Yesterday for reasons unknown I stopped the top closing for a few seconds. When I resumed I heard a loud clack on the right followed by a minor one. Top closed ok. Top raised ok. No more noises. I stopped the top halfway up and looked for loose or broken stuff, but only found a loose clamp on the right that holds up the edge of the headliner, it reattached fine.
The only difference I could find is the right side of the top would move foward and backward about one and a half inches and the left only a half inch when the top was halfway up.
Had the 09 2 weeks now, been driving it daily with several top up/down cycles daily, FWIW.
Edit
You likely broke one of the PLASTIC ball-Socket ends on the rod that attaches to the tops frame.
Many of us have, especially as that plastic ages.

Well, the top is still working and all I am doing so far is keeping an eye on it when I raise it. I noticed that instead of a smooth motion it is more of a pulsing one (but could have been that way earlier) and it seems to take more force to close the lock. I plan to go in there soon to change the air filter so will look for this broken piece then. Maybe order it just in case, especially if others toss a set into their tool kit...

It can and will go up and down with one side broken (disconnected)
It's really easy to verify if it is a broken linkage ball/Socket. It's visible to the naked eye, if you know where to look.
My only concern with raising and lowering while one side is detached is the load on the ONE gearbox, doing the lifting by itself, is increased substantially. And those gearboxes are notorious for their plastic gears that can break.
At that point the repair is going to be far more than $16

I'd leave the top up until you have the part. The broken end of the rod assembly has been known to move around poking holes in the waterproof membrane that seals the top compartment from the interior. That can result in flooded electronics (think THOUSAND dollar part) and the need to install a new liner (think THOUSAND dollar repair.)
Just don't use it until it's fixed. Simple.
