I've been wanting to do this for a while but did not trust myself with the process... But on a rainy 4th of july, I figured why not...
1) start with a nice clean car, and clay the area to be sure it's nice...Oh, yes, a lift helps so you don't have to bend over too much ;-) I removed my yellowing fender guards in 5 minutes flat, with a minimum of hair dryer exposure... Lucky I guess !
2) Position the sticker/stripe - I had a picture for reference, probably still screwed it up but it's close enough.
3) Spray soapy water under the sticker, peel off backing... Honestly I sprayed *way* too much and it took forever to stick in places. A light mist might have been better... or maybe I avoided a catastrophe, who knows.. Squeegee the excess out...
4) I let it dry for a few minutes, used a hair dryer in places, and peeled off the top tape as soon as I could... No idea if it's the proper method or not but I wanted to get at the bubbles ASAP...
5) A few bubbles, still dust or specs of stuff despite my cleaning... If it's like my house windows (a pro recently applied 3M solar film), it'll get better after a few sunny days and I can always revisit with a needle !
Yes, the end of the sticker curves upwards where I wrapped it around the wheel opening... because of the fender shape... I since trimmed the excess off, the Porsche photos show the script stopping at the edge anyway.. The part under the air scoop that worried me was actually easy. Cutting properly for the door openings, now that was harder.... Not perfect, but I like the look, especially on a white car. My oldie parked next to the CS is getting them next (period correct), and worst case I can always redo it later ! It's really not THAT hard, I have 2 left hands...
Oh, I need new fender guards now.. I hear the factory ones turn yellow faster than you can blink... Where do I get the good ones? 3M?
Looks classy . . . I like it.
very nice work! where'd you get the decal if you don't mind me asking?
You can get them at porschestripes.com. I got some of the first ones for my boxster s and I love the look. You can choose among several colors, too. Very straightforward install if you're careful & patient.
Looks perfect on a white Cayman!
Thank you, and I agree, obviously ;-)
anybody know where I should get replacement fender guards that don't turn yellow ?
Stripes look excellent and even more impressed with the lift in your garage ! Lucky
You should write this up as an Article for our ARTICLES section, if you need help doing so, please let me know! There is a tutorial in the articles section on how to do it.
Looks fantastic, really breaks up the starkness of the white (which I also have). I painted side vents black, but still considering either plain stripe or Spyder decal.
Thanks for sharing details and photo's.
Well, I just got my Seal Grey Cayman and I was thinking about silver metallic or gold metallic. Does anyone have any other pics or ideas about what would look good on this color?
What color is your interior?
Stripes look great! Wish I had a lift like that...although, I'd probably never leave my garage.
Woow its looks good, ill be getting my 08 cs next week those stripes are on my to do list. its also white:dance:
I'm lifting this old thread because there are more or less no pics of this mod (Spyder style stripe on a Cayman) posted online anymore since the pic links in this thread are dead. I have vacuumed the Internet and found only one car: A Gulf striped Cayman race car with the early 911R style decal:
After a few tries with Photoshopping similar stripes on my car I thought it would look good so I gave it a go, and I think it turned out very well:
"But why not just go with the R-style decal?" some might think. Well, I never really understood the idea of the decal to stop at the door on the 987 (981 is different due to the vent), to me it looks like the decal piece behind the door has fallen off or wasn't replaced after fixing the rear wing after an accident or something. I also wanted to lengthen the rear of the car, the Cayman design is a bit "nose heavy" to begin with, and the small piece on the front bumper of the R decal makes it even more obvious. With the Spyder stripe the panel under the vent looks much longer.
And why "3400 RT"? Because even people that have very little interest in cars recognize it as a Porsche, so pointing that out seems a bit unnecessary. Since the Spyder decal is a retro thing connecting back to Porsche race cars from the 60's I thought I would reuse the naming from the 356 Carrera 2000 GS/GT. A lot of non-Porsche car guys know the power plant is a six cylinder boxer engine but displacement is not always so easy to know (it has differed a lot in Porsches over the years) so I thought that would be appropriate to "declare". The "RT" is a model designation that Porsche haven't used themselves (so no imitation of an already used model designation) and it stands for what I use the car for, "Rennen Turismo" or "Road & Track" (autocross competition and touring/backroad driving). I chose red lettering to pick up the red from the brake calipers.
Can't see the photos, but apparently I'm "Today's Big Winner."
Can't you see the photos in my post either? They are uploaded to this site. Or did you just look at the first post?
I recently added these to my 2015 981 CS. I added them to the rockers so they would provide a little protection.
