This is essentially why lois replaced deposits post 981 GT4 as many OPCs held up to 70 deposits for an average of only 15 cars per OPC across 40 UK OPCs in 2015.

Suggestion
Imo there won't actually be much profit for Porsche in a c£75k GT4/Spyder with the semi bespoke 'low volume' engine GT3 suspension and other more expensive bits and factoring in a 'limited run' on numbers of around 450 UK cars this will tend to make the UK market at least even less profitable for these cars for Porsche.

Yep, that's definitely not how it worked for my car and not how I understand the system to work.
I've decided I'm going to move into the realms of owning a Porsche.
After extensive reading I'd like to go with a GT4, it's only going to be a weekend vehicle.
Current production lead times delays aside..... Will a Porsche centre sell me one?
Bit of research suggests that they don't sell the GT cars to people who are unknowns.
Also do I believe the rumours the order book is closed ?
My only experience with Porsche is a test drive with a Taycan last year, but ultimately I couldn't justify one.
I've created a build and emailed to the sales person I spoke to last year so I will report back but I'm curious as a newbie to Porsche.
Possibly, it certainly can't hurt to ask. If the order books are closed, combined with the semiconductor shortage your best best might be to go for a cancelled order. While you won't be able to spec it yourself, it may match up to what you would have wanted anyway, and then at least you're not paying overs on the second hand market.
Good luck with your search.
Local Porsche centre called me earlier and said they can sell me a GT4, but each dealer only gets so many slots.
You've got to pay a deposit down and the earliest you'll probably get your own build is middle of 2022, perhaps if lucky a bit quicker with a cancelled order slot or transfer your deposit a low mileage second hand that comes along.
(I'm sure you all know this)
So it seems they aren't closing the order book which is encouraging!
There may some opportunities if you’re happy with a rebuilt engine. A number of people have cancelled GT4s that are already at dealers because of the conrod issue. I believe they have an extended warranty of 6 years on the engine. See the Conrod thread for details.

No, that's 'Conn rods'.
Nice that one can maybe get hold of a new GT4 (if indeed one wanted one).
I already had a 981 Boxster and wanted to upgrade to a 718 Spyder, tried two OPCs both basically laughed at me and said no.
Had to have a comprehensive buying history with the OPC to get enough points to get on the ladder, just moved on, sold the Boxster and took my business elsewhere, simples.

No, that’s ‘connecting rods’ if we’re being pedantic.
Good luck securing a car.
But production will end this Summer for both the GT4 and Spyder so you would be better either trying to secure a cancelled order or buying used.

But some people are saying 2022 delivery for their gt4 ?

I’m not sure the 718 Spyder is an upgrade. The 981 was perfect for the road.

I'd be interested to know the thinking behind being able to justify a GT4 but not being able to justify a Taycan.

Maybe but only because of the delays caused by parts supply issues affecting Porsche and most other manufacturers and engine issues specifically with the 718.

My OPC along with others have advised September will likely be the last month for production.

They're speculating, and from my sources... they're wrong. Production still planned to carry on well into 2022 at the moment, notwithstanding a change of plan of course given the semiconductor and other parts shortages.

Once you factor in the production closure in August in Germany it seems they have (at least in the short - medium term) they are struggling to meet production targets. The next generation Cayman will be a change in platform so they are probably thinking of bringing forward the next phase of development.
Hopefully anyone waiting get's an allocation.

It’s always a difficult one to call but from my experience (inside an OEM), often production is planned in order to reach profit targets. In a time of parts restrictions or factory issues, it’s much more common to delay the launch of a new car than bring it forward. I fact in my 18yrs I’ve never seen a whole model production cycle shortened.
That said, Individual models may come and go so it depends if they want to remove gt4/Spyder early and leave other 718s going. With plenty of demand I just can’t see the business case for doing that.
I’ve got a deposit on a Spyder so obviously I’m also hoping that history is a good guide here but do accept that Porsche may choose a different route… why keep the line open if you can’t get parts etc…
I don’t know enough about their production line setup to comment, it could well be that the replacement would be built on a different line altogether.
Fingers crossed they don’t end it early!

How much more does it cost Porsche to build a £70k Cayman than to build a £45k Cayman? Let's call it £5,000 difference in parts, exactly the same cost in labour and exactly the same amount of factory overheads . IMO they will be more than happy to build as many GT4 and GTS cars as possible, bearing in mind the extra £20,000 of profit in each car!

More of a branding exercise as an entry level GT car at the price point ££.

I'm a director of my own company and as you all know with the tax benefits it's become a no brainer to run a budget EV for commuting.
Before I was running one car and paying BIK etc, I considered running a Taycan through the company but elected to have a s
t box EV for the commute miles and then pay myself more salary for a proper car for evening and weekends.
The OPC I have contacted seem to think production is running through 2022. Just weighing up if it's worth paying the deposit to 'secure' and see if the one I spec would actually be ordered. I do suspect they might try to sell me a low mile'er in the network in a few months time.

Why not just lease a vehicle if you're the director and avoid all BIK full stop?, and as stated a deposit means nothing sadly, an allocation is a whole different prospect to a deposit.
av185 said:
An OPC deposit means nothing and does not guarantee you a car.
If it's a deposit with a confirmed build slot and a commission number then it's all good. But a lot of OPCs are sneakily taking deposits without actually a build slot, in effect giving them 5k or 10K to sit in their bank accounts.
The more deposits an OPC builds, the higher likelihood of them getting further allocations through

Porsche GB guidance states OPCs should return a customers deposit unless there is a guaranteed build slot but a few don't comply. There is no real reason for an OPC to retain a customers deposit without an allocated build slot.
This is essentially why lois replaced deposits post 981 GT4 as many OPCs held up to 70 deposits for an average of only 15 cars per OPC across 40 UK OPCs in 2015.
Their car allocation is preset following the introduction of the lois system and the number of deposits they take is now irrelevant and is in reality dictated mainly by the size of the centre broad customer base and past sales volumes.
Edited by av185 on Monday 7th June 21:49
I understand it doesn't guarantee a build slot, the OPC have been pretty straight forward from the start.
The way they have said it to me is that with the GT cars, you've got show you're a serious buyer and putting some money down shows you're not a time waster. Once the build is confirmed then you pay the 10% value.
The amount they've asked isn't huge and they've told me that the earliest I would actually take delivery would be at least 12 months away.
Just got to decide if I'm happy paying some money up front now.
Rojibo said:
This sounds like more slightly unscrupulous business practice from your neighbourhood OPC.
Yep, that's definitely not how it worked for my car and not how I understand the system to work.
You should only pay one deposit, which should be £10k for GT products (some OPCs may ask for less) and it's usually asked for upon confirmation of a build slot.
A two step deposit process for a build slot they didn't know that'll get in 12 months time is not usual.
Yep. Paid £5k deposit and was given my build slot and a signed order form. Standard is £10k for GT products and Turbos, but had done business with them in the past.
Asking for a couple of thousand for speculation of a slot is just a bit wrong IMO.
I think it is very dependent on the dealer and the people involved. Whilst there is an “official” LOI and deposit on confirmation of allocation process, I can see no harm in leaving a small deposit, with the LOI. Assuming you are not known to the dealer it is no more than a gesture of good faith, It’s not as if the cash is going to earn shed loads of interest elsewhere. Most people on here are serial GT Porsche buyers and do seem to forget that it feels like a very closed shop when you are on the outside looking in. The most important thing to remember is that no LOI or deposit matters one jot until you have an allocation in writing from the OPC.
It’s a gamble some you win some you loose, just remember to keep playing the game.

That’s pretty much what I’ve done and certainly doesn’t feel unfair in the sense that both myself and the opc are upfront about it.
I put £3k down in January, signed order forms inc provisional spec etc, spent a good hour or two chatting with the sales guy with the guidance that I’m on their list, and based on the rate that we’re getting build slot, I’d likely be offered a slot around the end of 2021, early 2022.
The opc don’t know me apart from an enquiry 2yrs ago when they were clear that they couldn’t offer me a car even if I put money down.
Since then I’ve popped into see them, had a coffee and catch up chat just to keep the dialogue open. I should hear from them again towards the end of the summer for another short catch up.
It’d be a lot of effort and hassle for the opc to take small deposits and then let customers down, it’s not like either I nor Porsche will earn much interest on this amount.
How many times we hear of these deposits being refunded, or offered an alternative, would sir perhaps like this cancelled order?
I really don't think they should be taking money with no guarantee of a build slot, did I imagine it or didn't they get in some hot water over this? Anyway, I wouldn't be doing that, I'd be doing something else with the money.
I don’t understand the argument of not much money for deposit. If the opc is naughty and taking loads of deposits then it all adds up.
Sounds like many are hoarding cash, especially the ones promising delivery next year.
Yeah I agree it's not 'best practice' but it's a chicken and egg situation.
My experience so far is like @MrChips They've not pulled wool over my eyes and been straight forward.
They have said in a more ambiguous way, for lack of a better phrase, if you want a GT car and you aren't known to us then that's the terms.
I think the real grey areas comes when they aren't clear if it's limited production.
The vibe I get is that the GT4 isn't but they don't say it directly because I assume Porsche and it's dealers want to manipulate the market.
Porsche GT cars are always limited production in that there's only so many they can put down the line along with the regular models. Factory capacity is not massive, so they're all limited in some way, but they do generally manage the GT products so there are less of them than others (the 981 GT4 being a recent exception though, most other Cayman models were reduced in number to churn out as many 981 GT4s as they could).

How many RHD are around I wonder?
568 is the peak number ever 981 GT4 registered (taxed or sorn) according to how many left.
vs 520 981 Cayman GTS split between manual & PDK.
Porsche had to convert 981 builds to GT4 in order to try to satisfy demand… within 1 MY, 2016..
There seems to have been 460 718 GT4 manual so far and PDKs aren’t showing yet with more deliveries of both still inbound… so final numbers for GT4 will largely be similar for both Gen… but maybe demand is a bit more diffused this time as there is the multi year production run, multiple gearbox choices, pandemic impact and also the GTS 4.0 will have appealed more to many that want the 6 pot but not the track chassis.
Edited by TDT on Thursday 10th June 00:10
My numbers are DVLA registrations using their data.
I've not checked 718 numbers but I agree and suspect they'll end up similar to 981s once production finishes.

Pretty much same experience with myself, placed £5k refundable in July with provisional spec etc, They told me can expect delivery around end Q1 next year, but whether or not that actually materialises or not is another thing, just got to sit here with fingers crossed (had emails saying I'm top of the "list" now). If I don't end up getting one I'll just ask for my money back, I want the car that I asked for, not an equivalent. (although I know that's not always the case with Porsche). Also asked for one when they originally came out but laughed in my face, so this is more promising if anything.
It is what it is. No-one is entitled to anything so if you get one I see it as a bonus.
I'm very much interested in a GT4RS but I haven't got a cat in hell's chance of being offered one by my OPC. That's just how it is, and I totally accept that

Sure, I can understand why Porsche do it, but many customers don’t like all the politics around dealers controlling the market. Porsche would still be successful without the influence of corrupted dealers.
Got a friend who's contact 2 dealers trying to order a GT4, he's got no Porsche history. The first said the dealer principle would need to call him to discuss - still waiting for the call 2 weeks later. Another he managed to speak to someone and they said you've basically got no chance unless you buy several cars off their forecourt that they are struggling to shift, and that will get you on the list.
I've personally had several Porsches now, from the posters on my wall as a kid I've always lusted after one, but given the attitude towards it's customer base I'm really sour towards Porsche now.... effectively walking away from the brand 2 years ago (in the sense I wouldn't buy another) and eventually selling my car in March this year and moved to another marque.
Saying OPC are corrupt is a bit strong. I see it as a business looking after their regular/valued customers and seeking to maximise itheir profits - surely this is common to any successful business.

Far too many sour grapes on this subject from those that don't get what they want/insist on/demand/believe they're entitled to IMHO. Not enough looking at the bigger picture or seeing it from the OPC's perspective.
As the Rolling Stones once said, You Can't Always Get What You Want!

I don't think so, I know of another owner (GT3) who had to buy several cars - a new Turbo S springs to mind and sell it back to the dealer without it actually leaving the showroom floor and losing 10K in the process, just to help get him on the list. Now in my eyes that's total corruption.

Very, very similar points being made on the Rolex thread.
Thing is, it works for the brand. Maybe not for individual buyers, but for the brand? A win.

It currently works for the brand, but other brands are showing the way imo. Put orders online and cut out the crap I say.
As a customer, I agree. I won't buy another Rolex, nor a Porsche GT, as I can't really be bothered with the faff and having to butter up salespeople/buy things I don't want to get the one I want. Plenty of other stuff I am perfectly happy with as an alternative.
But there are plenty of people who MUST have a Submariner or GT series new, and so this all works.
As for the company valuation benefits of having products people wait for, and truly controlling supply and demand? Porsche and Rolex have it nailed.

Agreed it does work currently. I’m not sure long term. If other nice cars go online, then I think things may change. All guess work though.

I had the same response from the OPC initially when i first tried to order a GT4 having never bought a new Porsche before, i kept on at my local dealer for a few weeks and eventually they offered me an allocation. (i was the first that came to mind when a cancelled order came up.)
My GT4 arrives on the 1st of September so its just shows its always worth trying. I did ask if buying the GT4 would help my standing with Porsche and help towards the next step up. ( GT3 or GT4RS) I was told this would be highly unlikely.
Whilst I may not like the "buying s
t you don't want to get things you do," approach (I think Ferrari have that nailed with the "buy the used car you don't want want to, maybe, be able to order the new one you actually want') one have to see it from the manufacturer's perspective, as part of their wider business model to sell cars and preserve brand.
I bought a GT4 last year having:
- sent the dealer a letter of interest in 2016 and
- bought nothing new from Porsche before
I suspect covid uncertainty helped (ordering a new car last July felt moderately reckless) as did UK allocations for Q4 (I think more cars were allocated in case import duties came in at the start of 2021.
As a buyer, I accept that the manufacturer / dealer has better customers than me. Had I needed to buy another car to get the car I bought I wouldn't have done so; I fancied the car (and rather like it) but in no way had to have it. Conversely, were I a better customer (who had bought numerous vehicles over a number of years), I would hope that the dealer considered that before offering a slot to an unknown.

What makes you think the people that get GT allocations don’t “really want a car to use”?
It’s not fair to say that people that can’t get one are all enthusiasts and people that get one are all flippers/speculators.
Agreed but sadly that number seems to be diminishing. The overs has created a new type of buyer that want a slice of the cake.
Bring back the good old days when a special like the 987Spyder could be bought for discount and not overs or a gt3 that had depreciation
I’ve had a deposit down on a Spyder since Jan and knew at the time that best estimate build would be Q4 or Q1 next year.
Had an email this week confirming it definitely won’t be this year as they’d got all their allocations.
A bit of ringing round and it does seem like the Spyders are coming in tiny numbers. I’ve asked for a bit of reassurance from my opc as to where I am on their list and I’ll have to take their word as true.
I have heard from a reliable source that production will continue through 2022 so I’ll just keep my fingers crossed.
Oh and I have no Porsche history beyond a couple of enquiries and just being very pleasant and normal when dealing with the sales team.. no talking bull**** at them for hours on end, just a decent chat about what I’m after and my background along with an offer to go for a high spec build.
I visited my OPC yesterday and placed an order for a GT4 and a Macan GTS, delivery for the GT4 is January 22 with the Macan not due until 2023!
I have a reasonable Porsche buying history but not from the OPC I have purchased these two cars from, I just built a relationship with them, asked the question about a GT4 and was given an allocation.
I think they can tell the enthusiasts versus the flippers/speculators, I’m very much an enthusiast and will enjoy both cars when they arrive.

Not sure, think they have a long list of customers and are struggling to commit to it being any earlier. I’m hoping it may be Q4 but they said they received notification last Friday that there will be little deliveries until 2023

I was chatting to a GT4 owner at a Porsche meet a few weeks ago.
It was his first Porsche, bought new, and he didn't mention any bribes...
He kept saying how he loved it and loved driving it ... and how he was very careful of not doing too many miles/ use it too much "as it impacts value and very mileage sensitive".
I think the way second hand values are holding up on these cars influences the owners. So it's maybe not just a different type of buyer, but buyers feeling the pressure as we are all greedy - and seeing the potential for your asset to be worth more than what you paid for it is enticing.

Totally with you. I have never had such a car but I would drive it and have fun like every other car I have had. If not the only person who benefits is the next owner. Life is too short! Have a nice car but enjoy it.
He kept saying how he loved it and loved driving it ... and how he was very careful of not doing too many miles/ use it too much "as it impacts value and very mileage sensitive".
If thats the mindset they are a proper numpty and have to ask why the heck they bought it , its a thing to be enjoyed and its only money which as far as im aware is only useful while you are here

Having said that its clearly his car and his choice how it is used and anyone thinking they can dictate how someone elses car is used is basically in gestapo numptyland themselves.
Every car has its optimal usage on certain occasions thats why I don't generally use some of mine on long motorway runs where possible. A pointless exercise. May as well rack up miles in a snotter keeping the best driving miles and roads for more interesting cars.

Me too, mines nearly at 4,000 miles. Its my 2nd/weekend car and would also normally do an annual Euro hoon. This year I have done a Lakes and Wales trip in it. Amazing car, get out and drive it while you still can!!

It's his car and his choice. I find it really weird though. If you enjoy driving it, do so. If you can't afford some value decline, buy a cheaper one and drive it.
I am fiscally conservative and would never buy a car i can't afford to write off - let alone one where i can afford depreciation.
But then you pay your monies and make your choices.

I think you might be putting words my mouth there , I wasnt suggesting/telling anyone what they should do , just that worrying that driving a car will reduce its value is very silly because you are never going to enjoy it and to repeat its only money
Often times its people that cant afford or don't have mileage sensitive cars that say "if I had one I'd drive it loads".
Typically Porsche GT cars are not daily drivers. I don't commute in mine or take it to the supermarket as there's no joy in that. My comfy SUV is way more suited to and appropriate for those tasks. This means the GT is a weekend toy and doesn't do many miles but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. The depreciation cost of miles on the GT is not the reason it doesn't do many miles.

Think you are totally right that these cars are not daily drivers. I think though when someone tells you 'i would like to drive it more but i don't because of miles' we are not talking about supermarket runs.

I'd argue they are ok as dailys, particularly in PDK for. Although I'll be travelling around 5k PA, I'll be enjoying it whenever I can!
I use my GT4 most days for general duties and also long runs plus work journeys. And yes it’s even got a manual

My GT3 is tucked up in the garage under a cover, the daily driver SUV is parked on the street ready to go. It’s just more convenient and my work colleagues don’t think I’m a t

Customers of GT cars and other equivalents do drive it for the drama for one for a better word than just as a track toy. Counting the days down for build completion.

So you managed to place a deposit & get an allocation for a slot this last week?
Was that a cancelled order? Surely there would have been people with deposits in line before you?

I’ve been talking about one for a while now so they have known about my interest for a long long time. No idea where I was in the Q

Don't forget the school drop
, but I think the next step is to get the link up sorted amongst us!
I’m happy to be correct but I believe they get their allocations ‘per quarter’ rather than monthly.
Not sure how many weeks before the new quarter they are informed.
I remember my OPC showing me a few years ago. It’s very much… Week 41 - 2x Taycan, Week 42 - 1x 911, Week 43 - 2x Macan, Week 44 - zero, Week 45 - 1x 911 Turbo etc.

2023 for any Macan is ridiculous. I’ve been offered a GTS slot from 2 different OPCs for an October build, this was after expressing interest in the car in the hope of securing one for Q1 2022, if 2023 suits you then fine, but otherwise they are taking the mick and it’s time to shop around.

Was that recently? I’ve had a deposit on a Macan GTS since June snd still no date. Really need the car 1Jan 22 starting to look a forlorn hope, or time to try another dealer and recover my deposit?
Similar to others, I enquired with a local OPC about a 718 GT4 before they came out and was told (as someone who has never bought a new or any Porsche) that I had zero chance. I then specd a 718 Spyder in early 2020 and sent to a different OPC who I had a conversation with and was told I had a reasonable chance of an allocation. I was told I would be put on a list, then never heard back and never chased as my priorities changed. 18 months later and a new sports car a possibility again I placed a deposit on a Lotus Emira and thought I’d check in on the Spyder situation - this was a few weeks ago. They had no record of me being on any list but were happy for me to place a £5k refundable deposit and told I’m no.4 on their list - was also told that they had 6 deposits for GT4s. Have filled in all the necessary forms but been given no guarantee of an allocation. My expectations are very low given comments on this thread and others re GT allocations (which is fine as can’t afford both Spyder and Emira) - happy to update here.

To be honest I’m fine with it and I would be surprised if you actually got your car in the time frames you say. I obviously believe you with regards what you’ve been told but I have no reason to not believe my OPC. I have too good a relationship with them and purchase history for them to take the mick.

I can only go off what I was told, maybe it might come sooner maybe it won’t. I’m happy for my GT4 to get pushed back to March as I won’t use it in the winter and I’m relaxed about when the Macan comes. As the saying goes patience is a virtue.

Yes, within the last 3 weeks. I placed the deposit in June so a similar situation to yourself. Main issue/dilemma I have is my 718 GT4 should be arriving in November, two new Porsches in the same month is not what I want!!

Totally agree…… it’s sort of a I’ll believe it when I see it situation, but TBH as long as I get a car I’m happy.
Possibly a very stupid question, but I am making the wild assumption that the Porsche configurator doesn't include OTR costs? Yet I can't seem to find anywhere on the website or in the literature that states them...
VED is £1,910, but what are the Porsche OTR costs for the GT4 I need to factor in?
