I just got the 99 Carrera and replaced the base 17 inchers with Ruf 18 inchers with P-Zero's.

I read a post that the camber cannot be changed on these cars.

Suggestion
With the stock suspension, the only way to corner balance is to change the compensating rings which is not only time consuming but also not as precise as with a coilover setup.

Suggestion
If you don't want to spring for the suggested suspension work, you may also want to try just changing your front tires to 245's instead of 225's, especially since you have more tire than stock at the rear already.

I would add that the real way to aleviate an understeer problem is to add an adjustable suspension to your car, depending of course on what you do and how you use your car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just got the 99 Carrera and replaced the base 17 inchers with Ruf 18 inchers with P-Zero's. The fronts are 225 and rears are 285. Stock suspension. Looking to reduce understeer. I have appt. to have it corner balanced and aligned. I want the alignment rather aggressive. Does anyone have any tips or opinions on the alignment. I read a post that the camber cannot be changed on these cars.
Looking to stay off the guardrail....

Not true. My car has -1 deg ft and I know people with -2 deg (I believe stock is 0). Don't know how much you can get with the stock suspension though (and you can't corner balance the stock suspension). The camber will go a long way toward negating understeer (as will adj sway bars).

Yes, but your car is lowered with a coilover system. With the stock height, you probably can't even get 0.5 degrees negative. I've heard that it is barely possible to get that with the ROW M030 setup.

Because you need a height adjustable suspension to be able to raise and lower each corner as required. With the stock suspension, the only way to corner balance is to change the compensating rings which is not only time consuming but also not as precise as with a coilover setup. I believe on the 996 you have two sizes of rings per corner which limits you quite a bit.
Hi John:
Good advice here on your understeer problem,....
I would add that the real way to aleviate an understeer problem is to add an adjustable suspension to your car, depending of course on what you do and how you use your car.
Installing a coilover strut & shock setup with fully threaded shocks along with a pair of larger adjustable swaybars will:
Permit precise ride height adjustment
Permit corner weight correction
Allow you to set the understeer/oversteer balance to your tastes, skills and preferences.
Its a significant upgrade!

I found the same problem with my car when i went to 285's on the rear with the stock 225 on front.
I also have PZeros. I personally never liked Pirellis, while the rear tires themselves are pretty sticky, my car understeers also. The compound on Pirellis look and feel kind of weird, almost plasticky after they get worn down.
You might want to switch year tires first, from Pirellis to Bridgestone, or the new Michelins - the ones with the centre rib running down the middle of the tire.
