fiber vinyl. Car has been wrapped for 2 years now and still looks great. Everyone assumes it is yellow paint, I've even had people ask if it's a PTS color.
