POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I hear on very good authority that unfortunately that all Porsche production will stop indefinitely imminently. Some lines have stopped already being built I believe. Apparently it's because all Porsche wiring looms are made in and imported from the Ukraine. Another issue caused by this senseless, awful conflict.

POST 2Original post

Most German car manufacturers in particular source wiring looms etc from Ukraine so the impact on Porsche and others with major supply issues now is clear. Not good.

POST 3Original post

I can see it halted for at least 6 months until they can gear up production of looms at another factory/country.....and doubt that is turned around in less than 6 months. this was from 3 days ago. https://www.ft.com/content/f163d21f-6136-4771-ae92... Maybe the new news since that article is that they have to just shut it all down. Edited by julian987R on Saturday 5th March 19:44

POST 4Original post

I've read that it is the Macan and Panamera and due to world issues. Wouldn't be suspired if that includes the Taycan. https://flatsixes.com/porsche-news/porsche-halts-p...

Yep, my heart goes out to all those waiting for their new toys, still they’ve got the scant consolation of not having their houses bombed, family members slaughtered, and their country undergoing a scorched earth policy instigated by an individual one sandwich short of picnic. FFS, what’s wrong with you people ? 1500 miles from our shores a country is being destroyed and the lives of those living in it peacefully up until 10 days are now being torn apart. Bad news is sending your wife and children to another country to ensure they survive, whilst you stay to defend your country, it’s NOT worrying that your shiny new toy will be delivered 6 months late. Try getting a grip and a sense of perspective. Edited by Slippydiff on Sunday 6th March 00:25

The apparent lack of second sources is not good supply chain management. Resilience costs some margin but has largely been abandoned on the altar of lowest product cost.

Not ideal news but certainly not something I'd have the balls to complain about given the cause of it. I never thought for one minute my Taycan was going to be on time, even before this happened.

Absolutely, but you wouldn't believe some of the stuff that apparently goes on ad-infinitum. Not Porsche but some other manufacturers aren't even ISIR'ing, PPAP'ing etc, and then wonder why things don't work. It's all a bit of a perfect storm at the moment. Still, as has been said, it's nothing compared to what the population of Ukraine are facing.

I understand people have heated feelings about this particular war compared to all the others currently raging we're not that interested in. There is, however no real need to berate people having a normal discussion on the marques sub section about some of the consequences of this conflict and how they affect the marque. Perhaps I would have been better served to just continue the discussion without commenting on slippydiffs diatribe which frankly I found totally unnecessary.

All totally relevant to a Porsche thread, I’m sure. It's true, but the West opened their arms to Russia as well ... hence the West's dependence now on Russia. Russia were at one time a candidate to join Nato ... Surely Putin is now only concerned with maintaining his status in Russia, not building the success of Russia for all Russians ... Ukranians are not Natzis. Most Russians are not Natzis. But Putin claims that Natzis are the problem and that Russia has not invaded Ukraine, Ukranians are bombing themselves. So many lies with so much pain and loss. I am sure that the West have their faults ... but building in the hope of good for more people has to be a better solution than destroying in the hope of better times for only a very few in power. Ukrainians are not choosing to escape to Russia ... and they understood Russia far better than we do. Russia says today that they will not invade any more neighbouring countries ... because they have not invaded Ukraine. It's tough to negotiate with that. We have no option but to share the pain.

Curledge said: Real world problems whilst in the meantime the Ukrainians are dodging bombs and bullets I'm surprised you had time to post this in between your campaigning for the invasion in Ukraine to stop, and your political push for the senseless bombing in Yemen to stop, or the great work you are doing to highlight the torture or Uyghur Muslims in China, or the many other issues in the world you are actively solving, yet you have time for a virtue signalling type b ks post. Maybe I'm being harsh and it's a rare break for you from your feeding of hungry kids in the UK, or helping our cities homeless. The point is Ukraine have been bombing down in the South since 2014.I guess people listen to too much western media s te.

POST 65Original post

Are you seriously trying to defend the carpet-bomber ? Or in your view have the Ukranians been asking for-it ? Many Ukranians have not been able to leave and are dying under the bombing ... innocent civilians suffering vacuum and cluster bombs both of which are banned by a convention to which the Russians have signed up. Evacuation routes are regularly promised, agreed, and then targeted by the Russians. But I guess in your world the Ukranians are doing this to themselves ? The Russians have been so neglected by the West that they hold the Chair in the United Nations ... Discuss, if you dare.

Evacuation routes are regularly promised, agreed, and then targeted by the Russians. But I guess in your world the Ukranians are doing this to themselves ? The Russians have been so neglected by the West that they hold the Chair in the United Nations ... Discuss, if you dare. Yes, I dare. That crap you have written above . Let's start at the beginning. The USA has been pumping billions, yes billions of dollars into Ukraine since 2014 and for what reason?Ukraine has been bombing the Donbas and area since, any casualties there at all, or don't they matter? Ukraine wanting to join NATO, thanks to Western money including the British. Do you seriously believe Russia would allow that and have more missiles pointed to the East? Kyiv has had plenty of time to evacuate, the Russians have been at a standstill on the outskirts for a week, remember Western media saying that the convoy had run out of fuel and food, they have been taking hits while stationary. They won't make a move until Kyiv is surrounded, hence my saying Putin will carpet bomb it off the face of the earth. Lets talk of the sanctions, the West will feel this more than Russia will, petrol prices through the roof , wheat prices through the roof, gas prices through the roof. You really must think Putin hasn't weighed up his options in advance, but the biggest laugh ever is the West banning his oil and gas imports, bet you haven't even considered that so let me tell you. As soon as the West did it , oil and gas doubled over night meaning Russia had to supply less and make considerably more money , great eh? I am not a Putin supporter or a Ukrainian supporter, when will the West learn to keep their noses out of everyone's business? This is what faces the world if the West continue, Putin is going to demolish Kyiv, that may make you feel like I am a tw2t, but it is real unless the West want to step in.USA has seen the threat of this by turning down using their airfield to send Mig Jets to Ukraine. Johnson out in Saudi now to do a deal for cheap oil, even though the Saudis executed 81 people today, has promised to still supply weapons to use on Yemen, that's acceptable in your book, is it? Next time you or anyone wants to jump on their high horses, and that includes you racing driver Taffy who hasn't got 3k miles on his ultimate RS, look at the facts. If you feel that inclined, you can take some of these so-called refugees, all dressed in the best Western clothing into your home. I'll just keep my nose out until some fooker pokes his finger in my eye.

You do have to wonder about their risk assessors decisions that by saving €5 per wiring loom (from it being made in Ukraine) and how that cheaper cog in the chain has brought tipped their whole apple cart over. i am not saying they that gig shouldn't go to Ukraine, far from it, but don't they mitigate against risk with back up plans?

I often wonder about risk assessments like this. Far easier to do it for things like a fire in your factory or something else, but with the chip shortage then a war I wonder how good these assessments are on small aspects of the logistics. Perhaps they never updated it. There must be loads of steps and contracts and partners etc Perhaps that £5 saving enables something else to be less risky. That said, there must be a fair bit of panic in the industry and it's not going to be only Porsche.

POST 79Original post

Thank you for your reply. Yep 100% agree. What with the chip shortage which was a wake up call to manufacturers on their reliance upon 3rd parties, this situation will get them thinking all the more about business models. Good article from a day ago on this at https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/business-tech%2...

Good article from a day ago on this at https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/business-tech%2... Interesting. It will really benefit those in high volume groups. Will be interesting how it pans out. Which parts they bring in house Vs which they continue to source. Chip shortage will take some time to resolve and this "invasion" doesn't look like ending soon and will have impacts far more wide ranging than we know. Another aspect of this is the impact that it has on the production ratio of cars. Selling taycans enables Porsches to be sold based on average emissions. So there is that extra balancing act.

Oh yes that is a good point on average emissions...is it something like for every Taycan they sell that in effect allows them to sell a 911....or one Taycan = ten 911's....might the latter. Either way, they'll need to keep the Taycan dream alive and probably have to prioritise those over their petrol cars.

Exactly this, in my line of corporate work, we never put all our eggs in one basket, so for a major manufacturer like the VW group to be s tting themselves over wiring loom supplies from Ukraine, then seems to me these guys don't plan properly or do their risk assessments to be able to have mitigation plans in place. Then again, in my mind I'm thinking they will have mitigating plans in place and us the general public are not going to get every internal detail being discussed at the VW group. So whilst I expect cars to be delayed, I can't see production being halted for too long. During Covid and semi-conductor issues, VW group shut the Skoda and SEAT factories to prioritise usage of the semi-conductors on their more profitable marques like Porsche and Audi. So I'm sure they're probably thinking of things like this and other options available to them, including talking with other partners and suppliers to make the wiring looms for them. There's probably a Command Centre Team setup who are fully focused on dealing with this situation.

POST 84Original post

Whichever Ukranian company is supplying these wiring looms is clearly not the only supplier Porsche. Otherwise we’d be looking at a much longer production halt than a few weeks. They are clearly already using more than one supplier. So they haven’t sold themselves down the river to save £5. There is a lot more to supply say a wiring loom than saving £5 per item. You need to deal with a well capitalised company that has a long term track record of delivering a high quality product made to extremely precise engineering standards……there are not many parts more critical to a modern car than a wiring loom. Cable manufacturing whether that’s for wiring looms or not is a very difficult business….race to the bottom in terms of prices, very few people prepared to pay for quality (wiring looms being an exception) and volatile input costs (copper). The slim margins and difficult business model mean that low labour rates are very important which clearly means you are in more difficult parts of the world….
