Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Result: they had to recover me and loan me a nice new Cayman whilst I got the coil packs (2 of) replaced under warranty.

So the dealer says the spark plugs need replaced and I should replace the coil packs as "they look like they're on their way out" at the same time plus a couple of covers which are corroded.

They certainly are although they will only replace failed packs and not those that look "on their way out".

I would try to get them replaced first on the basis that it will obviously cost Porsche less to do it now than recover you and give you a loan car later.

I have discussed the preventative approach with the OPC however they have said Porsche is absolutely black and White about this so if the coils haven't failed they won't replace them.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So the dealer says the spark plugs need replaced and I should replace the coil packs as "they look like they're on their way out" at the same time plus a couple of covers which are corroded. I've been quoted £385 all in for the job. Should I take the hit on the coil packs now or wait till they really do fail?
Personally I would try and get them to replace them now under warranty given what they have advised. If they won't, and they may well not, then I would wait until they fail, make use of the Porsche Assist recovery and loan car service and get them exchanged under warranty. But that is me.
I would try to get them replaced first on the basis that it will obviously cost Porsche less to do it now than recover you and give you a loan car later.
I guess it also depends on you and what value you put on your own time as obviously waiting for recovery etc when they do fail will take a little time.

I have discussed the preventative approach with the OPC however they have said Porsche is absolutely black and White about this so if the coils haven't failed they won't replace them. Crazy isn't it?
Crazy indeed. I had exactly the same conversation, with the same outcome. Result: they had to recover me and loan me a nice new Cayman whilst I got the coil packs (2 of) replaced under warranty. Then they did the rest at annual service a couple of months later (again under warranty).
It's not the OPC decision as Porsche will not pay them for the work. I agree with you that it seems short sighted but what can you do?
If you can afford the inconvenience of the recovery / loan vehicle I wouldn't pay to get something that is covered under the warranty replaced yourself but ultimately it's your time so therefore it's your call.
Good luck either way
