Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

I am running the engine with IMS shaft bearing outer seal removed (splash lubrication) until my next clutch job, which is when I plan to install he DOF unit I have already purchased.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I'm attaching photo of failed IMSB. Note balls are still in the race. This thing sounded like a steel rod slapping around n tranny. Audible alert came uupon start up in the garage. It was gingerly driven another 7-8 miles. The inner stub was helping support and locate the shaft after balls moved. It had 145,000 miles. At this observation I started design of tools to enlarge flange hole with precision. Note the spalling of inner race is confined to about 180 degrees. I would suggest at 80,000 miles if you are behind the flywheel, loosen nut and turn the inner stub 180 degrees.

POST 2Original post

You were very fortunate it went noisy to give you some advance warning, and 145,000 miles is pretty good going.

POST 3Original post

Hi Sapientoni, I am running the engine with IMS shaft bearing outer seal removed (splash lubrication) until my next clutch job, which is when I plan to install he DOF unit I have already purchased. I have not been around the forum much lately. Is this a new problem you are having on the '06 Cayman? I read on one of your posts that you had purchased another Cayman; wondering which car you are having this problem with. Thx

POST 5Original post

Thanks for posting. As someone else pointed out, 145k isn't too bad. It's just too bad it happened at all. Best of luck with the design of the set new of tools! I'd be interested to see what you come up with. -Moto

I've posted pics of the factory bore and my modified bore hole here somewhere and on other sites as well. Equal in every respect except "MINE'S BIGGER, n SIZE does MATTER" in this case. LOL!
