Checking the specs, it looks like the 718 is only 15kg heavier than the 918 - less than was reported in some early reviews.

Press release just out. (Get your 981 orders in quickly) "Porsche Boxster and Cayman: New model series 718 The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman – these will be the new names of the two-door mid-engine sports cars from Porsche effective with the 2016 model changeover. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are showing more similarities – both visual and technical. In the future, both will have equally powerful four-cylinder flat engines with turbocharging. The Roadster will be positioned at a higher price level than the Coupé – as is done for the 911 models. Porsche will introduce the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman over the course of 2016. The 718 model series is a continuation of the proven four-cylinder concept and the history of distinguished Porsche sports cars. The latest example is the 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car, which also has a highly-efficient, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with just 2 litres of displacement. So, not only did Porsche finish first and second in the 24 hours of Le Mans, but most recently it also won the manufacturer’s and driver’s championship titles in the WEC World Endurance Championship. With these victories, the 919 Hybrid has opened up the prospects for the performance potential of future sports car engines from Porsche. History of the 718 Four-cylinder flat engines have a long tradition at Porsche – and they have enjoyed incredible success. In the late 1950s, the 718 – a successor to the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder – represented the highest configuration level of the four-cylinder flat engine. Whether it was competing at the 12-hour race in Sebring in 1960 or at the European Hill Climb Championship that ran between 1958 and 1961, the Porsche 718 prevailed against numerous competitors with its powerful and efficient four-cylinder flat engine. The 718 took first place three times between 1959 and 1960 at the legendary Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans race 1958, the 718 RSK with its 142-hp four-cylinder engine scored a class victory." https://porschenewsroom.s3.amazonaws.com/porsche_n... Its here too... http://www.carscoops.com/2015/12/porsche-renames-n...

POST 3Original post

Not much we didn't know... The PR starts and I'm almost convinced that I want 4 pots and a turbo lol No doubt the new car will be faster both top speed and 0-62. To early to really say if it will be more desirable than a straight six........

POST 4Original post

Can't just be me that thinks "4 pot 2.0 turbo", just like every VW, dull!!!!!!!!!!!! Burning question I guess is whether they'll retain an N/A in the line up, or whether they deem customers of the base model cars even care?!?! After all, they've made a very definite switch with the 911, during the facelift model.

POST 5Original post

I suppose the big question for me is whether to stick with the current CGTS on order, or change it for the new model. I know I will prefer the flat 6 but most owners wont be bothered if the turbo 4 is faster and more economical. It shouldn't really bother me but I haven't got an endless pit of money and I will want to sell in 3 years time.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is an air-cooled to water cooled moment in history. In a couple of years time, people won't care that the flat 6 is gone. The new turbo 4 will be really quick, torquey and efficient. It might even sound ok (maybe). The BMW M3 NA purists even have to acknowledge that the new F80 is better than the old car in almost every way, despite not sounding as good. Flat 6 for me though. Just compare the sound of the new 991.2 vs the outgoing 991.1 GTS on the configurator. I know which one I would choose, no matter what the torque or efficiency gave me...

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Klippie said: I think your very wrong with this mate. you're* Perhaps, but the loss of a V10 didn't hurt the M5 sales, nor V8 the M3 (although I miss my E90 M3). The loss of an air cooled F6 didn't hurt the 996 much either. Ferrari aren't struggling to sell the 488, nor VW the Golf R. I don't think the public will care (we purists might) as long as the 718 puts out decent torque and power and is efficient - which it will be. Edited by JLZ78 on Thursday 10th December 19:58

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

anonymous said: [redacted] Fair enough, but your view isn't the unanimous opinion across the motoring world. The 'better' tag can mean different things to different people. Some go by steering feel, some go with power and some go with just lap times. It's a pretty broad brush, but as far as the manufacturers go, the newer generations cars are 'better', but not necessarily more engaging to enthusiasts. I'm still in the F6 camp for the Pork, and until convinced otherwise, always will be.

POST 10Original post

Budweiser said: To early to really say if it will be more desirable than a straight six........ Which to the best of my knowledge Porsche have never offered? Think you mean a flat 6.

POST 11Original post

I don't know about anyone else but personally I have zero interest in a Cayman with anything less than a flat six inside. Who cares if it has a huge wedge of torque and power the car is not a Porsche without that classic engine. And the bloody number is stupid...what the hell is Porsche thinking about.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Possibly because after 15 plus years of being the base model Porsche, they are now starting to to charge a premium over the Croc. You don't often see that happening in marketing. This whole press release today does smack of a huge propaganda push from Porsche to soften us up. I would say this is a bold move given VW's current plight and the Porsche brand history, but this decision was likely taken way before the emissions scandal.

POST 13Original post

There is nothing classic about a 6 cylinder mid-engine Porsche. Look back at '50's era 356s and 912s: 4 cylinders, air cooled, rear engine. 6 cylinder water cooled came years after and, after only 20 years, can hardly be called classic. To be truly classic, you'd get polluting and less than 100HP. Want to give up your disk brakes? Traction control? Anti-lock? A/C? Heated seats? Radial tires? Rustproofing? Bluetooth? 12 volt electrical systems? Go back far enough and you give up defrost and even heat. Want to set points, gaps, adjust valves every thousand miles? Think that would sell? Go drive one! My favorite Porsche to drive had a mid-engine 4 cylinder air cooled 85HP, wasn't really a Porsche but harkened back to the 4 cylinder days when Porsche just had VW engines tweaked. Nothing classic about it. It was also a piece of rusted out metal after only 2 years.

Who cares if it has a huge wedge of torque and power the car is not a Porsche without that classic engine. And the bloody number is stupid...what the hell is Porsche thinking about. That's what many said when they started putting kettles in Porsches. I am with you here, but it won't be the end of the world and they will probably sell more. Air cooled Cayman, that would super cool

POST 15Original post

Is it just me that imagines the market for Boxsters being totally different to the one for Caymans? I understand the comments about the general public not caring much about what's under the hood so long as it does the job well but isn't that going to be a lot more true for an "average" Boxster owner than their Cayman equivalent? JLZ78 said: This is an air-cooled to water cooled moment in history. In a couple of years time, people won't care that the flat 6 is gone. Worth noting that while Porsche are selling plenty of water cooled 911s long term values have gone stupid for everything up to the 993 model whereas the 996 has had little more than a mild knockon effect. Given the rave reviews for the current model Cayman i suspect the new version will do nothing but support values on the one it replaces.

Mark my words.....15:51 on the 11th Dec 2015 Porsche will make an 'RSK' version of the Boxster 718 (in the same vein as the RS versions of the GT cars) and the world will fall at its feet. The end Oh, and MrDemon will state that the 987 Spyder is an all round better option for a driving enthusiast

POST 17Original post

Well if 4 pot lumps are the future it looks like I'll be holding onto my 3.4 987.2 for many years to come, it does everything I want anyway.

Porsche are masters at resurrecting historical names. It's all marketing/branding but things like the Clubsport, Spyder, GTS, RS and R names can be pulled out and we all go weak at the knees.

OK, the acceleration from low revs was good, and the Blap... Blap... Blap... at full acceleration, but otherwise, dull. My 2003 E46 330ci, which I had for nine years, was much preferable if a little slower 0-60. It had linear acceleration, a great sound, plus RWD, just as my Cayman does now. Phew! Managed to get back in a 6cyl, NA, RWD car before they all die out!

POST 20Original post

They will stick a VW T6 van engine in the next Boxster and name it a 924.......chortle

POST 21Original post

Boxsters sell better than Caymans because you are getting more car, the convertible option, for less cash. That was always a con, thought up in the Wiedeking era, to charge more for a car that cost them less to build. It's not rocket science. The Cayman attracts us petrolheads for all the good reasons but the corporate types are going to buy the cheaper car. Maybe it's time to accept that. I'm sure the 718 will be an interesting car, but I am certainly not planning to change my BGTS, and I would expect the residuals on these to be pretty good. The car itself has power, spec and quality far ahead of my old 986320, way beyond what the original Boxster set out to be - it is a serious grunty sports car and I think that the GTS models, as well as the GT4 and Spyders, are a high point in Porsche production and probably worth holding onto. I also think that the current 981 generation of naturally aspirated 6 cylinder cars are among the last Porsche products which will make sense with a manual gearbox. That also gives them a value. Technology and design move forward and I wish them well with this but I have no regrets about my choice. Edited by cardigankid on Saturday 12th December 23:53

Holy moley 718 Boxster starts at £41,739 - up £2k over 981 718 Boxster S starts at £50,695 - nearly £3k on 981. With 'spec' the Boxster S will easily be a £63k car. Not sure I'm in love with the styling. Looks a bit BMW Z8 to me. Think the 'Porsche' logo on the moving rear spoiler is a bit gimmicky.

Cmoose very true. My mrs is expecting our first child in a few months. luckily in a fortunate enough position to either spend £20k second hand or go for new (on PCP) £70k max and get another 4 seater car to ferry the family around in. honestly was looking to try and find something to complement the GTS and retain some of the fun in a 4 seat motor. all the new cars out just don't float my boat, so keep going back to 2nd hand just to find something with some personality. honestly at in disappear. It's progress I guess, for me the front lower apron and air intakes look very dull compared to the later GTS front end. For me the Boxster is all about the noise of that flat 6 as it tears round to 7k plus with the lid down, sounds soooo good ! So flat toned 4 cyclinder drone is not for me, so I am out on this one.

All the panels are different except for the trunk lid and rear lid, but I am not sure on the latter as I read that earlier today elsewhere. Hard to spot the differences though.

POST 41Original post

Looks like a 7.5% increase on the Boxster price. Assuming positioning changes I would guess the Cayman price increase would be about half of that. 300hp is slightly more than I was expecting, not fond of the back, the band reminds me of those odd looking Honda Civics.

Akajak said: fast though; the GTS (PDK) will be knocking on a 4 sec 0-60 Yeah, but it runs out of guts at 4500 rpm, just as a NA starts to get exciting. While the purists will hate the styling and philosophy of a turbocharged flat four, this thing will sell in spades, despite the price hike. Sub 10 secs to 100 from a 4 cyl engine is pretty impressive. I expect that unlike Mitsubishi Evo mentalists of the past which had similar power outputs from Turbo 4's , the 718 doesn't need a service every 3 minutes. I think the styling is trying to appeal to non European tastes and to my eyes it isn't as interesting or eye catching as the 981.

POST 48Original post

I notice that the 718 has appeared on the configurator, replacing the Boxster (notice not 718 Boxster). No links/details yet - but does that imply that you can't order a 981 Boxster any more?

POST 49Original post

Correct - no Boxster 981s. Checking the specs, it looks like the 718 is only 15kg heavier than the 918 - less than was reported in some early reviews.

I actually quite like the upgraded interior - prefer the PCM 4 piece and overall think it is an OK evolution. The exhaust sounds crap though - when you listen to it on their website - if that's the best it can sound then that is the major problem. However its quick, fast and economical - so it will sell in spades as others have said. Such a shame about the engine - oh well times are a changing......

POST 53Original post

Yes and that will be the PSE option as well, how crap will the standard exhaust sound.

POST 54Original post

I was miffed at missing out on spyder, but looking at specs for 718.well still early days, but gts when it comes will be even quicker.the cabin on 718 looks excellent.updated front and rear lights look excellent.rear bumper and badge details look excellent.still take a spyder if one became available (new to spec) not so bothered now though.gts 718 when it comes is performance wise going to be a stonking bit of kit.

POST 55Original post

It's on the German configurator and although it has PCM the Nav module will cost circa £1200. I expect the 718 Cayman to now have the same power as it will price slightly lower. The future Gts in a year on so most likely have 360 hp and if any future Gt/ Spyder models then 400 hp and Pdk! Will it be f6 na or f4 turbo ? I just cannot see them using the current f6 in 3.8 or the 3.0 in the 981.2 so it's either turbo and circa £70k or engine shared with gt3 and £100k+ Personally if I am to buy a 4 cylinder turbo I would rather buy a hot hatch! The only thing I can see better in these new cars is the steering which is only 10 % better than old 981 but most likely on par or just below with the current gt4/ SPYDER, PCM might be improved but it's not what I buy a porsche for! The futures bleak!

POST 56Original post

Yep, 718 GTSs will be quick and definitely four pot turbos. Glad I've got a 6 pot coming though.

Well I have a Golf R Estate, my specs are 2lt turbo, 300hp, DSG (read PDK) gear box, 0-60 in 5.1 (the hatch does sub 5) Recognise those specs anywhere???? The only problem whilst it’s mighty fast, and very well built and practical, it is BORING, which is fine for a daily driver I guess, it’s more exciting than most. However, the 718 just seems a convertible version of the Golf, and I can’t see how they will inject any excitement in to it. I fear though, everybody else thinks the Golf R is the most amazing ever, so I’m sure this 718 will sell in bucket loads to people who want it to be fast and look good. For me, I’ll be looking for second hand BGTS until they announce what they do with the GT4/Spyder/GT4 RS hopefully all of which will still be NA

Info available on German configurator. No GT silver available, but you can have Lava Orange with a red top... Interestingly, no Carmine either and only 4 metallic colours. Rhodium, Graphite Blue (which is nice), Rhodium and Black. This is a good specced 718 Boxster S. Rhodium silver (check out the red reflectors!!), Carrera S wheels in platinum, PDK, PASM, Active mounts, Sports Chrono, Sports exhaust, leather, Nav, Bose etc. The price? €91,214.30 (about £69k) Porsche code on Porsche.de PHH3CVK3 Edited to add: My German isn't too hot, but I don't think that includes a leather interior (dashboard etc) - and Digital radio STILL isn't standard even with NAV Module. Makes the GT4 options look reasonable. Think we know how VW are digging themselves out of a their financial hole. I waited donkeys on a spyder and didn't get one.the specials and GT cars are difficult to get. Was waiting on 718 coming, booked a flight and ticket to Geneva show to have a gander. Not even going to bother waiting to see 718 in flesh,Porsche are bloody brilliant at this evolutionary stuff.once the journo magazine drives start I have no doubt the 718 will still be pound for pound the best value roadster available..easy

POST 62Original post

I love the WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! too. Been there, done that with 4cyl turbo engine in my TTS, although the Porsche one will be far superior in tech terms I'm sure. Just specced up a Boxster 718 base to my 981 Cayman base spec and £1k less at £53k. 718 Cayman should be £2-3K less as it's moved under the Boxster in 718 form. 981 Cayman may be a future classic having been built for only 3 years in relatively small numbers compared to the 981 Boxster?

POST 63Original post

spareparts said: 718 looks mighty expensive with a very wide range of pricey options. Just priced up a 718 Boxster S in a 'nice spec' and it came to 69k! That is as much as a 'full spec' 981 Spyder cost brand new. Nearly 70k for an unlimited mass production depreciating 2.5L 4 cylinder convertible is madness! Just did the same and it comes to pretty much the same price as the outgoing Cayman to a similar spec.

POST 64Original post

I think pcm is now £1k cheaper or so. Did they reduce it on the 997 in advance on making it free on the 991 as well?

POST 65Original post

RSVP911 said: Just for the sake of clarity - you're not a fan then Ha! Well let's be honest. Is it loads better than my old 986 in almost every way? Yes. If I had fifty large burning a hole in my pocket and I needed a 2 seat roadster, would I buy the 718? Probably. Are some of those photos at certain angles a bit unkind to the car? Yes, head on its not very pretty and the lights are too "triangular" for me (same as a 986 looks a bit odd from exactly side on with the roof up...it gets a bit Alfa GTV). It's probably because I'm turning into an old fart but that beetle/scooby engine is the deal breaker for me. On the configurator sound generator thing I genuinely winced...it just sounded like a very poorly engine! I'm sure it will sell by the bucket load, I just would have preferred a "992" Boxster with a 6 pot and a little 718 spyder type roadster thingy with the 4 pot. But no doubt I'll get all excited when I see one for the first time. And I'll also feel all smug next time I get the WAAAAAAAAA in my old thing that cost 10% of the 718. One more thing, is it a seven-one-eight like a nine-nine-seven or a seven-eighteen like a nine-eighteen?

POST 66Original post

Mario149 said: I think pcm is now £1k cheaper or so. Did they reduce it on the 997 in advance on making it free on the 991 as well? It's a bit more complicated than that. You used to have to spec SPP and phone module as well as PCM (circa £3000) to get the functionality you get now if you spec the nav module. So you option price is more like £2000 cheaper - but they have put up the list price - so really it's no change. Except those who were happy with base spec before will now have to pay a couple of thousand more for the basic car. Just Porsche giving with one hand and taking with other.

Hard-Drive said: One more thing, is it a seven-one-eight like a nine-nine-seven or a seven-eighteen like a nine-eighteen? It's seven-eighteen, like nine-eleven. 718 is the formal model series name. Mario149 said: Twinfan said: I'm guessing the Boxster and Cayman names are going to be dropped in the years to come, and we'll have the model classed as a 718 and 718 convertible with 4-pot turbos. Like a mini 911 range.... It's happening already. 718 is all over the Porsche website, they only seem to chuck the word Boxster in when they absolutely have to. I'm party to seeing how much decision-making goes on for the trivial copy on the national-scale website the company I work for, it's insane. Given how obsessive Porsche are, they'll have this 718 branding and copy thing mapped out like you wouldn't believe. How to use what names when, how to transition the brand, timescales etc etc etc Looks like we were right. To quote a Porsche email I received this morning: "The 718 nomenclature brings the Boxster in line with all other mid and rear-engined sports cars, using a number to designate the series and a name to denote the model."

POST 68Original post

could a 718 with a flat 4 motor sound like this with a decent sports exhaust fitted ? If so as its turbo and the chance of a cheap software remap to gain 60bhp and a heap load of torque should easily put it into 918 spyder / gt4 territory ? is there a chance they could be onto a winner after all ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59dHABgEAIw Edited by JeffC on Thursday 28th January 09:03

Just had a quick play with the configurator for the S model. Apparently no longer possible to have wheels painted the same as body colour, the smokers package is no longer free, no sign of colour options for the instrument dials - and I couldn't find an option for PSE? Also, the next step up from the standard sound system is Bose. They seem to have taken out a level there.

POST 70Original post

Yep, I noticed all that too. No PSE is strange - obviously not as easy to tweak things like that with a turbo engine?

I really like the look of the car and what tweaks they have done to the front and rear lighting. I do not like the Porsche lettering over the rear. does anyone know if this can be removed ? The 718 lettering removal is an easy box tick. My spec comes out at £73k without buckets and PTS so i assume £5k more over a 981. This is about a £40k difference between a similarly equipped C2S coupe. I think they have really nailed the light design of the rear, its a big step forward. The front top-spec light clusters don't look right but they are configurable to look less fussy as you could on the GT3. Don't mind the sound signature of the new engine as long as the steering feel has been improved over the 981.
