Suggestion · Original poster

To be honest it's not too much of a worry as the new engine doesn't seem to use any oil, just need to keep it on the full block or the one over full and I know I'm in the middle of the dipstick range.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know how to recalibrate the dashboard oil level gauge? Since my new Porsche engine was fitted it reads 3 blocks too high. In the book '996 the essential companion' it says later engines have lower level sensors and advises recalibration. Trouble is, no one, Inc opc, seem to know how to do it. Thanks

POST 2Original post

It isn't possible - that's why they don't know how to do it!! You can recalibrate the fuel level in the instrument cluster - maybe Mr Streather is confusing it with that.

POST 4Original post

I have just had a look at the PIWIS and there is no routine for calibrating the oil level indicator in the Instrument Cluster. Nor can I find any mention in the workshop manuals or technical service bulletins.

POST 5Original post

Seems curiously specific, do you think it is a US spec thing? It is exceptionally late in the development cycle (MY2005) to just randomly move the sensor levels :?: In fact, technically, it is intra MY, which is very rare for Porsche to modify without some good reason.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your feedback. My engine number is now definitely in the later range mentioned, and it definitely reads 3 blocks over all the time. To be honest it's not too much of a worry as the new engine doesn't seem to use any oil, just need to keep it on the full block or the one over full and I know I'm in the middle of the dipstick range. Cheers

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

...spending £10k on a new engine does require a certain lack of IQ.

POST 10Original post

The level sensors and dipstick tubes are the same for all M96 Carrera engines. The dipstick itself was changed in MY2002 from engine number M96.03-662-11796 onwrds. I wonder if you have the wrong dipstick? Old stick - 996.107.014.54 New stick - 996.107.014.55 BTW, What's an "M96/03 S " engine? I don't believe that's a Porsche designation.

POST 11Original post

Ah, my specialist subject I believe. :dancetwist: It designates it's an X51 from the factory (three evolution build variants): M96/01S (No US Market M96/01S due to SAI and additional cam position sensor) M96/02S M96/03S No M96/04S as this build is only for a OBDII/LEV or Euro3 emission compliant markets (with standard Secondary Air Injection).

POST 12Original post

Getting all anoraky, that's interesting. Does the VIL show the S, and do you know if it is stamped on the crankcase?

POST 13Original post

Crankcase only. VIL just states X51 and standard engine number. In fact the block (crankcase) comes from a totally standard batch, the "S" is only stamped once the X51 kit is added on the line. For further anoraky, the factory equipped X50 Turbos are designated "E", including all Turbo S. So: M96/70E The GT2 derivation is: M96/70S (MY01-03), M96/70SL (MY04-05). Again a standard (turbo) block is taken and modified in each case.
