Suggestion · Original poster

I was wondering if any of you can explain to me why there is such a wide range of used car pricing from different sources such as Edmunds (private party) vs Kelley's (private party)?

I once used three such books (Edmunds, Blue Book, and NADA) to compute the average market values for three cars.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was wondering if any of you can explain to me why there is such a wide range of used car pricing from different sources such as Edmunds (private party) vs Kelley's (private party)? I understand that Kelley's gives suggested retail pricing but shouldn't private party pricing be similar? Also, what do you guys think is a reasonable price range for MY2000 996 Coupe with 12.5k miles that has mid amount of options (6sp, litronics, psm, 18" turbo, dual power seats)?

POST 2Original post

Samster, Sorry to say the market isnt so good. I would say you would get someone to pay you mid50k and for a trade in mabye low 50k or high 40's. Good luck to you

POST 3Original post

I'm surprized that the MYs are selling that low. Maybe it's time to buy. I'm no expert on all the used car buyer's/seller's price guides, but I do consider them to be very rough as price guides. Part of the variation is due to the different assumptions, restrictions, adjustments, and other factors that each uses. These are usually detailed in the front. I once used three such books (Edmunds, Blue Book, and NADA) to compute the average market values for three cars. After doing all the different detailed adjustments required by each, the estimated values came out much closer than they were before. Also, that one value they give is supposed to be good for the whole 3 or 6-month time period? In short, they are very rough guides. For Porsche values I pay more attention to the market updates in Excellence. The purchase price of any particular car usually comes down to negotiation anyway. The price guides just give you some idea about how good or bad a deal you made or walked away from.
