POST 1Original post

Hey guys. first of all sorry if this is in the wrong place. Just joined the forum to make this post. I've been shopping for a low-mileage clean 981 /987 Cayman S since I sold my Audi RS3. I've zeroed in on the 987.2 for right now. I understand these are rare, desirable cars, and the market is crap for buying. But I am having a hard time locating cars and the ones I do find that are semi-local seem a bit overpriced. The vehicle I'm looking at is a 2010 Cayman S with 36,xxx miles, 6 speed manual, black on black. Buyer is asking $46,000, KBB puts that value at about $37,000 So 1) is this a normal price and KBB just undervalues the cars? 2) Can anyone recommend any other channels for car shopping, especially these cars that I might not be aware of. All I am using so far is autotempest and Carsandbids. 3) Anybody selling a 987.2 Cayman S?

POST 2Original post

Price depends upon the condition, and what the market will bear. I'm also selling my '12 Cayman S, but it's PDK and more than the prices you're looking at. I think one of the best quotes I've seen on the forums is "... you're not buying the car, you're buying the previous owner(s)..." Absolutely get a PPI performed unless you know the previous owner well, and how he/she drove and maintained the car. If you're not already a member of the PCA, join and then reach out to them to see if someone in the location of the car can go look at it to give your their opinion. The PCA also has a classified section on their website that might. Another forum that lists Porsches for sale is ********. As mentioned earlier, the price may be the bargain of the century if it's in great condition and has been religiously maintained -- or it can be a money pit. Another quote from the forums is "... the most expensive car you will ever own is a cheap Porsche..." I was looking at an out-of-state Cayman that was attractively priced before I bought mine, and had a PPI performed after making an offer. Turns out it needed $14K+ in maintenance and repairs that the previous owner didn't know about. It clearly had not maintained other than oil changes. In any event, good luck; I hope it's the buy of the century and the car of your dreams!

POST 3Original post

p.s. In checking Cargurus, the price appears to be in line with what other Sellers are asking. Most of those postings are from dealers. In checking the PCA website, the asking price is also within the asking prices of similar cars. The MT makes this Cayman highly desirable. The car will eventually be sold at or near the asking price given the current market. If you can't get any information or feedback re its condition and previous maintenance history, recommendation would be to make an offer contingent upon a satisfactory PPI. Would offer to not only pay for the PPI but also that you will share the results with the Seller. There is a very good chance the Seller really doesn't know much about the car.

POST 4Original post

Thank you for the thoughtful replies. Great information.

POST 5Original post

To bring this in perspective, I bought the exact same car (in manu with 43k miles) in March 2020 for 32k. World flipped upside down, and it's I think interesting to notice that there were only around 750 ever produced in manual and people keep wrecking them or will hold them forever - like I will probably mine. KBB would be right if it was march 2020, now... let me just say that it will probably go for that price, or a small few grand less.

POST 6Original post

Yeah I believe it. The world is definitely upside down. I made an offer contingent on a PPI at a PCA or Porsche mechanic and the seller told me the car actually had a PDK . So I am back to square one. Luckily I am not in a hurry. But I think you are correct, most of the people who own these by now know what they have, or they are wrecked. Gonna be tough. Heck of a deal you got btw. Hope you are enjoying it!

POST 7Original post

Right, be persistent though, they do come up, probably around 2 a year in the US (in manual), I am sort of a veteran of the 987 market. "R" is obviously more available but for a reason ($). As long as the car looks quirky from some angles (you quickly learn why it looks like this/ form follows function), it's the perfect car, and I mean it. Something better would maybe be a gated F430, but that's 3-4x more expensive. This car is sort of a luxurious gokart, I am still pretty young and I use it to telekinetically transport myself wherever I need rather not dropping below 4k rpm. Good luck!

POST 8Original post

Another site I can recommend is Carvana... I got my Boxster from them earlier this year. I also was able to take advantage of the pre-upside-down pricing, so I got a great deal. But, beyond that, Carvana also provides a nice 7-day return policy (you don't normally get that long of a test drive from anywhere else)... and their 100-day warranty was awesome. I got about $6k of work done under that warranty, with no issues. And they gave me more for my trade than any local dealer. Net, I ended up about $3k ahead of a similar car in my area, which also had fewer features than mine. I know I sound like an advertisement, but I certainly recommend it. Granted, not everyone has a great experience... but the return policy makes it far less risky (even the others I've seen who didn't get the car they expected were able to return the car without issue... so while it wasn't the right car, it also didn't cost them money... and that's important to keep in mind). The biggest issue with them is that they can be slow to turn around a car (the cars are snapped up the moment they show up on the site, so you gotta be quick)... and the other issue is their registration process doesn't always work out right (I needed a plate transfer, and they mistakenly gave me a new plate... so it took a bit of effort to fix this). Again, overall, I had a great experience.

POST 9Original post

I’ve driven the 987.2 and own a 981 BS. Not much comparison to me in looks or interior quality. The 981 is far better looking IMO, lighter, stiffer and will end up having better resale value- if you care. I dont plan on ever selling mine. I love love love the PDK and I learned to drive in a 912/ 4 speed way back in the day. I’ve owned an ‘85 MR2 and a ‘94 Miata M edition. Owning a BS with the PDK is sorta like owning four cars in one. I can drive it manual or auto with the top up or top down. No way do I consider the marginal performance gain of the Cayman worth cocoon driving in one of those versus glorious top down driving through the mountains. It took me four months to find the spec/condition/mileage car I was looking for. It’s loaded with all the options I wanted and doesn’t have two I didn’t want- pasm and sport exhaust. A low mileage cream puff didn’t fit my budget so I happily settled for a car with some miles -63,000. No regrets as the car looks great rolling down the blvd and runs like new. I’ll eventually get it repainted Jerez black (E92 M3 color) instead of the base black and get the wheels refinished. As it looks now I get tons of compliments. These are incredibly well made cars IMO. It was a stretch for me but worth every single penny. Good luck!

POST 10Original post

Thanks! I would happily consider a 981 as well. I am looking at Boxster S as well as Cayman S. Don't have a preference, really. The prices are just very inflated right now. I'll probably wait, maybe a year, for prices to hopefully correct a little bit and by that time more 981s will be in my price range. I'm coming out of an Audi with a DCT and this will be a weekend car so I'm fairly set on manual. If it were more of a DD I would take the PDK no question.

POST 11Original post

Keep an eye on the ******** Marketplace also. I found mine there. Autotrader would be another place to look as well as the PCA marketplace. I don't think you have to a PCA member to use it. 2010 Porsche Cayman S, Excellent condition! - ******** - Porsche Discussion Forums although it appears this one is sold.

POST 12Original post

Maybe you’re right and the prices are inflated, or maybe the prices are just going up and a year from now it’ll be a few thousand more for the same car. I had been looking at the cayman market for the past year and it’s only gotten more expensive during that time. I finally got lucky and got an autotrader alert for a CPO 2009 987.2 CS PDK with sport chrono and full leather interior (which sort of makes up for the generally crappy interior of the 987 vs 981 gen). I pulled the trigger and paid 49k. A lot of money for a 12 year old car yes, but the car only had 9k miles on it and was CPO, so I have no doubt it will hold its value. I would suggest you set up alerts on several sites and also periodically peruse the listings. You’ll get a good grasp of what the prices are like and you’ll then know how to spot a good deal when one comes up. I would also recommend a higher mileage 981 as a good option in the 40-50k range. Good luck!

POST 13Original post

You could always grab one of the models that are the least affected by the pressure on prices? A 987.1 Base. Fully depreciated and in my opinion a STEAL because of the silver Brembos that say "Porsche" on them. Lol There's still some really well kept medium mileage (which is actually a good thing) Porsches that are still wonderful cars to drive. They AREN'T pretend Porsches afterall. That way you can be enjoying a Porsche while you are keeping your eyes open for The One, however long. And the 2.7 motor, according to most reports, is far less likely to be an uhoh motor. POST 14Original post

$46k for a 987.2 seems high. I bought a very nicely optioned 30k mi white southern kept 981C PDK in March for $41k. (I’d imagine the price for it now would be $44-45k based on supply and demand).

POST 15Original post

From everything I've read the S is a lot more fun than the base. But you do make a good point. Its still a flat 6 manual trans and the chassis. And I could always keep my eyes open to for the one. Very very true....

POST 16Original post

I agree with Schwinn.0, drive them both. There's no doubt 50 extra hp will give you more speed on the straights, just as a new C8 will spank any cayman on the straight. Another thing to consider is that the 3.4 engine is DFI and more prone to bore scoring ( this is true for non Pcars as well) .
