After reading the threads that popped up when I typed the topic I have a few questions about the LED DRL installation.
I see a nice install on a
Cayman
from 2009 but I have a 2011
Boxster
. Yes it has an led strip under the fog lights but they only come on with the parking lights and aren't really made to be used as a drl.
I have had the fog light assembly off the car to see how to run the wires to either the battery or inside the cabin to a fused "on with the key" wire.
Seems there is no easy way to do that or if there is it isn't apparent to me.
If I buy the Phillips lights from the UK they use a controller that hooks directly to the battery and senses when the battery is being charged and turns on the lights. I'm not sure if I want a strip that has chrome around the strip, I see that in the DIY the OP painted his black so it looks factory.
I see so many types of DRL's for sale, even Advance Auto Parts has them for about $45. Sure beats the $2580.00 I saw in the other DIY .. yikes!
The question is must I take off the front bumper or the headlights out to install drl's on my 987? Or can I feed the wires from where the fog lights are into the inside of the car without taking everything in sight apart to do it?
How to do it if anyone has?
Thanks in advance,
Accomac
Check Ebay motors for LED drl's very inexpensive (mine work great) but yes you'll need to run a lead to the Inside fuse block to create a hot lead to the LEDs that will power on when the key is turned to the on position. The only hot leads in the nose work off the parking lights.. You might be able to run a lead through the firewall by the radio wires cable behind the battery area but its not very easy - good luck.
I have the Phillips DRL's installed on my Gen 1 987. If you lift up the rubber weather stripping inside the frunk along one side of the flange the hood rest on when it's closed and along the front flange where the frunk hood release lever is (they just pop up) you can see where you need to snake the wires. Run a long thin flexible wire down through the hole where the two flanges meet; it will go down to the area near the fog spears where the fog light wires make their way into the frunk area. Once through the same hole, attach the end of the Phillips wire to it firmly with a small piece of duct tape, then pull your snale wire back up the hole and it will bring the Phillips wire back up with it. Repeat on the other side, then along the front frunk hood flange. Run both wires up the side flange, then over to the battery. Connect per instructions and you're done.

have you checked in to see if you can replace the base fog light with the DRL ones for 2011, not sure if there's a wiring change or just programming.
have to check on that as well i have an 09
boxster
with no drl option..
Just for lack of anything to do today I rewired my installed LEDs to a keyed circuit. There is a rubber gromet to the right of the battery on the firewall. Remove the driver side panel under the windshield, you'll see a wire bundle from the fuse block ,the unused gromet is just to the left. I ran a pair of wires through the gromet and down the driver side under the velcro'd plastic down to the area behind the fog lights. Used a switched fuse (easier if you remove the carpet/fuse molding) to wire into. Voila DRLs when you switch on!! Easier than I thought..1 hr total (would be faster if I didn't have to search a bit) . Hope this helps..
Thanks to all who replied to my question about the DRLS'. The link showing the
Cayman
install was very helpful and showed the 5 led one and not the 4 I was going to get. I will check eBay and see what's there as well.
I am trying to sell a house right now so don't have the time to spend. I may even have to sell the car to pay for the new home....<kicking and screaming NO>.
If and when I ever get it done I'll post a photo of it.

I'm looking to do this to my factory led strips on my 09
Boxster
. I found a write-up somewhere...can't find it again to save my life...
In the write-up the author ran wires from the stock LED's to the heated windshield washer nozzles which are powered whenever the ignition is on. Keeps all the wiring under the front bonnet.
As I recall he suggested some sort of inline fuse. Not sure why but it sounded like he was taking the 12 volts from the washer nozzles to the led 12 volt wire WITHOUT cutting anything so as to not throw codes
Not sure if this could create a problem or not with 12 volts coming in from two sources. But then again both sources should be system 12 volt (more like 14.2 usually) so I don't see a problem.
Anyon know the wire color/location to tap into the LED strip ONLY?
You could use a smart relay LED harnesses that use a wire direct from the battery. It sensing voltage above 12 and turns on the LED bars.
I tapped into the heater nozzles under the Frunk, they turn on when the car is started.
I have a 2003 986 and I cannot see anywhere to snake the wire. This is a photo of what it looks like after I removed the rubber weather stripping. Any help would be appreciated.
