Suggestion
What I may recommend is if there is a porsche dealer near you just give them a call and tell them you would be interested in purchasing one but before you do the purchase hopefully they have some used 996's in the lot with the sport exhaust system.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Interms of whether or not there's any power gains I don't think you gain any but the sound really makes you think it does as with the Fabspeeds sounds great but after getting it dynod by The Racer's Group I actually lost hp until TRG reconfigured it back to normal with the Unichip.
Has anyone installed the Porsche Sport Exhaust on a 996 and what do you think about the sound and/or performance improvements. I'm aware that Porsche will not make any HP increase claims, however I've been told that the Porsche Driving Experience cars in Atlanta all have the Porsche Sport Exhaust upgrades and they have performed Dyno test on these cars and they see a 20-25 hp increase.
Had it and liked it. Also heard the PDE guys talk about running out of gears at certain places around Road Atlanta with the 01 sport exhaust equipped 996s that they didn't with the 00 non-sport exhaust equipped 996s. Don't know about anyone else, but I didn't "feel" any diff. If there is any, it would be so neglible that you'd have to be very comfy with the car on a certain track - ala PDE instructors at Road Atlanta.

Makes you want to drive harder to hear the growl. I've also been told there is no horsepower increase but possibly improves torque response.
hmmm. I have the factory sports exhaust on my '01 UK 996 Carrera 2 Cab.
Personally, I think it's too much - it sounds like a tweeked exhaust rather than pure power and to some extent makes me sound like I'm 17 in my first car when I put a hole in my exhaust on purpose!
After some research, it would seem that there's no increase in power. It has flaps operated by the speedometer rather than revs. The flaps remain open but between 25mph-45mph they shut and the sound goes.
I did find a guy who posted pictures of a setup on his boxster where a switch turned the exhaust on all the time - apparently the same system can turn it off all the time too - I don't yet have the guts to start playing with the electrics though!
Overall, it's fun - but, I have to say that in the traffic in London at 8:00pm I wish I didn't have it - and the neighbours hate me!!!
I do recommend you actually hear a Porsche Sport Sound exhaust in person since it's basically a audible choice and if that's the choice you make I think it would be a good one since I don't like how the stock exhaust sounds anyway(both the boxster and the 996 sound like vacuum cleaners-dustbuster and hoover respectively). I have a '99 996 and I was at the crossroads between the Porsche Sport exhaust and the Fabspeed and decided on the Fabspeeds-much throatier. Interms of whether or not there's any power gains I don't think you gain any but the sound really makes you think it does as with the Fabspeeds sounds great but after getting it dynod by The Racer's Group I actually lost hp until TRG reconfigured it back to normal with the Unichip. This was all measured hp on the wheels and if you want to know flywheel hp I heard between 15% to 35%-15% by owners and 35% by tuners(wheel hp times .15-.35 plus wheel hp= flywheel hp). I would probably side with the owners on that. Also another thing to think about is if you plan to resell your car there's something about having everything OEM so the Porsche Sport Exhaust would be a wise choice. And also being OEM it costs more as well. I know there was a post way back with a sound bite on the Porsche Sport exhaust so maybe that may help you in deciding. Good Luck. Mike
Anyone in the Sacramento area that has a 996 with Porsche Sport Exhaust. I would really like a ride to hear the sound before I have this option installed on the 20th of this month.

What I may recommend is if there is a porsche dealer near you just give them a call and tell them you would be interested in purchasing one but before you do the purchase hopefully they have some used 996's in the lot with the sport exhaust system. Maybe someone close to you has already one installed like you inquired. Regards. Mike
