Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ran Mobil1 5w-40 for a few years and switched to Motul 5w-40 because the viscosity holds up a bit better than Mobil1.
Leading evidence: 'Run mobil1 5w-40' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'early bore scoring' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace i'm switching' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

PCA/LN suggests for DRIVEN oils, 996 should use their moly-formulated DT-40 (Synthetic 5W-40), but also suggests that if you are in a warm climate and suspect early bore scoring, that the use of FR-50 (Synthetic 5W-50) is more appropriate.

Suggestion
I'm not a chemist; I just play one on TV, so for my next oil change, I'm switching to DT40 and finally following Lake's advice.

Suggestion
Ive been using DT-40 for my last 4 oil changes, and I think its working well.

Suggestion
I started using Mobil 1 5w-40, but it was losing viscosity quickly.
Use of fr-50 (synthetic 5w-50) is more appropriate

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 1999 996 and was reviewing the 1999 Owner's Manual recommendations vs. indie shop advice, and advice found here. Lots of conflicts!
I am trying to follow Lake Speed Jr's principles of
RIGHT oil
RIGHT place
RIGHT time
RIGHT quantity
Factory specifies for synthetics:
SUMMER (>50F) 10W40, 15W-40. 15W-50
WINTER (<14F) 10W-40, 10W-30, 5W-30

DRIVEN also offers a GP-1 15W-40 (synthetic blend) oil but it has a lot more zinc...might be appropriate for drag racers needing more of this, but not of much use to the aluminum/aluminum issues with bore scoring.
So any recommendations are sought and most welcome. Trying to do this by "science; not speculation!"
Yeah, the Driven stuff is probably best.
I ran Mobil1 5w-40 for a few years and switched to Motul 5w-40 because the viscosity holds up a bit better than Mobil1. I have relatively high oil pressure in my 99 996 (1.5bar at idle, 5bar at 3k and above), so I stick with 5w40 unless Im tracking (5w/50 for that).
Motul has a 5w-40 Sport motor oil that seems to handle high temps better than their X-Cess Gen2 5w-40.
Ive been using DT-40 for my last 4 oil changes, and I think its working well. The ambient temps I drive in are between 30*F and 100*F. Im burning about a half-qt every 400-500 miles.
Before the DT-40, I was using Motul X-Cess Gen2 5w-40. It was fine, but I switched because I wanted the higher moly content from the DT-40.
The PCA oil thread above convinced me to switch to DI-40 for my next oil change.
I started using Mobil 1 5w-40, but it was losing viscosity quickly. Lake @ Speediagnostix confirmed that Mobil 1 5w-40 shears and drops viscosity down to 30 weight range with a minimal amount of miles (~1500 over 6mos in my case)
I switched to Amsoil 5w-40, but because it's low in moly, I supplemented it with LiquiMoly Ceratec.
I'm not a chemist; I just play one on TV, so for my next oil change, I'm switching to DT40 and finally following Lake's advice.
