Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As the cat back system broke in over 12-15 heat cycles, some of the initial sound resonation issues I had went away but I was still getting what some may describe as slight drone under extreme loads (flooring gas at 2000-2300 rpm in 3rd , 4th gear).
Some of you have probably read my posts about the exhaust nightmare I went through over the past few months.
Against all logical advice I decided to take a chance on what I know to be the worst product I have ever purchased for a car, motorcycle period! (I purchased a Circuit werks exhaust system)
Several agonizing hours and several Hundred dollars (wasted) later.. I am glad to say that the bad days of putting up with rattles and drone are behind me.
In my search for a well designed/engineered exhaust system and in my quest to not repeat my last mistake, I got in touch with John @ Soul Performance. I have dealt with a few performance companies over the years, I am old enough to have dealt directly with companies like HKS and Greddy (for my 93 RX-7 TT and MR-2), Peter farrell Supercars etc. Very few companies and personnel come close to the customer service and attention to detail I have seen from Soul Performance.
Although I have just received the product and did an unboxing, I am happy to say that each and every claim made by Soul Performance and other who have purchased the same product has been completely accurate.
The built quality and craftsmanship is by far the best I have seen, their proprietary finish is amazing in person and everything from finish, feel, welding is superior to anything I have seen.
I am attaching some pics of the unboxing so far.. I cannot wait to instal this on my car in the
next
couple of days and post a video (hopefully soon).
Thank you very much for the kind words! Can't wait to hear your feedback after you get the system installed!
Already missing the golden age of Japanese sports cars like you mentioned - it's getting hard and harder to find clean 90's specimens that aren't rusted out! I've sold quite a bit of exhaust systems at a previous job and had a lot of feedback from customers on all aspects of the product from component failure rates, to improper packing procedures, and even marketing the sound incorrectly. We've applied this experience to make sure we're hitting the right marks. We do our best to make sure that we set high expectations and deliver upon them - from how the exhaust is packaged to how it performs - and we appreciate that you appreciate it.

I am trying my best to get Soul to move
987.1
headers for the street up their to do list. Specifically the longer the tubes the better into a 200 cell converter. Guys we need your input back to Soul to make this happen.
Please do follow up after you have installed. Drone is the issue for me. I've experienced it in other cars and felt I totally ruined the car. I have
PDK
981
CS and I don't want to have to drive in 6th gear in order to get rid of drone. I want to be able to cruise on the freeway in 7th between 65 and 85 in comfort. At the same time having the car a bit louder at high rpm would be great. It is my hope they have solved that issue.
I have this exhaust installed in my
981 Boxster
S
PDK
. Valve close, it’s only slightly louder than stock. It will drone a bit when throttling between 70-80 in 7th. At cruising speed around 75 in 7th is near quiet.
Valve open is madness but addictive. It’s loud below 3000 but glorious above that. I had the valves closed most of the time initially but now it’s mostly valve open.
The car does start up with the valves open, so you’ll be waking up the neighbors.
Overall, love the exhaust. Icing in the cake is you can program the remote to your homelink (which I prefer).

Fit this system up to my 06 CS MT. Agreed..wonderful build quality and packed so well it took 15 minutes just to liberate it from the box!
It replaced a 'speed-shop-special' that was wicked above 3g on the flats...friends would have me blip it in their driveway, elbow each other and just smile. Unfortunately it was dreadful pulling up my small town hills at the 35mph speed limit during my pre-dawn commute. Droned so bad, lights in houses were snapping on as I passed! After buying the OEM over-engineered
Porsche
mounting system that was missing from my current 2-pt rubber hanger setup, I finally put this system on. Apart from 5/6 snapped studs the install went well. Fired her up and what a difference!
I would say the sound is still 'bold' but it allows me to drive differently (better) and my s-o-t-p dyno seems to like the shared back pressure at the tip crossover (clever). Old system was 2 separate pipes with glass pak looking muffs welded at 45 degrees to the hacked off OEM exhaust piping. I must say the drone was reduced 80% along the same route. Jacking it up on the I-890 cloverleaf and blasting onto the highway (never over 55
I am most satisfied. Still can rattle the bridge hardware when passing under but most tame hitting the city streets beyond. I can even hear the other noises she makes now (that I didn't know where there) and the radio...well I can hear it now!
Most recommended! And I, too, have been monkeying with exhaust since the 70's. Best sound since my '72 BB Chevelle SS! Excellent support (thnx John) and rapid response to any questions/issues. I am impressed! I can absolutely recommend this system for the
987.1
.
YES PLEASE make some street legal headers for her, I will even pre-order them if that helps!
I've been reading and watching the pre/post install videos for Soul's products. I just flew through Philly, last night, which made me think of them.
Without being a d*ck about it, I'm in a wait-and-observe mode. I know all manufacturers need to get their R&D back and profit as much as they can. When I see competitors coming in $500 below the sale prices, however, my motivation to purchase drops.
Waiting to see what the future holds. All fabricators that design for the 987 and
981
are very appreciated, and we're lucky to have top flight companies still making cool stuff for our cars.
UPDATE:
Apologies for the delay...
(I have responded to all the PMs and emails )
As I posted at the beginning of the thread I installed the Soul Performance Cat back system almost a month ago. As reported by a number of people already, I was happy to confirm the built quality, efficient design plus service and support I received from Soul Performance, especially John @ SoulPP
As the cat back system broke in over 12-15 heat cycles, some of the initial sound resonation issues I had went away but I was still getting what some may describe as slight drone under extreme loads (flooring gas at 2000-2300 rpm in 3rd , 4th gear). I reached out to a few people and I was told to replace the 152,000 mile old Stock Headers. The Cats in my headers have been shot for a long time and I needed to get new headers anyways.
Happy to report that adding the headers to the cat back absolutely fixed any / all resonation issues I was having.. and let’s remember, I have a 152,000 mile otherwise stock car with tired and old stock suspension , trunks seals etc so in my opinion that says a lot about how well designed this product really is.
I share this with great humility, but I have been “modding” and tuning Cars and Sport bikes for close to 30 years, and I can say this with absolute confidence that Soup Performance Full Exhaust system is hands down the Best system I have ever added to any of my vehicles. To reiterate, there is no “….given the price” or “…for the money” at the end of that statement. It is the best I personally have tried…. period.
Sound:
I was extremely skeptical of the videos on youtube as sound can be manipulated, most microphones don’t ever pick up accurate real world exhaust sound. I also heard one of the users on youtube use a phrase ( Ferrari like Wail ) that sounded like a lot of exaggeration..
Well, happy to report that I was wrong! I really have no other ways to describe the WOT sound you get after 4000-ish RPM.. Ferrari F430 like wail..
I don’t know how its possible to get that kind of exotic sound from a flat 6.. but the folks at Soul have found a way.
Lessons learned:
Here are some of the lessons I learned during install…
- Header Gaskets have a right way and wrong way.. Install them correctly or you will end up with Exhaust leaks. If possible, just use your OEM gaskets.
- The last header bolt on passenger side (towards the back end of car) is very hard to get to, even after removing the plastic under tray. You will need a rotating socket joint with the smallest 13mm socket you can get your hands on.
- DO not over tighten header bolts. OEM header bolts are steel bolts going into an aluminum head… Use a Torque wrench and torque them to 17 ft pounds.
- If your state requires emission inspection, be sure to get 100 Cell cats and O2 extenders sold by Soul PP. They are a must have.
Please feel free to PM me with any questions, I would be happy to answer or send pictures.
Here are a few pictures from the install:
WRONG WAY Gasket: (side with thicker border is on same side as pipes)
Right Way ( side with thicker border is on the opposite side of pipes)
Thank you so much for the high praise and for taking two chances with us to get you the sound you're looking for, we're thrilled that we meet your expectations!
Next time stop through, we'll show you a good time! We understand your concerns, I invite you to call in and we can chat about anything and everything. I'd be happy to give you any details you need, insight on our past experience, why we do what we do, and where we are headed so that you can feel more comfortable. That's what makes us - us. We're very open and focused on customer service so if we can do anything to assuage any concerns, just ask!
