Hi Guys,
I was about 10 miles into my journey home a couple of days ago, and decided to have a bit of fun for the last couple of miles, getting the car really hot and racy!
When I stopped off to fuel the car, upon starting the engine up again, the oil warning light came up. (it was only at 1 bar below optimum a couple of days ago)
I went back in and bought some more oil and put about a 3rd of a litre of
Castrol
5W-40 Edge in, now says its at optimum.
I'm concerned, however, that there's "yellow mayo" on the oil filler
cap
, and it was steaming.
Forums say its condensation from short runs, just like what I did on my way home; but, I'm still concerned it could something a bit more serious like the head gasket.
I checked the coolant once the car was cool, and it was bone dry, not a drop in there. I've added 1.75L of
Porsche
approved pre-mixed coolant, so now it says 'Max'.
Would these 2 issues be related? What damage could I have done to the engine? Obviously it's been without coolant for quite a while!
There was nothing under the car first thing this morning, however as I pulled up to work there were a few droplets of something on the floor.
What would you guys recommend I do? Just keep an eye on it, or prepare a savings fund for a new head gasket (or worse)?
Regards
SpazaB
Coolant in oil can impede lubrication. It might be pretty harmful for the engine, but I don't know for sure.
It may just be the 'normal'
Porsche
mayo-on-
cap
thing, but I would get it to a dealer pronto to have it checked out.
I called my local specialist (who have done all the work on the car since I've owned it) and they said just to keep an eye on it, but I'm not convinced to be honest.
I would clean all the mayo off the
cap
and anywhere else you can easily reach, make sure the oil and coolant levels are good, take it for a good drive of about 20-30 miles and once you return let everything cool down and check the levels and any presence of mayo again. If there is any indication of a falling coolant level and/or mayo, I would not drive it until it has been looked at more thoroughly. If things appear to be ok it just may be a coincidence.
Assuming you moved to car forward in a straight line, that puts your wet patch in the area of the header tank. Both the tank and the pressure
cap
are known to fail so you should have them checked asap.
The wet patch on the floor is where the right hand rear of the car was, before I moved it to take the picture.
My vote is for a leaking water pump.
I haven't checked if I have the new updated coolant
cap
, if I don't, I'll change that first and see if it makes a difference.
If I already have the
cap
, or the new
cap
doesn't work, I've had the car provisionally booked in for
next
Friday at a specialist.
Morning guys,
Quick update:
I went to check the part number for the
cap
last night. The car had been stationary for a few hours with no leaks, however when I took the
cap
off to check it, I heard the pressure release and checked under the car again, and there was a puddle.
I've ordered a new
cap
with the '04 part number anyway.
