Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i'm new to the board and have been following for a spell. this past weekend i test drove cars at various dealers: boxster, boxster S, some used 99 and 00 996s and the creme: 2002 996. all i can say is "wow". right now i've been tooling around in a supercharged M coupe and i thought that is/was fast if a little peaky. my car feels so slow now after that flat six wailing behind my ears. i know i'll have quite the bit of time to learn rear-engined handling, though. i was so impressed, while my wife and i were dead against buying a car, i put a deposit down for a 2003 C4S (i'm in no rush). just thought i would share. sometimes, peak output numbers mean absolutely nothing. i've coming from a car which has dyno'd at 350hp/310 (crank) and it really felt slower than the 320hp/273ft# 3.6L flat six.

Blackdawg, The S52 with a S/C, be it Dinan, ERT, RMS basically cannot produce full boost until near 6k rpm or so, and until then the car will be a dog. If you look at the dyno sheets on that setup your low end torque just is unimpressive. To compensate, you can go with a different pulley go up your boost and waterinject or aftercool it. Some of the guys on the bimmer boards have done this and are getting 290-300 rwhp and similar torque. The standard S/C set-up is really only doing 260 or so rwhp. Add a little heat and it really becomes a dog. By comparo, the torque curves of the Euro S52 motor is amazing - torque everywhere and it is totally flat - no peaks and so you have gobs of oomph. I would imagine the 996 motors are the same. Torque is cool. Eugene

POST 4Original post

As a 99 C2coupe owner, and a Porsche salesman since the introduction of the 996(having driven tons of them, including '02's)I can comfortably say the '02 is a FAR superior car than the '01. Not just the 20hp. Twenty hp wont get me too excited, but where they placed it is what matters. Way more seat of the pants feel down low and in the middle. Im in agreement as far as the 'WOW' goes.....
