That proves the spring has set(tled) and replacing it was the correct measure.
Leading evidence: 'correct measure' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'correct measure' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check whether the scavenging pumps are oriented correctly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Scavenge pump orientation is corrected, spring was replaced (new one shares the same part number but appears to be longer with the same number of turns and gauge).

The car has IMS solution and I changed the spin-on oil filter.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I'm working on a friend's 996.1 with a peculiar issue. Oil pressure on cold start tops at around 4.8 bar as per factory gauge and follows the 1 bar / 1000 rpm rule of thumb nicely when warm, up to 4 bar / 4000 rpm, above which oil pressure doesn't seem to want to go any higher. Oil pressure relief valve has been updated. We swapped the factor cluster with spares and the readings remain consistent. Sender unit was recently replaced. Should we start shimming the relief spring? Any idea would be appreciated!
Check whether the scavenging pumps are oriented correctly on each bank.
That would be my 1st port of call.
Was the spring too replaced with a new one when the oil pressure relief valve was updated?
If no improvement, you could consider going to a higher oil (hot) viscosity. Guessing there's a ...40 in there now, try ...50.
Scavenge pump orientation is corrected, spring was replaced (new one shares the same part number but appears to be longer with the same number of turns and gauge).
Currently on 10w40, but we will try a 5W50 soon.
There are two different oil bypass devices in this engine. The other is the filter bypass, so I would check that as well, maybe just replace it, as its cheap and easy to do.
The other thing to check is to drop the sump plate and inspect the pickup screen to make sure its free of any debris.
Question for the engine experts: would a broken tensioner leak oil badly enough to cause a drop of 1 bar?
The car has IMS solution and I changed the spin-on oil filter. I did have a scare when LN published the warning regarding Made-In-China batch of filters and made sure I changed to Baldwin BT223. No significant change in oil pressure afterwards.
No significant change in oil pressure was seen. I wonder if the spring rate is still the same before and after.
Spring rate is the same but for any given force the old spring would always be shorter by the same amount as the difference between the two when relaxed (I.e. at zero force).
Thus the opening through which the oil bleeds off is smaller with the new spring than with the old for a given pressure generated by the pump.

The oil pressure measurement on the M96/7 engine is a reading of the "oil flow resistance" ...
Oil flow resistance, is a measurement of several factors, bearing , cam, and lifters ect clearances.....oil viscosity/weight....and oil temp....all these are important in the total " oil flow 'resistance measurement/pressure"..
This is very important on the M96/7 especially because the Integrated Dry Sump system, send 60% of the oil flow to the crankshaft/rods , and 40% oil the oil flow to the heads, and when in a high-G turn of more than 1G , all the oil in the heads go to one side/pump, and reduces the returned oil by 20% ( only 1 pump returning oil ), leaving the usable oil in the sump 20% less during high-G turns..
So the total oil flow resistance/pressure is very important but is also a double edge sword....more flow = more bearing cooling, but too much flow in the wrong places can lead to oil starvation, and every engine will be different..
So very carefull and accurate measurement of pressure/oil temp/oil viscosity is needed to get a good glimpse of what is happening inside the engine/Integrated Dry Sump and an idea of what the internal clearances are like ( unless its a known recent build with known tolerances) ....high flow/ loose clearances on the crankshaft/rods is good for cooling ,and is easily returned to sump by Gravity Force...high flow/loose clearances in the cams/lifters is not good as it can cause low oil sump levels, and the cooling is not needed...( has to be pumped down to integrated Dry Sump via the scavenge pumps)
All that said, 4 bar @ 4K rpm @ 90C is the factory spec....what was the oil temp on this motor during the measurement? I suspect a good 50 weight oil with higher viscosity will be satisfactory on this engine...
