Happened Saturday afternoon, billowing cloud of white smoke. Parked and waited for the tow truck. Idled the motor, more smoke, mostly coming from the passenger side tail pipe. No warning lights, no engine shutdown. I had my 05
Boxster
S towed to the dealer in Walnut Creek CA. 43K miles, warranty expired in May 09. In May 09 I had a water pump failure, car smelled hot, no power steering, no engine shut down. Drove less than a city block, slowly. Car towed to same dealer in Walnut Creek. Water pump replaced under warranty. Could my current problem be related to the water pump failure? This is a pretty big grey area, IMO. I read Nathan's post, and this sounds like the same deal. The white smoke from the right side tail pipe leads me to guess the right head gasket is blown.
I assume you have an aftermarket exhaust??!
Milltek headers and catback have been on for 30K miles, Softronic tune. Never tracked, like Nathan's car. Should I retune the ECU before the dealer looks at the car? Anyone know of a N. CA shop to do a 3.8 transplant? There are several in S. CA. Gemballa does, Motormeister has a rebuild kit to bore out the 3.2 to 3.8, for $10K Planet-9 classifieds had a DFI 3.8 w/2K miles for $15K, shipped from Austria. Gemballa has X-51 for $20K, 3.8 DFI for $30K.
I cannot help much in that, but I do recommend flashing back to stock!
If your car is 2005, DFI is almost imposible to transplant. Check with someone that has done it, otherwise you might have a very expensive paper weight. As far as software I understand Scott from Softronics have done several transplants say 3.8 x51 to
Boxster
or Cayman, but not a DFI to a pre 2008 car.
Good luck
Hmmm, actually I thought Scott announced a while ago that he does DFI transplants. Not sure though!
Yep, softronic will turn your paperweight into a tiger in your tank. Gemballa does DFI.
Yes the waterpump failure could have made the headgasket fail at a later date. Head gaskets can fail all of the sudden or slowly, over heating is a huge factor in failed head gaskets.
Try real....real hard not to drive the car if the car is overheated.

White smoke?? Are you sure is isn't oil/air separator?
Re: Another blown head gasket...not
Dayum! You're good! beach 987 wins...a box of Pepperidge Farm cookies. That's what i gifted Eric at Michael Stead Porsche. Too early to be certain, but his comments were that gasket failure cause billowing steam, a/o separator white smoke. The test is to try to remove the oil filler cap while the engine is running. The failed a/o separator creates vacuum which makes this very difficult. Where do I get a Motorsport a/o separator? Doh! Do a search. New upgraded a/o separator $67.08 #99610702601 Suncoast. :thanks:
That is what we are here for. Glad to hear it was the a/o separator. I've heard they are not too difficult to replace yourself. Let us know how it goes.
What is a dark smell? Does it smell like fear?
