The tiptronic was having trouble changing gears and was sometimes getting stuck in neutral before shifting to the next gear. The condition wasn't noticable at first, but gradually developed.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well I finally picked up my 02 C2 on Saturday. On Monday it was back, needs a new transmission.Only 300km (180 miles) on the odometer. The tiptronic was having trouble changing gears and was sometimes getting stuck in neutral before shifting to the next gear. The condition wasn't noticable at first, but gradually developed.
Is there such a thing as a lemon Porsche? Is this a taste of things to come?
It is my first Porsche.....can't wait to get it back, those first kms were a blast! The dealer couldn't be more apologetic, but the rental Isuzu isn't the same as the 996!
Just a follow up...
I just got a call from the dealer. He said that a new transmission would take 3 weeks to come from Germany. He offered to take a transmission out of another new 996 they have on the lot and put that in my car. Should I wait for the 'new' transmission or take one from a car they have now? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Bummer.
Consider waiting if the Dealer will provide you with a "suitable" alternate means of transportation. Please note that, no offense to Joe Isuzu, an Isuzu is not "acceptable".
If the dealer has nothing else, suggest that they consult Porsche directly, surely the trany can be air freighted in sooner than 3 weeks!!
In todays world you can get almost anything you want by tomorrow the question is just how much $.
If you exhaust those possibilities then I personally would not have to many qualms in having them swap trannys. Car is under warranty after all. Downside is that removing and reinstalling increases the likelyhood that something might be either missed or damaged during removal.
Good luck

It's a great car but unfortunatly things can and do happen. Don't let this get you down!!
Sorry to hear of your troubles. Despite the trans. problem, there is no reason to believe your 996 is a lemon. However, I am a little surprised that the dealer offered to canibalize an other car on his lot. I would be royally pissed if I bought the other car they used as a parts car. A little suspect on the dealer.
Do not know lemon laws in Japan (do they even exist), but in my state (NJ) bad transmission and over three weeks out of service would qualify under Lemon Law. I would imagine you could pressure Porsche for a better resolution. <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />
BigJohn,
Best of luck on the tranny. Just curious, is your p-car right-hand drive? You're living in a great place for driving - I've done the drive from Iwakuni to Hiro many times & often wished it was in something other than a little van w/12" wheels!
Brandon,
Yeah, my car is right hand drive. Hard to get over here, go figure! You are right about the roads around here, can't wait to get my wheels back. If you find yourself in Iwakuni again in the future let's go for a spin!

I am surprised they would not "undo" the deal and put you in a new car....
Good Luck
