Suspected cause
When I took delivery the service now light was on which I believe was due to time and not mileage.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So after a while of searching for a 981B, and debating between a
987.2
,
981
, and a Jaguar F Type, I’ve come across this 2012
987.2
Boxster base
that’s pretty spec’d out.
I have it pre ordered on Carvana and plan to make an appointment at the
Porsche
dealership the day after delivery for PPI.
It’s going for $29k, and has 84k miles. Carfax is kinda spotty. It’s had 5 owners, first 2 owners barely drove it, and was put up as a CPO at 65k miles.
Seems like the most recent owner may have used it for commuting because they put 20k miles on it within 5 or so months. (From the looks of carfax, they bought it in Oct-2020.
Spark plugs
were replaced at 74k miles.
I guess I’m posting here, what is this forum’s thoughts and advice would be appreciated. Definitely will be getting the PPI ASAP though.
Below are the Carvana and Carfax links, along with sticker tag. Also, can anyone explain some of the more uncommon packages? What is the sports design package? Couldn’t really find anything concrete in what it is? Does this spec sheet say that mirrors are black while the rest of the car is red?

Without a PPI, it's difficult to know for sure, but a
987.2
Base has the potential to be the most reliable and long-lived of any 987.X car.
As well as one of the hardest to get your hands on.
I personally think it's worth the effort to throw some PPI money at for sure!

When the car is delivered be very picky and Carvana will take care of any issues without a hassle.
When my car was delivered I was able to get them to pay for a full service, full respray of the front bumper with replacement of all plastics on the bumper, and $100 credit since the car was slightly dirty.
If there is anything wrong with the car that wasn't disclosed on their website they will address.
I was very happy with my experience with them
Did you accept delivery and take it for PPI, and that’s when they accepted to pay for the full service? What did you say for them to paint the bumper? Did the bumper have marks that were disclosed?
The design package seems to be the wheels and black bits, see e.g.
Porsche releases new option package for Boxster, Cayman in Europe
. On Porsche stickers individual elements of a package are also listed, so the “in black” options (and without their own price tag) are part of that package. Should be an eye catching combination, and at that price quite a rare one! I got a PPI on a 987.1 I passed on, and on a 987.2 I bought. Well worth the time and money. The car never fails to put a smile on my face!

I saw that while searching for the sport design package as well. It seems like it was only released in Europe. Well I haven’t seen a US model with that package. I really love the look of the extended duck tail spoiler. If you YouTube “sport edition 987” you’ll see it, but again, these are all euro versions with right hand drive. So I have no clue what this sport design package could be for a stateside version.
When I took delivery the service now light was on which I believe was due to time and not mileage. I have a 2009 with 34k miles.
They allowed me to take it to the shop of my choice and they paid for everything the shop recommended be done ($900+ bill) . I am sure if the shop found more wrong with the car they would have covered it. The warranty they provided also covered the bill when the Bluetooth stopped working and I had to take it to the dealership to have it hooked up to their computer to resync it to the car.
The front bumper was resprayed prior to delivery and there was over spray on the plastics and color was slightly off. I pointed that out at delivery and since it wasn't disclosed on the website they covered it without argument.
The warranty they provided was the best, and they never argued no matter how picky I was.
That’s great to hear and makes me feel better about my possible future purchase. This was the 100 day warranty you’re speaking of correct? Or did you buy the extended?
Yes, it was all covered by their 100 day warranty. There is a $50 deductible if you take the car to a repair facility outside their network. But I just called them and explained that none of their facilities specialize in
Porsche
so they waved the fee each time
Their warranty company is called Silver Rock.
Not yet, just the preorder. But I’m not worried about a few little knicks and scratches, because I plan to wrap it anyway If the engine components are in good condition, following the PPI, I’ll most likely buy it.
I had a similar positive experience with my Carvana
Boxster
. They covered about over $5k of work on the car as well, without issue. I also used a
Porsche
specialist and they never complained or asked for the deductible. I didn't have to do anything and SilverRock covered it all without issue.
I have a detailed thread about my experience at the other popular
Porsche
forum... so I don't want to repeat it here...
You're on the right track - get the PPI when you get it. Note that the biggest issues I had with Carvana was getting the delivery (they delayed it a few times from the original date) and the registration (they didn't do a plate-transfer as I requested, so it took a while to get that all squared away). I still am a fan of the service, and it all worked out great for me, so I can highly recommend it.
Update: so I’m doing some due diligence, and called the previous
Porsche
Service department where it was performed because it just say “serviced” on the carfax.
On 7/19/2021, they replaced the
exhaust
clamps and the inside door panel because there was water coming through.
previously changed the
spark plugs
, and at 65k, brakes flushed and CPO inspection was performed.
The lady at the dealership actually said they were impressed with how well kept the car was because they remember it. This definitely gives me some excitement for it, awaiting pictures from Carvana.
What year f-type, I was looking at them before I got my 13
Boxster
. I believe they have a
ford engine
block in them, for me no thanks..... The
Porsche
is way more reliable and handles so much better.
Don't take this wrong, but that's a hilarious post considering this is a
Porsche
forum. I spit my coffee a little just now and you made my morning!

The PCA website, has a large classified section called "The Mart". (There are also other ad advertisements sections there, that not PCA based nor sanctioned.)
The mart is a good source of cars for sale.
Update: so it’s still in the inspection process after 2 weeks. I called them to ask what’s going on and the rep said it’s still in the reconditioning stage. She said they are waiting for a part, and it should be ready by Sept. 1st… I think I might be moving on from this one.
Sounds like they inspected the car and are correcting any issues so you won't have to deal with it.... Sounds great to me.
Parts shortages and delays are part of the world we live in now. If you took delivery, discovered the issue, and took it to the dealership to have the issue addressed under warranty I suspect there would be a similar delay in the repair. With the car sitting at the dealership
Update: there is no update. But I may pass on this because a 2014 f type that’s spec’d pretty good just became available. Any thoughts on an f type vs a
987.2
Boxster
? I’ve seen most comparisons of the f type to the
981
or
718
.
Update: So I’ve decided I’m going to Stick it out and wait for this one as it’s pretty unique. It’s still undergoing reconditioning and have not had any updates from Carvana in about 3 weeks.
however i Was able to find an actual picture of the car from when it was being sold at the original dealership. Entered the vin, and it shows the dealer website in the bottom of the image, which checks out with the carfax report. See pic below. This is a pretty unique looking
987.2
with the sport design aero package.
Yes, sadly I have and it was incredibly frustrating. Wish I could tell you what it means or how it might be resolved but no one could provide me with a satisfactory explanation that I could share with you now.
After several months and multiple mysterious changes in my reserved vehicle's status, I gave up on the remote car shopping experience. I know it can work and it surely does more often than not. However, over time, the process just didn't sit right with me. Ultimately, I found my car from a private seller and as Shakespeare wrote, all's well that ends well.
I hope things get sorted out for you and that the car is amazing.
One last update: so Carvana finally made it available today. Here’s the link, if anyone wants to grab it haha. It’s a beautiful car.
