I bought a used 2008 CS last week. Once I started driving it, I noticed some sounds. I have 90 days on a dealer warranty, so if this is an IMS issue/engine internals issue then I want to address it soon.
Got it inspected at a local porsche dealer, their state/used inspection came back good, but I don't think they went deep into diagnosing the sound.

It sounds like it could be a loose heatshield, but it only happens when in gear under throttle. Revving with the clutch in at a stop, or at speed does not reproduce the issue.
Should I get under their with a rubber mallet and tap stuff? If I bring it back to the dealer, should I get a compression test? blackstone analysis? etc.
[EDIT]
Not that a porsche forum is the best place for legal advice, but the verbiage of the warranty is:
any defect, malfunction, combination of defects of defects or malfunctions, that impairs its safety or use for a period of...
Does this mean that the car actually needs to break down before they cover anything?
Loose heat shields are a known problem so worth getting underneath and having a tap around. If not that it could be a catalytic converter starting to break up. Either way, since you have a warranty I would be getting to the bottom of the problem before it expires.
...was not able to play the video you linked
Here is the youtube clip directly.

first off...the engine sounds awesome
secondly, I am no expert, but here are my two cents...checked out the video...there is a ton of muffled background noise that's making it hard to make out the raspy sound at low RPM. The 5500rpm noise definitely sounds like a rattle that could be coming from the exhaust assembly...I'd start checking the clamps/bolts/nuts at the muffler tip and then move to the O2 sensor and catalysts. While under the car, I'd also look at the axles/CV joint clamps/boots.
Regarding the car not making the rattle noise with clutch in, I had a similar problem with my exhaust tip after putting it back post clutch replacement. I had simple forgotten to fasten a nut. The car did not make the noise when it was not moving. From my experience, these parts of the car are pretty tight in terms of how solidly they sit. I might take some force with a rubber hammer to gain any meaningful insight; nothing destructive, but purposeful.
Good luck!
Could one of the catalytic converters be coming apart internally? Have you brought it back to them or gotten a second opinion?
Good Luck
sounds like you have an aftermarket exhaust, and it sounds really really good. i would guess something is loose and resonating. let the shop do the work. take em for a ride in it. they can place mic's in there and listen for it to isolate.
good luck.
Thanks! It's actually, stock - I just found that driving without the carpet/sound padding on the heat shield makes the car sound way better.
There is definitely a noticeable rattle coming from the reinforcement plate. All the nuts are tightened up pretty good, so I think the next step is to take it off and see what's what.
Is there any resource to find the torque spec for these nuts, or should I just use my judgement with a socket wrench? Also, some of the bolts seem to be pretty stubborn once you get the nut off - should I just tap them out with a hammer?
Most nuts/bolts comprising the suspension have specific torque specs. I'd check the DIY articles here first...if you dont find what you need, send me a PM and I can dig out the appropriate chapters from official service manual and sent it to you in PDF.
Have the same 5500ish sound on my 08. I recently had the exhaust manifolds off and found a loose heatshield. Have not had a change to see if that was the cause.
